Guys, I bet you're in my shoes back in millions of years ago.

What do you guys do when you have an offer from Uni A needs you to respond while you are awaiting for better offers from other universities [Uni B,C or D].

Note: 1. Assume the deadline for responding offer from uni A cannot be extended.
Note 2. To receive offers from Uni B,C and D is not guaranteed.
*
If your results is above the minimum requirement then nothing to worry about.
International students = cash cows to them.
When did you apply to Uni B,C,D and etcs?
If you're desperate give them a call to expedite your application and play the "I got an offer from uni xx and the deadline offer is approaching soon, but I would like to study in this uni ......"
Call them do not email them, the sooner you get this done the better for you to booked your flight ticket and find your accommodation.
Take note if the uni is in brisbane expect delay, that place is flooded, pretty bad.

QUOTE(zeke'stah @ Jan 12 2011, 10:27 AM)
that's what i thought! but apparently my classes will be at city east tho... o.o

i'll be staying at 140 north terrace, URBANEST. new building set to open its doors on 1st Feb..  seen the place.?  xD

hm... where would you suggest going?  fitness first?  alright. already had my mind on bankSA.  biggrin.gif  hahaha....well i heard she was "underpaid".  i don't intend to work there...  ><
*
My mom told me that if you apply fitness first in malaysia can carry forward your "passport membership" to Australia.
Haven't ask her in detail yet coz for me uni gym is sufficient and also near by school.

Please advise:

I applied for my student visa online on 30 December 2010, and yesterday my status read "health requirements finalised". There are no other documents/information outstanding, after having lodged required docs online on 4 January. Course starts 27th Jan. However, I am already booked to leave Malaysia on 17th, but will only get into Melbourne on 20th (layover 2 nights in Spore). IF my visa is still not out on the 18th, what should I do? Do I apply online for a ETA tourist visa first? If yes, what do I do when I get into Melbourne?

No idea what is holding up the application!? Thanks in advance!
*
Give them (DIAC) a call ASAP and tell them your situation and ask for an ETA when you will get you visa finalized.
If ETA deadline is pass and no news, called them and ask to escalate your case to the manager.
Make sure you have your documents ready by the phone.

My processing centre is WA. I may have to get someone to call from Perth, as there's no number to call from outside Malaysia. Called the medical centre yesterday, and the doctor himself confirmed that all documents have been lodged. Status has reflected this.

Hi, thanks. There is no number to call from outside Malaysia. Should I get my aunt who lives in Melbourne to call on my behalf?
*
As zeka'stah said I think better go and contact Australia embassy and ask.
If you're desperate wake up early and go there in person.

http://www.immi.gov.au/contacts/overseas/m/malaysia/

Personally I be worried if I be you cause you have 5 working days to sort this out.
All the best!

Did you go to the link I gave you?
Call and ask them, pretty sure they will give you a direct contact to Perth DIAC.
Like I said contact them ASAP and see your options from there.
Be persistent, Aussie folks are helpful bunch, just don't be rude/shout over the phone.

Thanks to everyone especially Shooters, december88 and zeke'stah, got my visa!! Would have liked to hook up with everyone but it seems we're all in different parts of Australia! Here's wishing everyone all the very best in your studies and undertakings Down Under. A new chapter for all of us.
*
I am glad you got your visa on time.
Now enjoy your time at home before going abroad.

to be honest u can just walk in and scout urself, security isnt tight at all. In fact if u dress up, and act natural i think they wouldnt even ask u to scan ur membership card laugh.gif and its small enough for u to see around from the entrance itself.
*
True regarding the security, just before exam week a friend of a friend was stabbed multiple times with a knives in the gym in one of the uni's college and was hospitalized for 3 weeks.
He survived and to put cheery on the cake, he didn't have to do his exams and got all HDs in his course because his coursework's marks were near-perfect.
Nonetheless it is a traumatic experience from my point of view, lucky bloke he survived.
Anyway never workout in the gym alone, always practice the buddy system.

That was a college's gym in North Adelaide, not university campus gym.
I forgot to mention he was stabbed because it was a robbery and he resists and he was the only one in the gym.

QUOTE(immabee @ Jan 13 2011, 10:07 PM)
What do you guys think of Brisbane. Wonder how long does it take for the city to recover from such disastrous nature phenomena. Do you think student accommodations are going to get interrupted?
*
It's gonna be a tight rental market in Queensland this year. With massive projects on going especially coal seam gas@ Curtis Island, I think 2 major projects already received FID with another 2 major projects slated to received FID this year ones customers are secured. One project that recently received FID had a AUD 2 billion cushion budgeted into the FID cost due to skill shortages and other factors.
Pretty sure suburbs that are close around CBD will take some time to rebuild.
Anyway my mate who is doing his vac work there told me Brisbane rental is expensive and he's paying around $250 per-week for a 3 bed room in the CBD.
Lucky he didn't bring his Ducati there from Adelaide and lucky he didn't lived in the suburb.

QUOTE(lawl @ Jan 14 2011, 06:29 PM)
Paul, I live near that gym. Damn. I gotta be careful now cuz no more friend living with me cuz he finished his degree already. Sigh.
*
It's a college gym only for college students, not sure what college tho.
Just make sure you have a buddy in the gym especially if you're doing weight training.
Are you still living in uni accommodation or private rental?
Anyway nothing to be afraid off, just know you risk, I usually cycle back home to uni late (9-12 am) due to research commitments, always a pleasure seeing all the drunkies because I have to pass through Rundle Mall/Street cycling back home.

QUOTE(zeke'stah @ Jan 14 2011, 07:10 PM)
wow...ah..he should have just gave them what they wanted... damn this thieves.  is this gym far from the city?

Added on January 14, 2011, 7:11 pm
what year of your study are you into man?
*
This year is my final year.
Gym is in North Adelaide, probably one of the best suburbs and also safe IMO. It is near the city and also heaps of shop, cafes and restaurant and pubs too.

Can anybody who went back home to Malaysia last year or this year confirm that a student ID card was not sufficient for an extra 5 or 10 kg for outbound flight from Australia?
I really need to know this before I contact MAS next week.

*
Uni Adelaide.

QUOTE(BakaInu @ Jan 15 2011, 07:09 PM)
Are you kidding me? 250 per-week for a 3 bed room in the CBD, furnished? Even if it's unfurnished, it's considered really really cheap. The normal market here for furnished 2 bedroom is roughly 400-500 while 3 bedroom is 500-600. If you are renting from people, it depends on the suburb with the ones further from the city like Logan will be a lot cheaper than the hot zones uni students or CBD. The rates go between 100 - 200 single bedroom and 180-250 for master bedroom, unless you want to live luxuriously. Also, regardless of the rental market, there is always a place to rent rooms or units regardless of how it is, just maybe slightly higher pricing. Eg. Student UniLodge, etc.

Oh, and also, Brisbane is recovering from their disaster pretty well. Everybody is doing their part to help out and getting the city into shape again. However, full recovery might take months, possibly years with the zones near the river being the most severely affected while those outside those zones are looking in pretty good shape.
*
He's paying AUD250 for his own room since he is sharing the apartment and it is fully furnished, but total is AUD750 per-week.
That is expensive from his point of view, at least he's earning decent coins to be able to afford that.

I am still in Adelaide now, doing vacation work/internship.

Regarding the extra weight allowance, if you have Grad card then you will get your extra 10 kg.
International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is semi-useless since MAS only accept them for the extra weight allowance during certain period of the year albeit it was a reasonable period from Oct to late Dec.
What a joke. See the facebook link for the T&C.

QUOTE(zeke'stah @ Jan 28 2011, 08:39 PM)
what would one Adelaide recommend for a mobile operator? 3 or vodafone?
*
You're living in the city, Three should be fine money wise.
But seriously 3G so slow during peak hrs.
Outside full bars, go inside building drop 1-2 bars.
Basement confirmed no signal.
But good enough for me, but I am itching going to Telstra for mobile soon.
Voda embroiled in class action suit soon due to crap service.
They expand too fast and thus saturating their network, not to mention lying to customers regarding their network congestion.
http://www.vodafail.com/

QUOTE(haya @ Jan 28 2011, 09:43 PM)
Pricing maybe. The merger has not shown any sharing of infrastructure, partially it is quite hard to merge their business cases and billing systems together. Keep in mind Telstra owns about 40% of Three's 3G network, (part of the reason why Three has a roaming arrangement with Telstra) so its not as simple as flicking the switch.

I would love to get onto Vodafone's network. For all their faults their coverage in Brisbane is better than Three's, largely due to their 2G 900Mhz network.
*
Soon they will have to share network, it's part of the "synergies" when they announced the merger.
I am pretty worried cause usually for voice/sms services it is free of charge to roam via Telstra aka same rate as 3's network when 3's has no signal.
Btw regarding the Three's 3G network it is an equal partnership (50-50). After Voda took over merged with Three, Telstra wanted clarification regarding the 3G joint venture with Three, and end up they close the joint venture after the tussle for control.
Suffice to say, if Three's roaming with Telstra is over, Voda/Three better buck up the coverage for voice and sms services .........

I would like to know, are we allowed to bring sweets eg. jelly beans and skittles to australia? I know I will have to declare them, but is there any chance whereby the officers will not allow it?

lets say the officer does not allow you to bring in the sweets, can we just leave it at the airport for a few days and my dad will just collect from them and bring back to malaysia as he will be travelling with me to australia?
*
Yes so long it is commercially packed or you packed it nicely.
And if you declare it. Sweets is ok in my opinion.
Regarding if you can take it back if they took it, I doubt you can do that, since customs handles heaps of things everyday, it would be a logistical nightmare for storage and tracking especially if it is a busy airport.

QUOTE(podrunner @ Feb 8 2011, 10:02 AM)
Please educate me, why are international students with A levels preferred over Australia's own year 12 qualification? I seriously doubt aussie universities will diss their own education's pre-u exams. it does not quite make rational sense.
It depends if you met the requirements and the quota.
But to be honest most of my mates who did A-Level didn't really struggle in first year since majority of the content we learned in A Level before compare to our ausmat counterpart.
Granted all unis would like more full-fees paying students (international students) regardless of what pre-u you completed but they are limits to that and also it could be A Level students tend to finished their degree instead of dropping out(lost revenue) in my opinion.
Anyway apply early for your places then you have time to settle your uni accommodation and flight tickets, ones you get your COE.
When I applied for engineering the min points requirement for entry was 9 points out of 15 points full where A=5 points,B=4 points,C=3 Points and so on for A-Levels, meaning if you have 3Cs you will get an enrollment letter by the uni, such was the min. requirement then.

QUOTE(squirro @ Feb 10 2011, 08:05 PM)
Thanks to both Haya and KVReninem. Are you both currently in Melbourne? Based on both of your experience, which ISP is more reliable?
*
http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/

In short you loved a lot of data and cheap go to TPG (no guarantee it will be reliable, depends on the area you're located)
If you don't use the phone line, go Naked (if available in your area).
Reliable and good speed go to Telstra or Internode or iinet.
I went with Internode cause it is reliable and also good ping to game server and also free download content on steam and good customer service, but price wise is not the cheapest compare to competitors in terms of price per-GB.
If you're in a RIM, my suggestion go with the cheapest or moved out of the area.
Also depends if the ISP's have their equipments installed in the telecom exchange there, obviously Telstra have the most exchanges.
Something you should consider is the length of the contracts. Anyway there are many things to consider, e.g bundle discount, off-peak and on-peak data, ADSL or ADSL2+ and etcs
Go to the website above and just browse through. Hope you get a fair idea of which ISP to choose, but do not go with DODO as haya mentioned countless time in this topic, it's cheap but seriously not worth your time and effort ones things turn sour.

You mean if you're using TPG and you download from sites like Megaupload or Mediafire, you will get caught?
*
Generally no.
Mostly confined to torrents.
Usually TPG will forward the warning letter to your email from the company who suspected your activities.
I think after 3 letters TPG will d/c you connection.

QUOTE(immabee @ Feb 11 2011, 06:23 PM)
What do you guys think of Virgin Mobile, in terms of services and coverage [Perth]. Has anyone use this particular service so far?
*
Virgin uses Optus's network.
Suggest you used prepaid in the mean time, don't think a lot of ppl used Virgin.
Easy for you to change other provider down the road instead of being tied on a contract unless you go postpaid and BYO phone.

After visiting a number of mailing services (DHL/POs malaysia/Fed EX/UPS)

I concure that the most cost effective way to mail my PC over is Via UPS's

Box 8 package which is about RM490

53x53x53 cm up to 30kg

i can shove my PC/Speakers Keyboard and mayBe a monitor or more in it..

Question: will i get taxed? the declared tottal value should be about MYR 2k

Age of items less then 1 year
*
Customs value under AUD1k will not be taxed, shipping cost is not included under this limit, but if over AUD1k, shipping will be included as a basis of GST calculation.
If UPS ask you to pay duty or GST, request for a receipt of the payment from customs.
Heard a few stories where couriers call and ask for payment but drop the claim after receiver's ask for receipt or proof of payment from customs.
I reckon you be alright so long it is under AUD1k in values and nothing illegal.

Try your uni email.
Call Apple and ask if you can return it.
They have good customer service, don't have to wait long to speak to someone.
BTW did you know all the new science undergrad at Adelaide Uni will received a free ipad this year?
All the best.
