Depends on what you want to buy. iPods are probably the cheapest things you can get over here, in fact you can even find prices cheaper than in US.
Other electronic stuff wise, unless you're earning AUD otherwise after conversion to ringgit it can actually be more expensive. But dollar-to-dollar it's considered as cheap. The exception is digital cameras but I'm probably not the best person to comment on this since I'm not into photography.

There are often crazy dirt-cheap deals around though... Keep an eye on stock clearances/warehouse sales where prices can go way below RRP.

So how's everyone's visa applications coming along? Just did my medical with online clinics today, and lodged additional docs online as well. Hopefully should see something end of the week.

hi, do u guys buy your textbooks in Aus? Or buy them in M'sia and bring em over to Aus? I've been told that the books in Aussie costs a bomb yawn.gif

I wouldn't bring textbooks over to Australia if I were you. They weigh a tonne and you have a weight limit when traveling. Most of universities use textbooks from Australia or the States anyway, so it would also be expensive in Malaysia.

Buy it there, try getting used ones. Amazon.com also has a wide selection of used and new books. Personally, I like bookdepository.co.uk when I have to buy new books.

P.S.
Those who are coming to Canberra to study, we have a very cold winter. So pack appropriately.

My visa got approved pretty quickly upon submitting everything online.. less than 5 days.

I will be studying in one of the unis in the Melbourne CBD for 5 months and the rent is killing me. I would like to ask for those of you who do not stay in residential colleges or share apartment/houses with friends, is there an apartment you could recommend me? I'm looking for a studio or single bedroom around Parkville, North Melbourne, Brunswick, Carlton or North Melbourne. My budget is AUD 260 per week.

I just want a furnished bedroom + bathroom. A kitchen is not necessary (or shared, I don't mind).

Also a question on lease, what are the chances I can get one for less than 6 months?

Those on realestate.au and gumtree tend to quote me a lot more because I'm staying for less than 6 months... sad.gif

I'm trying to avoid Unilodge for abit and only go for it as my last resort because of the location. My university is along Royal Parade and I hope I can at least be within walking distance.

May I know when you submitted your visa application? I submitted on 30 Dec, got email from them on 31st Dec, did medical on 3rd Jan, as well as lodged all required docs. How long did the online health clinic take to lodge their health report? any idea? I'm going to be in UniLodge, but am not in Uni yet.

My visa was granted on 10th December.

I did my medical in advance, around end-November because I wasn't around in December. Once I got my CoE, I submitted the application online (Dec 5th, SUN) and called my clinic up to inform them on Dec 6th, Monday.

I couldn't find accommodations near UWA in UniLodge website. Don't mind asking, are there any websites that provide accommodation services similar to UniLodge near UWA campus, Perth? For current/existing UWA students, mind to share your testimonials about UWA's on-campus accommodation? You may pm me as I have more questions to ask. Thx =D
