Thanks.

Which prepaid plan/which company's service would you recommend? I'm currently on Optus $30 prepaid but it seems to run out pretty quickly.
*
what do you use it for normally?

I'm on vodafone, simply because the credits are more, and I can call back to Malaysia (international calls are included in the plan). I've unlimited sms to local numbers AND INTERNATIONAL numbers. (that's a plus) yup they are upgrading to the 850mhz network but it's not in tassie yet. should be arriving in april next year, well, estimated. Anyhuuu.... down side? CRAP receptions, and super duper SLOW 3G network. I do mean SLOW. I think our 3G is equivalant to optus/telstra's EDGE. (maybe exaggerating a bit but you get my point)

Optus has better reception and deals. if you need coverage, telstra is the best, but optus seems to be catching up. Still, it depends on how you'll use ur phone and plans. I might change to optus after my contract ends. I was an optus prepaid user before. The turbo charge plan seemed nice. =) But I never won anything good from the recharge2win thingy.

if the intention is to gain right to stay and work in oz, and NOT an education, then there would be indeed good professions to get trained in.....

don't laugh....many international students, particularly those from prc, purposely take up nursing because that is one profession that almost guarantees a job.....their problem is getting the ielts band 8 to qualify for a pr visa, as the rules have changed......
*
Band 8 for extra marks or is it a compulsory thing? Cos I think RN are in a special category like doctors. But if Dipl holders, then I think they need a band 8 for sure.

QUOTE(D_s_X @ Dec 10 2011, 01:22 AM)
I've received news that a lawyer took up hairdressing to obtain a PR.
*
I think lawyers are back in the SOL list. Most of my friends takes a DD in law and Accounting, finish up their accounting degree, and use that to apply for PR first. I have no idea how but I had a friend who did that. But that was around 6-7 years ago. things might had changed.

lawyers, as are pharmacists are back.....and they took off optometry.....

it's all about getting enough points to be eligible.....as fresh graduates, you do not have experience, so zero points there....so you need the full 20 points from ielts band 8 to qualify......of course if you have points from other categories (eg experience, family sponsorship, study in low population region etc), you do not need band 8.....
*
as I recall, SOL has an extra 10 points, so goes to RN and doctors. I haven't really looked into the point system for PR eligibility yet.

Hmm, interesting they took off optometry. I think OZ only has like 3-4 unis providing optometry, wouldn't they be in shortage of them? Unless they've been mass importing them from other countries.

hey guys.. got a question here for those studying in UQ.. i have submitted my application form to the UQ representative since August and i havent gotten any news abt my application status so far.. is it normal for them to take this long or something's not right for example im not eligible/too many applicants... im super super worried  sad.gif thx in advance
*
hmm, it shouldn't take that long, not that I can remember. Unless you're applying for med dent. Other faculties should be sending out their offers/COE so long you meet their requirements. Even if they reject you you'll still get a letter. I think you should just call them/ check online the application status (if there is any) or check with your agent if you have one.

I have booked a oneway flight with the price of 1.5k. Issit expensive or cheap? apparently i have checked through but only 20kg baggage allowance but i always heard friends said there will be 40kg baggage allowance? anyone can giv me advice on this?
*
you can get cheaper flight tickets if you bought them during the promotion period =) and you can look into MH GRADS card, that allows another 10kg. your friend might be taking business class so its 30kg+10kg from GRADS. my ticket is around 1k KUL>melb.

Hi. Since you are going to be new in Perth, I would suggest you to rent a place near UWA e.g. suburbs Nedlands/Crawley for the first semester. Once you are fully settled and got familiar with Perth, then you may move out and rent somewhere else during semester 2. Hope that helps. =]

or residential college for that matter. They are a bit pricey, like trinity and currie hall. I lived far far away last time. Didn't bother me. The public transport system in perth is one of the best i've seen so far. cheap too.

Aww...I've to travel to either KL or Penang then. Hopefully it can be done within a day.

Thank you  smile.gif

you'll just need to take an xray, eye sight test, BG test, urine test, and BP test. Then you'll just see the doctor and you're done. Doesnt take long at all =)

so you're thinking of perth when you're sleeping, or when you're shopping or...? blink.gif I don't get the point of your post.

Info is at the 1st page, for those who're new, do read it first. it has LOTS of info.

btw, seeking advice for msian drivers in aussie. Do we really need to get our license translated to drive? =P

All the tests that you have to take are very simple ones. If everything goes well and your lucky that there's not that many people around, you'll finish in within an hour or so.
I am thinking of girls. So?
Ideally yes, we're supposed to bring an English translation with us if I'm not mistaken.
But most people I know that's driving here don't seem to have an English translation of their license and every time the police stops us for random checks there was never any problem.

Just get your license translated by the high commission to be safe. They do it for free for students. Mail a copy to them, there's instructions on what to do on their website.
*
yeah i know, the instructions are on the first page too =P I shall stop being a lazy bum and mail them the stuffs they need =) but still, it's kind of a hassle bring the translated piece around. Why can't msia just make our driving license using english instead? >< anyway thanks! cos most of my friends don't have a translated license too. =P

hey guys...for home internet/broadband, how many gb do you use a month? regardless which state you're in.

i'm confused with which ISP to choose, and how many gb to take. is 20gb too much? i'll be staying really near my university, so i probably can get wifi there as well.

i don't download anything heavy from torrent, just lots of browsing, skype and youtube streaming.
*
that takes up a lot of bandwidth as well. 20gb per person should be way enough for you. i reckon 10 should be enough too. Be reminded that there's off and on peak quotas. so when it says 20gb, it could mean 10+10, or 20 regardless of on and off peak. =) I'm sharing with 7 ppl, i think we're on 200gb. 100+100 to be exact. I'm mostly setting my torrents to the off peak since no one touches that quota. =) so long they dont throttle my speed during on peak, i'm happy.

A 4 minute 360p clip on Youtube would take up around 40MB. Skype with video calling will be around 53MB/hr downstream. If your ISP counts uploads that will chew into your quota.

I'm a relatively moderately heavy user, and downloads + uploads will see me chew through 50GB of data a month. And if you're sharing with other people, they have their own habits which need to be taken into account.

20GB for a start as in individual is not bad a starting point, and usually it isn't too hard upgrading your plan (downgrades are a different kettle of fish)

Re onelove89: which ISP do you use in Tassie?
*
I'm on iinet, one of the best i've used so far though. Used Netspace and it's total crap. *no offence to netspace users out there =P* I've used the unlimited dodo too, it's rather fast depending on how many users, and it has frequent disconnections as well. I think unlimited quotas will slowly a hit in australia, and that's a problem too because it'll affect the speed. like in Malaysia =P

50GB is quite a lot for me =P If I keep it to a bare minimum, I can live off around 2GB a month, but 10gb-20gb is essential for me, I need entertainments like movies, facetime-ing, and light gaming. =)

Would you recommend Dodo (unlimited or otherwise) to someone in Tassie?

Do you bundle your phone also with iiinet?
*
Dodo gets frequent disconnections from time to time. speed varies too, and throttles if say, one is mass downloading using torrent. If you need the unlimited, it's still decent. Friends lived of it for a year despite sharing with few housemates.

Not too sure bout that cos I don't use landlines. =P I think our phone line is from telstra. Weird isn't it. =P Telstra internet doesn't have on off peak if not mistaken. my gf is using it.

yo dude. i did == im asking wat exactly is a generic china power bank cos i dont get it. sorry if im stupid. im just seeking for confirmation from more students as i have a friend that told me hers caught on fire. which i dont know why that happened...
*
not too sure what's that, but just get a msian extension/power board and bring it down to OZ =) I'm using two extensions: msian and oz. so that pretty much covers every single piece of electronic in my room =P Generally those boards approved by SIRIM ain't that bad. I have encountered sparks. if that's the case, don't use that socket, use other sockets. =)
