Hi guys, just got my hands on a 2nd hand xbox 360 about 2 months ago and it's starting to show signs of the dreaded RROD. So obviously I'm wanting to fix it, but I'm a bit confused about which solution to use...
1. The 'Penny' fix - Does this even work? Is it some kind of elaborate hoax? Just wondering because although there seems to be some support for this method, the X-clamp solution ignores what this fix sees as the problem altogether (the 4 'band-aid'-like heat remover things that are replaced by pennies wrapped in electrical tape)
2. The X-clamp fix - The method I will probably be following, just wondering about what kind of washers to use, as the guide here states that nylon/plastic washers are best, but I've also read that they are the worst because they can melt and cause RROD again. So metal or plastic washers?
3. Would combining the above two solutions be a good idea or mess up the x-box?
4. A friend also has an Xbox, in perfect working condition, but he's worrying about RROD now and would like to 'fix' his at the same time I'm doing mine. Can you fix RROD before it happens? i.e: apply an x-clamp fix to a working xbox in order to prevent RROD from ever occurring
edit: oh and it's probably worth mentioning that neither console has a valid warranty, so sending it in for repairs is out of the questions. Who wants to wait weeks for a repair they can do themselves anyway? =P

and I would say none of the available method on the market is RROD proof or can permanently solve 3RROD.
You may fix one which already with 3RRoD, but since it's not a permament fix and the box will fail after some fix attempt, trying to patch up one without it is not a wise move.
The root of all cause lies on the chip itself and all method mentioned is not going solve that.

Ah okay, thanks for clearing that up for me, my understanding was it was simply caused mainly by overheating, which in turn exacerbated other problems with the console, like the badly applied thermal paste and use of cheap parts. Is the chip that's the problem the CPU or GPU? sorry if it's really obvious, kinda using this as a learning experience for electrical innards.
Also even though there's no permanent fix for RROD, which method is most long lasting?
Still looking for an answer for nylon vs metal washers too, although I've done a bit more research now and found that the claims that nylon washers could melt are probably unfounded; as the melting point of nylon starts at 190 degrees celsius, and if my xbox is running that hot I think the washers melting is going to be the least of my problems
And what do you do if you've fixed the RROD, and it occurs again? Throw the Xbox in the bin? I'm assuming applying the same fix again won't do anything.

Mostly on the GPU itself due to of course a relatively poor heat dissipation headroom (Below Disc drive) and also the chip packaging problem as M$ is inexperience in that but later Falcon & Jasper batch appears to solved the heat dissipation problem as the mentioned problem occurs less on said batches. reballing the chip *suppose* to last longer than other fix.

QUOTE(y3ivan @ Jan 26 2010, 10:38 AM) Last how long is another question. Usually dead simply means it's bricked and should be repairable... at least for few times.

alot of lowyaters conception is that 1st RROD = dead.
