trumpet....isshh.memories came flooding back to me...
was in a brass band in form 1-2...trumpeter here...i think i can still remember how to play the indiana jones theme...playing the trumpet and marching under the hot sun isn't very nice.but i learned to read notes while playing(unlike guitar tabs which are dead easy)

1 piece of advice...DON'T SMOKE.buy a cheap plastic mouthpiece to practice with.if ure learning to play the trumpet, dont play it at home, unless ure room is extremely soundproofed.

Just enjoy.
It's kinda hard to tell you what to do with it.
And a plastic mouthpiece does help.
But if you have extra money, would recommend you using the metal one.
What model you buying btw?

Remember to do warm ups and do not over practice as it's gonna make your lips turn purple/bleed/burst.. Once burst, you can't play anymore.
Yeah, practice with mouthpieces, practice the tones with lips tightens..

I remember there's this thing that you fit into the Trumpet's head and you can connect it with a headset and you can play while listening to yourself..

whoah. first time i heard this such things.. ''trumpet is easier than reed instrument'' maybe its up to personal preference i guess. as for me, i'm a clarinetist for 5 years feel that trumpet is way harder than reed instrument as trumpet need to have muscles control, the bright sound, bla bla bla....

guess its personal preference...always wanted to play like kenny g (this was when i was 13-14) but somehow i find it difficult to play any reed instrument...i tired the sax, clarinet, flute, piccolo and snare...then when i came to brass instruments, my mentor told me that i could blow through the mouthpiece like a champion...both trumpet and trombone...then i decided to play the trumpet as its a much smaller instrument then the trombone...and sounds much much nicer

btw, i havent touched the trumpet in over 10+ years.lung capacity not as good as it used to be...

Hi there, it is good to hear that you would love to pick up this instrument.
I started to play trumpet around 10 years old and now i am 31. I have 5
horns (2 B flat trumpet, 1 piccolo trumpet, 1 E flat cornet and 1 flugelhorn),
i am sorry but i am not mean to be cocky here because I am not a pro nor
a orchestral trumpeter. i just an ordinary man but with great passion in music,
in particular, trumpet.

If you want to play trumpet, as for a beginner, i think you should own a trumpet.
If you are rich enough, go to any musical shop, like yamaha or bentley, and get
a trumpet, it will not cost you for no more than rm 1500. New instrument is good,
it will motivate you to learn harder. If you are not very willing to spend that amount
of money, you can either go to get some second hand trumpet or product made in
China, they isn't that bad but tuning wise might be a problem (but that is future
problem when you come to the stage of tunning).

Producing a decent sound (let say "do-re-mi") from a trumpet may take some
time and you might need someone who played trumpet before to show you
the way. But you can try out by urself, just make sure that you close your lips
as flat as possible and buzz the wind, creating a velocity through the small hole
of the upper and lower lips.

You may need a mute to lower the volume of a trumpet. A cheap mute might cost
you rm30 to rm50. The problem when using a mute is that, you will feel that it is
harder to play and also you cannot hear the proper sound of ur blowing, which is
the most important thing. One way to overcome this problem is, you may find a
blow the trumpet into your clothes cupboard. It sound funny but it helps because
clothes will absord the noise.

opps... i think i have written too much here, haha... sorry... if you really interested
in trumpet, we can talk about it more in future, free of charge, no problem!!

ALL THE BEST

Should start a brass thread instead of a trumpet thread...i was a trombone player back to a society's band last time... And for orchestra I only played for KLSO before. Tried the trumpet in my school, the mouth piece is far more smaller than trombone... and I used to play bugle before....I think I still got 1 more left at home if I hadn't threw it away. Bugle looked and palyed like a trumpet but with limited notes and need not to press anything so it means you gotto control embouchure and air well. laugh.gif

Calling all Trumpeteers:

I'm from AniOn Project, a special side-project cover band dedicated to performing J-pop/J-rock from anime OP/ED and insert songs. The band would like to perform some songs which requires trumpet sounds, I'm looking for 1-2 players who can perform together with us as a sessionist as early as October 2011. Band practice is consistent every weekend at Damansara.

Please PM me if interested, thank you.

Hello everyone. Would like to understand better about the usual price for trumpets and flugelhorns in Msia. I was in Bentley music some time ago and it was like 3.5k and above for each of the models on display there. I was severely disheartened about learning the trumpet again as I fondly remember my brass band days (Chet Baker helped greatly in reigniting my passion for trumpets and brass instruments).

So yeah, how much did you guys get your brass instruments for an how good are their qualities? @_@

Trumpet is harder to blow than a trombone, as the mouthpiece is smaller.
But playing-wise, trombone is harder as you need a really good ear to hit the correct notations. My two cents.

Anyway, a reggae band that has both brass and reed instruments is so0 nice...
