77 if I'm not mistaken... it is a HUGE lens.

That's the 50mm f/1.4 prime with the biggest filter thread? 72mm or something...

For me... I would be happy to be able to buy 70-300VR, my expectations are not that high.

if u dont mind the VR, u could consider 80-200 f2.8 nikkor which cost alot cheaper smile.gif

Agreed that it is not easy, been there, done that. The viewfinder was not designed for manual focus so there will be times when you see the image in the viewfinder is sharp but when you take the shot, it looks out of focus. The built in rangefinder is quite ok but if the scene is too contrasty, it won't work well either. So I think you should understand the relief when I bought and started using my 35mm f1.8 AF-S.

I'm currently using this lens & to be honest, at times it is a pain to use especially under dim light. Haha it makes it harder for me especially with eye make-up for dinner and i ended up looking like a panda with my eye make up all over!! Have to manual focus but outdoor not too bad, just need to get the hang of it. Last Sunday went for photo shoot (portrait) with friends & was using my my 50mm on manual mode for the 1st time, kinda tough cause need to take care of setting & to focus at the same time with the object moving or changing pose. I suppose i find it hard to handle it is because i'm still really new in photography.

For me, I would go for the 18-200 unless you decide you need the video and the extra controls and the built in motor of the D90. My Nikon 18-200 has been left on my camera since I bought it a very versatile lens if you understand the limitations. thumbup.gif

Why selling already? Upgrading?

Btw guys, which one do you think is better/more worth it.

Upgrade to D90 with 18-105mm kit lens OR keep my D3000 and buy a Nikkor 18-200mm lens?

I already have 18-55mm & 55-200mm but i hate changing lens  doh.gif

Wide angle distortion is one of the limitations, the other is a "soft" spot somewhere between 100-135mm and I think you are also aware of the "zoom creep" problem. I'm not sure about you but for me I'm willing to accept these limitations as I gain the advantage of VRII stabilisation, a focal range from wide to tele without changing lens and AF-S fast auto focusing. Anyway look around for nice used ones. I bought mine used too.

Ic. I think it would be perfect to own a 18-200. But built-in motor of the D90 means i can buy 50mm f1.4 at half the price and also the HD video is very tempting  drool.gif I'm not in a rush though. Will survey kaw2 first biggrin.gif Btw, what's the limitations of the lens? Can we see the distortion clearly at 18-24?  hmm.gif

I think it sounds ok to me. A 2 lens kit will be useful.

Hi guys,

I'm in Melbourne and was shopping around for duty free dSLR. Got this deal for the D3000;
NIKON D3000 18-55&55-200MMVR TWIN LENS KIT
AUD899 = RM2822
Is it worth it? I'm a beginner FYI, and I don't plan to spend too much on a dSLR. Just a sufficient one will do :-)

Thanks.

From my test I would rate both the lenses at the most on par in focus speed. I don't think the Tamron 17-50 VC is any faster than the 18-105 AF-S Nikkor it is definitely much much faster than the built in motor non-VC version.
QUOTE(celciuz @ Jan 23 2010, 09:59 AM)
I heard the new 17-50 VC is actually faster than the 18-105 AF-S in terms of focusing speed. Someone posted that either in the D90 thread or this thread. Can't recall who was it.
