Nice close mic'd response. Shows that the sub is very even and extends down as spec'd.
One of the benefits of a 2nd sub, as you mentioned, is being able to fill in dips of the 1st sub. |

QUOTE(SyriuS @ Jan 14 2011, 07:08 PM) Hi guys, In general, I would say that having 2 subs (even not the same model) is better than one.I'll be upgrading my 2310 to a 4311 soon, and since it has a Sub-EQ, I was wondering if it would be advisable to pair my old Velodyne CHT-10R subwoofer w/ my current SVS PC12+ ? I was reading a thread on avsforum where they advised to set the Subsonic filter on my lesser sub to 'limit' it as well as lower its output using it just to 'fill in' the gaps. Else I will just leave it with my other 5.1 setup. My setup is just in the living room where I sit nearfield, PC12+ gain is slightly less than 10 oclock or 25%(?) to achieve 75db. Any advice or feedback would be most welcome. Thanks in advance The problem with 2 dissimilar subs is whether they have similar headroom. Your SVS will be more powerful than the CHT-10R and if you listen loud, the SVS might do fine but the CHT-10R might struggle and distort or bottom out (in which case you'll hear it). But within limits will be fine. A second issue is whether the sound characteristic will match. For example one sealed and one ported. If you're used to the tight and clean sound of the sealed sub, adding the ported will muddy that a bit. Anyway, anfieldude has more experience with this and I'll let him share his views on this. My only advice is try it since you're going to have the 4311. I would run the subs as is without setting any subsonic filters and let the XT32 do the setting. If the CHT-10R does run out of steam faster than the SVS, then only you adjust it (but does the CHT-10R have a subsonic filter?). |

Yeah, since logit85 seems unsatisfied with normal commercial subs he should go the above route.

Is that 18" Kaino sub a commercial pro-sub? Usually those are known for very strong mid bass, though with less LFE extension. So your idea of pairing it with SVS is good.

Thanks for finding their website.
Yup those certainly are pro-audio subs. Known for very powerful mid-bass, but doesn't dig deep I see the FR only down to 40Hz. But I can see the benefit of adding them for KICK! QUOTE(DannyOP @ Jan 25 2011, 07:39 PM) One word for the bass... Devastating! Tempted to get a pair of 18 and 15in! Or 15in to pair with svs When you say "devastating" I guess you mean the kick/thump in the chest feeling? How much is it? |

QUOTE(klimal @ Jan 25 2011, 09:47 PM) It's like going for a round with mike tyson !!! Apart from the issue of WAF, it also brings up the discussion of preference vs reference.Yes, it is chest thumping and will bring out your lunch. The 15 ins 400 watts rms is <2K. Problem is to convince HM to have one in the hall. It certainly difficult to blend with decor. For reference, people always say to have a flat FR. However, there is also no doubt that having an extra strong mid bass (like from these PA subs) is FUN and many people might prefer it I just wonder if you run Audyssey whether it will tame down the sub? If it does, then kinda defeats the purpose of it. |

QUOTE(weim76 @ Jan 29 2011, 03:30 PM) The distance of the subwoofer measured by Audyssey after the calibration is correct. However, even with the volume knob of the subwoofer at only 1/4 of the capacity, Audyssey recommends -13db compensation. If I set it to 1/2 of max volume of the subwoofer, Audyssey recommends -15db (which is the minimum which can be set). Is your sub located close to the listening area?If your sub at 1/4 volume results in Audyssey -13dB compensation (normally it's called the 'trim') it means Audyssey has detected that the sub output is very strong. QUOTE(weim76 @ Jan 30 2011, 12:49 AM) Yeah, I have done some further research on this and the general suggestion is to aim for +/- 3dB for any compensation. But if I lower the gain on the sub any further, that would mean a setting of less than 1/4 of the knob, which I suspect might be abnormal in practice. Although the general aim is +/- 3dB for the sub trim, sometimes there are exceptions. I know your concern about the sub volume knob because one of my subs is like that (because I have it near my couch) - volume knob at 9 o'clock results in Audyssey sub trim of -11 dB.If any of you sifus out there have the gain on the subwoofer set at 1/6 or 1/8 of the knob, pls reassure me that it's ok to have the setting so low. Currently I am at 1/4 of the knob for gain on the subwoofer and -13dB compensation suggested by Audyssey (not the minimum limit yet which is -15dB for my Onkyo 608). Would it be fair to say that as long as the maximum subwoofer trim level has not been reached, the subwoofer volume control is fine as it is? You can lower the volume knob of the sub to 1/6 or 1/8 - it won't spoil your sub. But some people are of the opinion that if your sub knob is too low the amp isn't opening up enough. Yes it is fair to say that as long as the maximum subwoofer trim level has not been reached it is ok. Anyway, both approaches are valid - turn down sub knob some more to increase Audyssey trim or keep the knob the same and have the trim at -13 (as long as limit of -15 not reached). The question is which sounds better to u. So you can try both and see which is better. There might be a diff or might not. |

No, I don't think the sensitivity of the main speakers will affect the sub trim.
So is your sub located close to the listening position? |

QUOTE(WereWolf84 @ Feb 5 2011, 04:14 PM) I'm new to subwoofer, does the quantity of ports matter? some subwoofers come with 2 ports while some subwoofers come with 3 ports The number of ports is also related to the output and efficiency of the subwoofer. Basically each manufacturer would have done its own design calculations to see how many ports are needed and what size. In the end you can't judge a sub by the number of ports it has. Some have 1, some have 2, some have 3. |
