Bro, still cracking your head over your room acoustic issue?

I think it is better for you to make time and come over to have a listen first before I ship the Ultra to you. At least, you know the 'benchmark' smile.gif .

The other day, I went to a customer place. His room has really bad acoustic and limited space to place the sub. I told him to rectify it first coz he ain't going to get much of the potential from his system with that kind of square room.

Anyway, I am glad that more and more HT enthusiasts place importance on room acoustic rather than 100% on the gears alone.
*
Yeah, still exploring ways to get the most out of my room acoustics.

One thing I found, putting the sub in the rear position (near my couch) is bad. The freq curve drops off sharply at the low end.

hey guys...
I've been into computer speakers world but have never knew much about HT world...

so I was wondering
-what's the best subwoofer recommended for music(and not movies)
-how cheap can a single active subwoofer costs (for subs not smaller than 8" driver)
-does most subwoofer have that variable low pass filter(like you can tune it to 40hz-160hz)

would appreciate if you guys can answer my question

QUOTE(Beach_Boy @ Sep 5 2010, 01:49 AM)
any recommendations for an active (~RM1k+) sub?
solely for music use(once in a while movies), used in a small room so i'd prefer something tight and dynamic, need not to be loud, it is to compensate my bookshelf which doesnt go low enough

thanks smile.gif
*
Generally for music you would want a sealed sub. However, I'm not aware of any good sealed subs to fit within a tight budget (like <1k). Even something like the SVS SB10-NSD (10" driver) is 2.6k.

So you'd have to look at ported subs, for which the price range is very wide and you can find something to fit your budget.

aww sad... must it be in the thousand range? sad.gif
sealed subs are nice... ported isn't... I've experienced it

at least that question has been answered. thanks a lot

for the last question, what about that?
*
Well, I've not seen any reputable sealed sub in the hundreds range. I suspect a sealed sub involves more design work and higher parts cost, hence fewer low-cost models.

Most subs have an upper cut off (at the top end) using the crossover adjustment. This is to blend in with the main speakers. For the low end, generally there is no filter (only a few subs have it) i.e. the sub will perform until its mechanical/design limit at the bottom end.

Thanks for the info...i am using B&W684 as front, Q acoustic as center & energy satelite as surround...i checky my amp can set up to 250hz...can i set that high? or it will causing causing speaker koyak if set too high?
*
If that is the bass management crossover setting then I don't see any reason to set it at 250Hz. It would mean that freq below 250Hz is diverted from your speakers to your sub. The trouble is can your sub play up to 250Hz? Most subs can't and therefore you will have a gap in the freq response.

In other words your sub might play up to 150Hz, then your speakers play from 250Hz onwards. So there is a gap between 150-250Hz.

So as mentioned earlier, you might want to set it around 80-100Hz depending on the capability of your speakers. Also, there is no issue of causing your speaker to koyak if set too high. Please do some reading about crossovers and freq to understand what it's all about.

I found this statement on SVS support " It is very important to verify that your receiver Sub-Out (LFE) channel is set to the same level as your front right and left channels. "
*
I think what it means is to set them all to be the same loudness. Nothing to do with crossover.

You will need a SPL meter to do this.

There is a dolby encoded test disc that reproduces the frequencies that u need to test to see if there is a problem with ur sub. Its at the AVS forum and is a free download. I will see if I can find the link, else I will pm u and we can see how I can pass u the disc.
*
Not sure, but I think azbro wants a software that can analyze the DD or DTS core within a MKV file.

Yes, if got better cause I'm really not sure which is broken, Sub?, the source itself?...I can't be spending money on another sub when the source is actually the problem.
*
To test the sub, do you have access to test tones or a test sweep? You can then play the tones to see if any funny sounds come from the sub. I think you might be able to download REW and use it just to output to the sub and listen for funny sounds.

To test if it is the source, go to a friend's house, play the same scene and listen if his sub makes that funny noise. Personally I doubt if it is the source. It is possible the source might have a very strong bass level, and if you turn up the volume it might cause the amp to clip or driver to bottom out. But this is not a fault of the source, more like the other equipment cannot handle the source.

Nice pics. That sure is one nice looking sub with the curves and all.

For a moment I thought "oh he bought two?!". Then I realised it was the mirror smile.gif

The Paradigm website says that it's 'accurate down to 9Hz'. I don't know about 9Hz, but it definitely does below 20Hz from what I've heard.
*
Definitely it goes well below 20Hz. And being sealed, it couples nicely with the room gain so the final response should be good down to single digit! You really need something like REW to graph that baby!

Have you check out the new 15" Hsu VTF-15H?
Looks impressive and cheaper than the PB13
*
It sure looks impressive. Still waiting for more user reviews as customers begin to receive it.

Only thing is Hsu's shipping charges are usually quite high. By the time it gets here it will add up!
