Any advise for travelling with bunny? I go back to my hometown this weekend by car, which take 3 hours..I don't know if the rabbit will stress if I bring them along?
*
I have experienced travel with 3 bunnies too.. cyberjaya-penang. we (my bf n i) make sure they feel like home : put them in the cage, provide litterbox, and boxes for them to hide. We wrapped the cage perimeters with towel, except front part of the cage where the aircond can blow to them (not too cold, not too hot). Keep them away from noise as much as can. Give treats before, during and after the journey.. some bunnies love to be pet.. so u can pet them to keep them calm.

Shiro (my si busuk HL), also traveled from kl-penang. The couple who brought him to me also pat him along the journey. Make sure u give them a comfort environment as soon as u reach ur destiny, such as playpen etc. They will settledown themselves as long as u make sure they eat n drink like normal... smile.gif

Hi guys,

Shiro (the bunny u see in my avatar) starts to ignore his hay.

He just recovered from gas problem 2 weeks ago. And since than, he only feeds on vege, fruits and pellet.

A few days ago, i stop the fruits/vege and pellet. Hays only. But this fella sudah terlebih manja. He refused to eat at all! He doesnt touch the hay at all including alfalfa. As the result, the gas problem came back.

This morning, he starts to bounce back as i saw some poops in his litter tray (yesterday, none at all!!) And i have to feed him some pellet.

I've tried a lot of trick to make he eats his hay. Sprinkled with juice on the hay, and even wrapped/tied hays to his pellets!! Do u guys have the same experience and successfully change ur rabbit's eating behavior. If u do, pls share some tips. Thanks.

P/s : I have 13 bunnies. My other 12 rabbits have no problem as they love hays so much.

nicoty_yne,

how u determine your rabbit dont eat hay? i consider not eating if the hay was there for 1 or 2 day. if you just put the hay for few hours/half day, that doesn't consider he not eating. when they hungry, they eat hay no matter what.

you must not soft heart. they wont die if dont eat for few days. make sure got water.  i think u should feed him timothy hay only until he finish it all.

do tell us how long u put that hay for him.

Added on October 13, 2010, 2:13 pmhave u try force hay into their mouth?
i tried before on two bunny and it works.
you hold their body and push hay into their mouth forcefully. as the hay go inside their mouth, they have no choice but to chew and eat.

this trick is not for weak heart ppl.  smile.gif

When i say NOT EATING, means not eating at all loooorr.. The hay is remain at the same amount even i left it on the hay rack for a month! He only munch of veges, fruits n pellets (i'm feeding 3 pellets - BBT, Pro Optimum (as basic pellet) and SRF (as treat/bribe). My rabbit Shiro has a very sensitive stomach. He is having a 'sausage poo' problem (untreatable and getting worse as he gets older, but with a proper diet, he shud be ok)

With this problem, he required 70% of hay in his diet, pro-bio in his pellets (i'm using lacto5) 2-3times a week and a lot of running to make his gut keep working.

So, i've slowly reduced the pellets and fruits and veges, but he still not eating his hay. These few weeks i tried to stop the pellets and i only put hay in his cage. I want to make he eat his hay. I tot, if he starves, he will eats his hay. BUT NO! This fella ended up 'MOGOK LAPAR'. He rather not to eat at all instead of munch of his hay and it leads to gas problem. And yes, compared to other rabbits i have, this one getting skinny due to his eating habit. 12 hours after i stop the pellets, he got lumpy stomach due to gas and blockage. Blockage is not by gas, but by his food/poops. If u think rabbit cant die if not eating for a few days, i think u shud start read about SAUSAGE POO, COW POOP & MEGACOLON in rabbits, then u will understand that not eating for 12 hours might kill THIS BUNNY.

I'm getting sick about FORCE-FEEDING my rabbit, as i have to force feed him with Critical Care, Simethicone, and fresh pineapple juice every time he got blockage. That is not an easy job. As he wont swallow, but will spill out what ever u syringe feed him.

Just now i chopped small slices of apples, and hide it inside the hay ball (i make small balls with hay strands). And again, i failed. If some of u guys have some tips on how to trick ur bunnies eat the hay, do share with me. Thank you.

Nico Dear,

have  you try using Oxbow Critical Care. Shiro remind me Charlyz. Miss her very much? Last time she just stop eating hay, fruit and veges. She only eat pallet. We did try OXbow Critical Care and it work for couple of time. Everytime we give OCC she will be normal and eat hay, but it only for about 10-14days after that it start again. The poo still the same. You know lah the size and the smell. But she active. Jump and binky like happy bunny always do. Even the day we lost her.  cry.gif

I miss her so much.. i miss KOKO oso.

Anyway.. i Got 6 Rabbit with me now. And Sangterap if you wonder what i got.. hehehehe... i got 5 Buck(including Eclipse)  and 1 doe ( this is BlueBerry for sure).

And Eclipse and Bluebery is free running everyday 24/7.  brows.gif  NO CAGE.

Kak Yan,

Yes, I'm really relying on Critical Care. I always prepare a stock with me. But u know la my fussy boy, I syringe fed him, he wont swallow at all. Geram betol!
I contacted Beh a few days ago to get another pack of OCC and BBT, but beh might be busy lately. I'll contact Petshack then. But i really recommend ppl to standby OCC for emergency. Really helpful and recommended.

Now, i really want to alter Shiro's diet. I want him to eat more hays, but as he slowly recovered, he prefer fruits and veges more than pellet or hay. Now i've to start slowly.. reduce the pellet slowly. If i suddenly stop pellet just to make he eats the hay, he may get the gas and bloat tummy again icon_question.gif

Hey, come show us the babies photos laaaa.. nak tgk what come out (i mean the color..) hehehe.. Photogedik cepat!

Only Shiro is free range when we're at home. The rest are in the playpen/cage.

P/s : I always tot Charlyz was a boy. huhu....
Did u get my sms? I hope u dont change ur number. If u change, pls PM/sms the new number ya. I miss u.

u can try bermuda grass

My little fella took an instant liking towards orchard grass so I have started to alternate his hay to give him some variety. Some are of the opinion that orchard grass is more appetizing to rabbits than timothy and alfalfa. Or maybe try oxbow botanical which is a mixture of dif hay making it more alluring. Good luck nico, hope ur boy gets better soon.

Zenix, I've ordered Bermuda Grass from Chubby Pets Garden. The fresh new stock is coming soon rclxms.gif

Eli,
u're feeding Oxbow hays to ur boy, issit? I remembered when Oxbow was just arrived to Malaysia (thanx to Beh & Yo), I purchased 5 types of hay ; Alfalfa, Timothy, Orchard Grass and Oat hay and Botanical Hay. I really love the Oat and Botanical Hay. They smell sooooo yummeh. But too bad, my bunnies didnt like them much. I never tried to feed them on Shiro. If any of the pet shops have the freshly restocked Botanical Hay, i might want to try it on Shiro. Who knows if he will love it.
Did u purchase Oxbow hay recently??

WHAT??????!!!!!!!!!!!! U gila ke apa?? Female rabbits can be agresive sometimes due to their hormone.

If u want a discipline pet, get a dog or a cat whr u can beat them to teach them.

Eli,

Shiro is getting skinnier, which is worrying me so much. I want to feed him as much pellet/alfalfa as he likes, but i'm afraid his stomach wont allow that and i afraid his bloat stomach will comes again. *headache la*

Now i mix alfalfa in his timothy and cut the hays shorter and put in his bowl as he loves hanging his head in his bowl to eat, lazy to go to his hay rack and never touch his stuffed toilet paper roll. I sprinkled some apple juice. But again, he will digs and looking for his pellets at the base of his bowl. Notty!

I wrote to RabbitsOnline and hope i'll get some reply soon. I want to try some oats to help his gain his weight, but i must get a correct ratio and make sure it wont harm/effect his megacolon.

Bad news! I found a lump under his jaw sad.gif
Will put him under antibiotic tomorrow.

I'm not sure if he is having teeth/molar problem that leads him to not-eating. But i realized that he only feeds on soft food like veges and fruits. So now i have to introduce him to high-fiber greenies.

I've called a few vets in Penang Island today to get his molar xray. But too bad the vets here are using injectable ketamyl. The vet who practising isoflurane doesnt has the xray service.

My male bunnies were using injectable ketamyl when i get them neutered.
But i dont dare to try it on Shiro.

I'm thinking about calling Dr L&L (Hillpark) where Hans got his treatment. I saw behind the card, they have xray services. Will call them very soon if his condition is getting better in these few days.

Pls pray for my baby...

If u suspect broken bone, maybe u can try to go to UPM Veterinary Clinic bcoz i believe they have complete/more equipment.

http://www.vet.upm.edu.my/euvh9.html

I've read someone's blog that her rabbits has injured and infected leg. She sent her there. The rabbit get amputated, but survived and success. I read form cats and dogs forum, they'll recommend UPM Vet Clinic if anything related to bone.

Sangterap, do u think Dr L&L (Sb's vet) can help her? They're good with rabbits, rite?

Added on October 22, 2010, 11:02 amRoughly, the xray is about RM80. If the rabbit is comfirm with broken bone, the cost cud be up to 1k. But the best way is to take it to the vet first and get consult about the treatment and cost.

keep us update.

Yes, Cleo.. That is the one. For rabbits, i think is it Dr Lynette. I went there last year to get the injectable antibiotic for my rabbit's abscess. Not sure if they have equipment for fractured bone, but they're highly recommended for rabbits. Maybe u can call them 1st to make an appointment n to make sure Dr Lynette is around.

Added on October 22, 2010, 3:07 pmUpdate about my Shiro :

I called 2 vets today. Clinic PA dn Clinic G. They're most well-known vets around Penang. They have a very good names in treating cats and dogs and they have xray service for rabbits.

Vet #1 (PA) - they have isoflurane but they never use on rabbits. (In Penang, the vets here seldom/rarely seeing rabbits sending to their clinics). They said the xray can be taken without sedate the rabbits bcoz they said they have enough assistant to hold the rabbit.

Does anyone know exactly how they do the xray? I'm very curious. Do they need to make the rabbit pass out before taking xray?

Vet #2 (Clinic G) - long ago, they took rabbits for treatment. But some of the rabbits died under anesthetic (Yes, they're using injectable drug called Ketamyl *or ketamil, i cant remember exact spelling*. They said to take xray, the NEED TO sedate the animal before take xray but they CANT sedate the rabbit. (Bcoz they afraid they might loss the rabbits?)

I'm going to take Shiro to Vet#1. Pls pray for us.

Cleo, Zenix is right... Just find a box and put some cloth inside. With food and water near it so it wont have to move a lot.

Is the rabbit eating, drinking and pooping well? Just clean the butt with damp and dry cloth for now. Just make just the rabbit is eating n drinking and keep it hydrate.

Have u decide which vet to go?
