Hello, i'm new to here. But i have bad news and want to seek opinion.

My rabbit, ok it's not mine, my sis's, the rabbit(Buck) got bitten by my hse stupid dog!!! huhuhuhu and now his hind legs paralyzed. =( He can only crawl with the front 2 legs huhuhuh... so so sad to see this!

So I suspected the back bone fractured. Able to heal that? I have no experience of taking care of pet nor going to vet. I'm so sad to see the rabbit this way. My sis abandoned him going to China for work. So irresponsible. But i'm not good at it. He injured when my dad released him from cage and played around in a gated compound. =( Please kindly advise. The incident happened on Wednesday evening.

Oh no....

That sounds like a broken back. Is he eating and drinking as usual? You can refer to the vets recommended on the first page. Please get him to the vet ASAP. Most probably the vet will try to do something to limit his movements. Try not to aggravate the problem by making him move too much.
*
cry.gif I have no choice now but send to vet. But i wonder vet can help with broken back. (if it is really there broken). I've read somewhere about paralysis, here it said that rabbits may lose their control over bowel and bladder movements. cry.gif

Do you know roughly how much for radiography?
Btw, I plan to go to vets below here this Saturday. I live in Cheras Balakong there though

If u suspect broken bone, maybe u can try to go to UPM Veterinary Clinic bcoz i believe they have complete/more equipment.

http://www.vet.upm.edu.my/euvh9.html

I've read someone's blog that her rabbits has injured and infected leg. She sent her there. The rabbit get amputated, but survived and success. I read form cats and dogs forum, they'll recommend UPM Vet Clinic if anything related to bone.
Sangterap, do u think Dr L&L (Sb's vet) can help her? They're good with rabbits, rite?

Added on October 22, 2010, 11:02 amRoughly, the xray is about RM80. If the rabbit is comfirm with broken bone, the cost cud be up to 1k. But the best way is to take it to the vet first and get consult about the treatment and cost.

keep us update.

Thanks a bunch nicoty_yne!! I think i'll choose the UPM in Serdang coz it's nearer to me.
Actually i can't sure it is bone or not. I read some website it said that could be 2 reasons.

1)
Rabbit paralysis is normally seen in the hind quarters as the result of an injury in the lumbar region of the back. When a rabbit struggles to become free from whatever is holding it (owner or predator), the rabbit kicks out and pulls which can cause damage to the back. When the back sustains a fracture or break, the spinal cord becomes damaged thus leaving the rabbit with paralysis of the hind legs. Many times this type of injury can also cause the rabbit to lose their control over bowel and bladder movements.

2)
While trauma is normally the cause for this disorder, paralysis and hind-limb weakness can also affect a rabbit due to degenerated discs, parasites and bacterial infections. Arthritis and disc deterioration is a common ailment in older rabbits which leave a rabbit with weakness in the hind quarters. Owners may notice that their rabbit is unable to climb or move about as freely as they once were.

But in this case, i think should be the first one. =(

Yeah, any nice vet in bone?

Cleo, Zenix is right... Just find a box and put some cloth inside. With food and water near it so it wont have to move a lot.

Is the rabbit eating, drinking and pooping well? Just clean the butt with damp and dry cloth for now. Just make just the rabbit is eating n drinking and keep it hydrate.

Have u decide which vet to go?
*
The rabbit is not eating pellet. So i fed him some green leaves around my compound, some breads. HE eats , no porb. He drinks too. The cage is too small for him, but he's still inside there not moving at all =(

Pooing, i think he did poo but just stick to body. I guess.....i do not dare to touch him at all cry.gif

But put in box ... maybe i should be bedding for him.

1) Tmr, I plan to go the vet nearby my house balakong here first. It's not famous i do not know how good it is. I just want to get consultation. After that, my 2nd choice would be Subang Jaya SS14 or SS17.

Louis Animal Clinic - ss14
SIM ANIMAL CLINIC - ss14
HEALING ROOMS VETERINARY CLINIC - ss17

At least these places are nearer to me and my bf in usj.

2) Then i also intend to go UPM vet hospital on Monday.

Hi guys,
Yesterday i went to nearest vet, it's in Mahkota Cheras.

Radiology - RM70 per piece
consultation - RM20
medic - RM12

Dr. Hoo attended my rabbit and he's quite honest and straight to the point. He helped rabbit to pee by pressing on bladder. Then i only realized my rabbit cannot pee properly dee. He said legs have response but it seems the spinal chord is hurt. So has to take x-ray. I agreed.

He mentioned that the x-ray showed the section at the middle of the spine was a bit short. He suspected that's the fracture. And he said from his point of view it's 90% correct. I was asked if want to do further scan of x-ray at different angle to double confirm that. I refused.

Apart from the bone, the sad thing was it seems there are neurological problem which cause the lost of bladder and bowel function.

Yesterday and today i fed rabbit medic about neuron related fix. Yesterday rabbit was still eating whatever i gave such as carrot, sawi, etc.

Today, right after the morning medic, he didn' want to eat anything i gave. Very picky. Sometimes eat only the stem of sawi, sometimes not. Others totally not eating. Drink not much. But just now before i came online, he took a lot of water, like 30ml one shot. Haih..rabbit....

So summary of the vet has told me:

1) take further x-ray scan
2) give a shot for him to sleep...permanently as both also suffering at this situation..

cry.gif cry.gif

I dont want! I will go UPM tomorrow and hear what they say.

Actually i plan to do a wheel chair for rabbit if he can pee and poo properly but..... =( now ... sad.gif

I have the feeling that today is the last day he is with me...

Hi All,

So i sent my rabbit to UPM this morning. He's been hospitalized and will keep him for 3 days to monitor the situation.

There are a few doctors, maybe trainee and new hired, in the room checking out the rabbit. So took 2 views of x-ray - Top and side view. These film are very clear than the earlier one taken from the private vet.

She kept focusing at the pelvic area but forgot the spinal chord. So i reminded her and she realized something is not right because it seems fractured. So i agreed to have him warded for 3 days. They will check the blood, urine, faeces, etc. It costs around Rm400 including the 3 days wards, medication, x-rays,etc.

I came home and pray for rabbit. But then i got a call from Dr. Chan in the afternoon. I never meet her earlier and she's now in-charged of my rabbit. Not a good news at all.... She explained to me that the spinal chord is fractured, compressed and it affects the nerve. Which is why the bladder and bowel not working properly. Surgery of course cost thousands so what's my choice now?

My rabbit lost appetite since yesterday. Less faeces and in fact it looks like a rice shape. One drop of urine unless i press the bladder to help release his pain. He also drank very little. Dr. Chan is worried that this is the sign of the bacteria/virus takes place due to urine+poop at the back. So at the end, he would die. It's just the matter of die instantly and peacefully, or suffer the pain...and slowly die later.

I told Dr. Chan to leave it till tomorrow while monitor it today. cry.gif

Guys, need the guts to make the call to pull the trigger... i'm deeply devastated cry.gif

It means this morning could be the last time i saw my rabbit, touched my rabbit....Amen...

Hey guys,

I"m back! I've got good news from Doctor!

So yesterday i made a call to Dr. to check out if rabbit gets better or it was as she expected --> bacteria attacked him and no choice but put to sleep. I was indeed told that rabbit eat and poop normally when he wasn't earlier!

So it means bacteria still not yet happen and what is out of control is the bladder. The nerve for bladder control seems affected by the broken spine. IF the broken secton was 1 section behind, then it would be affecting the bowel already. Means that cannot poop. IF that happened, i had no choice put to give him a shot.

He was good in the ward. Eat pellet and 'shake' hand with the docs and trainee too! smile.gif

I just came back from discharging him from hospital. About 4 type of medicine given to me. Doctor told me he might recover from bone injury automatically because small animals sometimes are just so amazing to heal themselves provided with good care and medication. But it all depends on luck though.

Multivitamin - liquid
Baytril - tablet - antibiotic for the bladder there
Metacam - liquid - try to help the broken section in the spine
Methycobal - tablet - help the nerve

Doctor told me so many things like the nerve and bone rebuilding things. I understand but i can't describe here. blush.gif

So now i have to take care of my disabled rabbit, fed medicine every day before and after work. Something i have to commit if i want him to be alive and be happy.

The cost is reasonable. Earlier i was quoted around Rm400 for 3 days. But i discharged him in 2 days. Here's the break down of the fees:

Consultation - RM30
Radiology - RM50
Hospital boarding - RM12 x 2 = RM24
Half body dip (i think should be dip) - RM40
Drugs Injections - RM15.54
Drugs - RM71.98
Lab fee for urine - RM10

Total RM241.52. I was given 15% discount some more.

I'm relieved now despite rabbit is disabled. As long as he's alive and healthy, i can give whatever it takes! biggrin.gif

Thanks everyone for listening and giving much support and advice. You guys rocks!!

tongue.gif Hensum little boy~ Hehe thanks for the compliment la. I"m not a good pet owner. I never really took care of him earlier. Just let my father to jaga only until recently he got accident. I felt so bad.

Hey im' headache now cos he keeps eating newspaper!! Why??? I gave him pellet and he pushed my hand away doh.gif

Oh yeah btw, he just pooped like 10 mins ago. Lucky is normal poo. I will help him pee by pressing the bladder later after i finish with my report. Tomorrow meeting nik. Tension. Later also need to feed him medics... I really hope there is miracle that his bone will heal and the nerve will recover... pray, though chance is slim.

hi cleoleeps,

happy for you. i notice your cage setting got newspaper below it.
hmm, not recommend. ppl dont put newspaper but mostly bathroom mat. cant commend much until you show us your rabbit cage.

by the way, are you working or student? if student, still can afford to take care of him 24x7...keke...

to all,
since i introduce mirror to my rabbit ytd, she is so obedient and never grunt. tonight no matter how i attack her or even chase her with broom, she is gentle and obedient. im not used to it. i expect some drama whenever i play with her. im bit sot. if she don't fight, i don't feel normal. and lastly, since ytd n today, she keep wink at me.. i said to myself... "hei this suppose to be man trick on wooing girls"....anyway, it is nice to see my rabbit behave normal..since Mocha my colleague male Holland Lop left her, everyday she grunt..she must be lonely...
*
Thanks friend. Btw, i'm working so can't 24x7. Yesterday midnight until this morning, he never eats again!! Why ahhhhhhh I put food in front of the mouth, he turned away. Water also drink a bit. It seems he's more happier in hospital where he ate over there??? Is it because there are more ppl there take care of him from time to time while i can't do so?

Btw, the holland lop is cute!!! My bf wanna get one. How much is that ?

Why you have so many different rabbits~ This one is cute also, can't even see the eyes! lol

Btw, can you guys share with me where you place your rabbit? Cage ke, or open space, etc.

I'm using basket now for my disabled rabbit so easier for me to take him up. I'll get a bathroom mat for him since newspaper is not recommended.

So i'm going to get something for my poor disabled rabbit

- build wheelchair --> gonna be like this already

- toy (so he wont be boring in the basket)
