Hello everyone. I'm new here but I've been into rearing and breeding mantids since a young boy. I'm wondering if there are any other mantis lovers here. Malaysia is abundant with exotic species of mantids and the species there rank as my favourites.

I'm currently keeping these mantids:
Stenotoxodera porioni, Toxodera beieri, Hymenopus coronatus, Theopropus elegans, Deroplatys desiccata, Deroplatys lobata, Phyllocrania paradoxa, Hierodula cf. tenuis, Tenodera sinensis, Acromantis sp., Statilia sp.

I've previously kept:
Toxodera fimbriata, Pseudocreobotra Wahlbergii, Odontomantis planiceps, Blepharopsis mendica, Ceratomantis saussurii, Tropidomantis tenera, Euchomenella sp.

Currently attempting to breed:
Hymenopus coronatus, Theopropus elegans, Deroplatys desiccata, Deroplatys lobata, Phyllocrania paradoxa, Hierodula cf. tenuis.

How many of you here have experience in rearing and breeding mantids?

I've never been hurt by a mantis before. They'd probably try and defend themselves if handled aggressively though. They'd rather try and run away from you rather than attack.

Nice. Here's an old pic of a D. dessicata I used to keep.

I've had the chance of keeping D. lobata, Hierodula sp. and H.coronatus before too. Coronatus spurred a craze and sleepless nights for some time. Almost went on to buying P.wahlbergii and I.diabolica but ended up quitting mantises totally. The way they kill interests me, but that's as far as it goes. Lol. Question, what kind of feeders do you keep for your bugs? How much work is it? Haha.

Many thanks. The mantids I'm currently keeping are native to Malaysia with the exception of P. paradoxa and T. sinensis (acquired from US).

That's a beautiful D. desiccata male bro. Even though there are many exotic mantids from all over the world, I think Malaysian species are the most fantastic. Most famous examples would be the H. coronatus and all Deroplatys species. I've had a fascination for them since a small boy. I used to keep jumping spiders when young, one day my dad brought home a tank filled with leaves and twigs and he told me to put one of my spiders inside. I did that and one of the twigs caught and ate my spider. Found out later that it was a Euchomenella sp mantis. Immediately I fell in love with mantids. Although I never ever feed my mantids spiders after that because I love spiders.

For feeders, I'm culturing fruitflies (D. melanogaster & D. hydei), have a big tupperware full of crickets, mealworms and going to start culturing Blue Bottles, Houseflies and B. lateralis soon. The mantids are not really high maintenance. I just feed them once a day or every two days. For nymphs I just give them fruitflies and for the adults crickets, mealworms and wild-caught butterflies when I have the time.

Here's a photo of my setup:

Thanks for the interest all. I've mated my H. coronatus, T. elegans and D. lobata. T. elegans have already laid several oothecae, just waiting for the rest to lay and the nymphs to hatch out into 2nd generation.

Anything just PM. Thanks!

this is what i use to have...sadly not anymore. They do make real great pets and nothing much to maintain beside needing a slightly cold temperature and a little more moist.

Glad to see quite a couple of mantis lovers here! That's a nice photo of a very pink Hymenopus coronatus ReBeLLioN! Orchid mantids are very very beautiful and I never get tired of looking at them! Although they're not that difficult to rear, breeding them can be a bit difficult.

Here's a photo of my H. coronatus adults. Male is on the female's back.

Nice job bro. Have you had by any chance get your hands on any ant mantis? PM me if you have any extra. And I'll also like to know if you have a spare starter colony for D.melanogaster.

Thanks.

Sounds like Odontomantis planiceps (ant mantis). They're literally everywhere because they're aggressive and very hardy. Here's a Taiwanese link for some ant mantis photos. Scroll down to see the nymphs, do they look like the ones you saw?

If they are indeed ant mantis, catch a few and culture them bro. They're very easy to rear and breed. No issues at all. And the mated females will lay a lot of oothecae in her lifetime.

Awesome bro. If you go to some heavy shrubs or bushes or any low plant during this rainy season, you will definitely find some. If you spot one nymph, there will be many more for sure. Good thing about this mantis is that they will usually sit on top of leaves and not underneath. Good times to see them on top of leaves is around 4-7 pm.

Yeah, that should be Odontomantis planiceps. They're just awesome. Adult females will only grow to up to about 2-2.5 cm. Here's an awesome video to show you how aggressive they are even though they're small.

That's a threat display photo of Theopropus elegans. About the female eating the male, it's not entirely true. It's species-dependant. I'll normally remove my males after they disconnect though. Some of them will run away themselves. They never face the female head-on.

This doesn't happen all the time. The female will eat the male or anything else it can overcome if it's too hungry. Which is why it's normal practice for breeders to overfeed the female before attempting to mate them just so she will ignore the male.

Hey yeah I'm still here lol. What instar is your D. lobata? What are you feeding it? If the size of its prey is not that big, then it's probably nearing a molt.

I haven't come up with any caresheets yet but anyone needing assistance can just PM me.

I feed crickets to almost all my mantids all of the time. There's an opinion going around about crickets causing mantids to become sick and eventually die. Many people have found this to be untrue. Just to be safe, never feed your mantids crickets just purchased from the shop. Always gut-load them first. I gut-load and take care of my crickets and make sure they're healthy before I feed them to my mantids. You can gut-load the crickets with bok choy, cat food, dog food, etc. If the enclosure your crickets are kept in is not well-kept, chances are you'll have unhealthy and stressed crickets.

Try putting in a cricket that's just a couple sizes smaller than your D. lobata and watch it become 'alive'. Mantids become extremely active and aggressive when faced with a insects that they're specialized to prey on. D. lobata can usually be found in shrubs, bushes and even on the forest floor. In the wild, they'd most probably prey on a lot of forest floor-dwelling insects such as crickets. Give it a try but make sure you gut-load the cricket first. It's good practice to always gut-load your feeder insects to maintain their health.

hi all, I been so busy with stuff that i totally miss this place.

Congrats to mantismania for the new thread. FINALLY someone who is very passionate about these wonderful creatures. Nice to meet you.

Some reposting on MTS forum

My current Favourite

Malaysian Dead Leaf Mantis
Deroplatys lobata
Pride of Mantis keepers in Malaysia (aside from the orchid mantis)
Envy of the world.

Hard to spot out in the rainforest, Malaysian Dead Leaf Mantids hold true to their name.
The entire body looks like a zombie leaf walking.
But hid under the shady brown colour lies a wonderful blend of purple, black, amber and red. That's when your mantis gets ready to fly off. Though they seldom do.

They are ambushers, not hunters and can wait patiently for their prey for days, provided they are give water everyday.
While they are quite docile and non-venomous but they do scratch you if you keep pestering them. Their threat display rivals that of a tarantula

With their hood-like appearance, they look like fallen Jedi ready to use their lightsabers, but evil they are not. That title goes to another mantis.

Range Malaysian rainforests.
Type Arboreal.
Full Grown Size Females get up to 5.5 inches. .
Temperament Docile and calm. Loves to climb and cling onto your arm.
Speed Slow
Additional comments: LIKES observing. HIGHLY curious. If you are not looking, don't worry. It's looking at you.

hi all, I been so busy with stuff that i totally miss this place.

Good description. Did the female die a few days or weeks after you took the photo? She looks stressed with the wings like that.

Anyway, we recently mated our Deroplatys truncata. Here are some photos:

Look at the photos with her wings half opened. They'd usually do that if they're stressed/too hot.

Hey Harry, there are still many undiscovered species out there but right now what I can think of is Deroplatys sp.. They're both arboreal and terrestrial and they're quite big. Keeping mantids is easy. Basic care is just feed them, mist them once in a while and if they're nymphs, give them space to molt.

but then i dunno how to catch one and where to catch one. and last time i just used to see those green colour mantis, which come to your house everytime after raining. but then now hardly to see one.

Yeah Ryo is correct. There's another one in culture in Europe, it's the Deroplatys trigonodera. This comes from Malaysia too. Malaysia is mantis heaven I tell ya!

How or where did you get the Toxodera beieri nymph??
I´m from Mexico, and I´m new with mantis, I have 5 Phyllocrania Paradoxas, and trying to get some others, but I found a photo of th Toxodera beieri and I think this specie is so beautiful, so I really would like to get it.

Hey Arturo. Sorry for my late reply as I'm more active on other mantis forums. We found the T. beieri nymph at Tapah Hills, the same location where we found all our other Malaysian species. This is a very rare species which is not in culture at the moment. Previous breeders have only managed to keep T. beieri or any other Toxodera sp. only for a week. We've successfully kept our nymphs for 2-3 months. We'd love to culture them in the future.

Haha, we're not really sure. Most of the time, it just happens randomly.

I'm not sure if this is allowed, but I've just created a mantis forum aimed towards Asian breeders. Anyone interested PM me for the link!

December to April is the best period. Better get your gear ready now. Please join here if you'd like to discuss mantids. It's still new but we already have some reputable breeders from other forums on board.

Insects can never go extinct due to them being collected from the wild because there's just too many of them. What makes them go extinct is clearly deforestation. This is a sad thing. Malaysia is home to many exotic insects. It's devastating to know that sooner or later they'll all go extinct.

Hi guys.

yesterday night i visited mantis land and i tot i share some pictures i took ( with permission from owner of cos lol.).It was a eye opener for me and it is the first time i actually saw the engagement of mantis mating.
Learn alot from the two nice friendly gentlemen and even recieved an orchid mantis and two violin mantis from them. Once again i have thank them for the kind hospitality and time taken to teach me more on mantis keeping.

For some reasons , i have decided not to disclose the ID of them but all the mantis i snap to my hp are from them and i own none of them. i am sorry for blur pics.

IMO, Rearing and breeding of inverts takes lots of time and passion in it. low death rate, high hatch rate of ooth many a time size down to breeder's experience and will to commit in the daily maintaince of the enclosure like humility , temptuare control etc . Which too apply from the babies to the adults alike.

therfore i would like to take this chance to comment them for their excellent breeding method and setup they have and the amount of effort they took in rearing and breeding them from mantis it self to the feeders culture.

Well enough said, time for pictures .

Deadly strike of the mantis.
Now, I see how the ancient chinese adopted and adapted the moves in martial arts, Mantis Style Kung Fu.

First strike is a miss.
Then grab and throw.
Last strike is a hit, locked down, immobilised the struggling prey and go for the kill.

Real COool !!!

This one is a little bouncy. Watch the shadow !

Bro actual fact they can.... but not all can do that (co-existence) with others either same species or not. for example P Paradoxa (ghost mantis) can live together as long as there are enough feeders flex.gif .

But most will eat each other especially the female...they are brutal ya know wub.gif .

So before they(insects), or particularly mantis go extinct it is our responsibility to educate the general public, about preserving them for future generations. Mantis breeders and keepers alike have played important role in making them able co-exist in homes of humans, in the form of terrariums.

Some says..It is ok with Dead Leaf Mantis a.k.a D Lobata, truncata, desicata to be together in one enclosure as long as space and feeders are available thumbup.gif but not for flower mantis (Hymenopus Coronatus) as they will start eating each other usually after it's L3 (3rd instar).

But both species should be individually kept for viewing pleasure unless introduce them for breeding purposes and it should be monitored if not u can find the male head cry.gif next morning .LOL.

Surf the net...there's a lot caresheet for each individual mantis.. tongue.gif .prefer more towards insectore.com icon_rolleyes.gif

Because if it's aggressive hunting and killing ability, even can kill a prey larger than its own size.
I wonder can a mantis be handled like the way we normally do in handling a leopard gecko?

But how big they go or aggressive they can be it just for food...lol

almost the same, my leo wont mind me holding them until they become boring and so as this guys. The behaviour is they like to dance on ur hand swaying..actual facts it is their natural instinct judging its defensive posture but afetr awhile they relax and just hanging on. thumbup.gif ...

It is the looks most of mantis keeper admired at & same goes to leos

Substrate m using paper towel as easy for cleaning purposes. They need mist sprayed alternate days or daily for those L1-L2 nymph.

I think our weather has got enough humidity but they in o/seas r using substrate like peatmoss etc

Yeah they're fast. Adults could reach approx. 3-4 cm. Actually, there's no need to use any substrate bro. Just good ventilation is needed if misting frequently. Leptomantella are easy to care for. I've kept some when I was a small boy.

Reason for me to use substrate is because i don't want to open the container and mist it frequently cause it run really fast, scare it run out
Coco fiber hold moisture as good as tissue but using tissue will have mold easily so in the end i choose coco fiber laugh.gif
3-4cm is consider as big for me if compare to my small scorrp tongue.gif

Actually in S.E. Asia, we only mist their enclosure so that they'll drink from the water droplets. We don't need to mist for humidity as we're already living in a humid region luckily. The reason why I use kitchen towels is not really for holding moisture but to make it easier to clean their droppings and food remains (throw and replace with a new one when it gets too dirty). All that's necessary really is proper ventilation. Too much moisture can result in a sick mantis due to bacteria buildup from droppings and food remains mixed with collected moisture.

Guys here are some photos on how I transfer wild fruitflies and phorid flies from their culture container to a mantis enclosure. Before I first cultured them, I lured and trapped them using some medium I made. You can also use bananas and other fruits to do this. Just put the medium in a container and close that container with a lid that has one hole about 1 cm or less in diameter. Leave that somewhere and you'll eventually end up with wild fruitflies.

Once you see a good number, close the hole on the lid with a sponge and leave the container alone. You'll soon see maggots which will pupate pretty fast and you'll have thousands of flies within a week or so. Keep this going with new cultures. I use medium made from bee pollen, crushed oatmeal, etc.

This is a photo of a wild fruitfly culture container. Note the two sponges (one on top, another on the side) used to cover holes I made. The small hole on the side is used only once, i.e. when I transfer some fruitflies from one culture to a freshly started one. The large hole on top is used to transfer the fruitflies to mantis enclosures.
user posted image

This is what I use to transfer wild fruitflies. It's just a small aquarium tube attached to a small funnel.
user posted image

I make a hole using a one-hole punch on each of the container I have which are used for keeping nymphs or small mantids. When I'm not transferring flies, this hole will be covered with a small sponge.
user posted image
user posted image

When transferring flies, I just place the funnel on the lid and just push the sponge a bit. I don't take out the whole sponge because if I do, it'll be very difficult to put it back without having escapees. Also, this helps control the number of flies transferred. If you take out the whole sponge, too many flies will swarm into the funnel.

Hopefully this will help you guys out with small feeders.

Yeah that'll work if you have just a handful of mantids to feed. I've got nearly 200 mantids and I can't keep going back to the fridge to freeze them lol.

For adult males, you need to wait for about 1-2 weeks after their last molt to pair them up. For adult females, around 3-4 weeks after their last molt. Main problem faced is that the males will not be interested to mate at all. Sometimes they don't even notice the female. You need to get the female to move around a lot in front of the male and make sure there are no other distractions such as a lot of movement surrounding them.

If the male notices the female and makes an attempt to go towards her, then half the battle is won. Next is to wait for him to mount and eventually connect. Even when they're already on the female, it will take some time for him to connect. This will usually take hours.

That's fantastic Ryo. I'm sure you'll do fine. Perhaps you should try and pair some common species first to sort of have a feel on how to pair mantids up.

It could be a P Statilia, looking at its head. and it still a nymph. I MM can figure it out.

BTW MMania whats are the difference of this sp and statilia maculata (asian grass mantis)?

It doesn't look like Statilia sp.. It looks more like a Deroplatys sp. nymph. Can you get a better photo Ryo?

Only two known Statilia species exists in Peninsular Malaysia, that's the Statilia maculata and Statilia nemoralis. One can easily tell a Statilia from the unique markings on the inner femur of its forelegs.

I made another one because there is some gap in between and they can escape through there

Done without the net because i fail to see how it can help to trap them since they ady cant get out from the inverted funnel hmm.gif

The ootheca might b infertile.
But i took the pix right after she's done.
Now after 1 week+ it looks like brown colour.
Btw how do u tell the fertility of the egg?

Im not sure if my way of judging is right or not but its from my experience keeping a adult female mantis tat keep laying infertile egg
Anw i judge from the shape of the ootheca, a good fertile ant mantis ootheca should looks like this (the one below)

I usually found them on plants, under leaf usually...
Need very sharp eyes to spot them to be honest, they are really very small and can camouflage very well

New born mantis are refer to 1instar or sometime L1, and the number increase with every molt so 2nd instar mean it molted once

Nice...

Hi, i'm a praying mantis fan too.
I have been having praying mantis as a pet since small boy, but never breed any b4.
Normally i kept them until they grow their wings, then i'll release them.

In my house garden very often can see green mantis, until 1 day i found solid black mantis in Johor, i brought back home at put at my garden, after months, i saw eggs hatching full of baby mantis... some solid green, some solid black, some black & green mix, some green legs, some black legs... wonderful hybrid.

Recently, 1yr+ ago, i found my garden orkid got new mantis, their back are shorter & rounded. Some green, some black, some olive green, some mix colors... Here i share some of their pics:

Anyone still active here ?
I used to have a lot of ant mantis in my garden and a few green ones (big) ..
I was wondering why the mantis in my garden is now so less that i cant find anymore
Just yesterday i found an adult ant mantis and wanted to catch it and get back into keeping mantis as pets . But he flew away sad.gif

QUOTE(mantismania @ Dec 22 2009, 02:46 AM)
