Has anyone tried this product?

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-86-49-en-70-2tw6.html

Here is a video demonstration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJj1E0FWXMc

It allows you to plug your PS3 directly into an LCD screen on what otherwise might have been impossible.

I have a 20" Apple LCD screen and it would be nice to know if this was compatible with it so I don't have to buy a new tv when I go back abroad. The problem is 20" isn't very native for 1080p (default resolution is 1680x1050) so will the image be stretched out?

Theres also the XCM 1080p VGA Box and some say this is better for the PS3 http://www.xcm.cc/xcm_1080p_vga_box.htm
Do any of you have any experience with this vga box?

I just realized they also sell this product which might be a better fit:

XCM HDMI/DVI Crossover Selector

I heard straight up HDMI-VGA adapters don't all exactly work, perhaps with the exception of the HD Fury, which is why you need these boxes. If that was the case there wouldn't be a market place for them.

Anyway, thanks for the link; reading up on the VGA BOX 2198P now which retails for considerably less.

I have an Apple 20" LCD that has a DVI input but it is not HDCP capable. The Apple LCD has a native resolution of 1680x1050 (16:10); from what I have read, I will need a scaler if I want to display my PS3 in its native resolution.

The only box I know of that can scale to 1680x1050 is the HD Box Pro -- http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=20122 ; and possibly the HD Mate but that retails for over > 200 USD.

I have also read that people have had no problems running blu-ray discs off the HD Box Pro.

However, the HD Box Pro has a VGA output -- would a VGA -> DVI adapter suffice?

I would appreciate your thoughts.

A HDMI->DVI cable is all you need. PS3s do have HDMI output, but it depends on the HDMI->DVI cable you have. Make sure it's indeed HDMI->DVI, not the other way round. I actually bought a HDMI->DVI cable and it doesn't let me output my AverTV Hybrid STB's DVI output to my TV's HDMI input. Currently the TV is connected to the STB using VGA cable. Lucky it didn't work also, never thought I'd be getting a PS3 tongue.gif

Hi RAMChYLD, how about the scaling issue I might be having? As I've mentioned above, my LCD is 20" in size and has a 16:10 ratio; anything not displayed in 1680x1080 will not be in its native resolution and will not be as sharp, so to speak.

The other thing is, the LCD is not HDCP compliant -- but this doesn't matter so much as I've heard most blu-ray movies do not enable this copyright protection? This is why you can still watch movies over component.

720p is not my screens native resolution so it will not appear sharp. Hence, the need for a scaler.

why not go for a 21.5" LCD monitor, with either DVI or HDMI, and directly hook it to the PS3

with RM450 you can buy a decent 16:9 LCD monitor, another RM40 or less for a HDMI->DVI cable.

best of all, get an LCD TV

re u using the Ultrasharp series?

for my current E228WFP, it can't display beyond its native reso

anyway, distortion will still occur, the question is whether u can notice it easily or not, easiest way is to observe the supposely a perfect rounded object, u ll notice it become slightly elliptical when usign 16:10 monitor

this is bad thing of PS3, it doesnt have built-in scaler like xbox 360

Yes, that might be the best route; and the cash might be better spent saving up for a TV.

Added on December 22, 2009, 6:07 pmI got this reply back from HD Box Pro:

Dear,

HD BOX PRO output is VGA, no HDCP problem.

HD BOX PRO support 1680 x 1050

if the LCD support VGA input, it support HD BOX PRO

VGA to DVI adapter OK or not is base on LCD support or not, You can ask Apple hotline about your monitor support VGA signal input or not.

Martin
HD BOX PRO

A solution, hopefully this one will be cheaper then HD Gen. Anyone tried it out?

Belkin apparently is also coming out with a scaler:

And some guy bought another scaler and posted up pics:
