You sure your Wii show pure red light after the change? I didn't have such a thing happen to mine, and now the console is cooler when in standby. Currently my Wii has been on standby for 1 hour and 30 minutes. So far underneath still cool. Before this, 1 hour 30 minutes underneath already quite warm. I made the change because now my PS3, Wii and TV all share one stepdown trans. So if PS3 is on, Wii standby, and if Wii is on, PS3 standby. Wii is using Firmware 4.2U.
For what it's worth tho, I do unplug my consoles when I'm leaving the house, going to sleep or otherwise not going to use it.
