Hey, I'm a new Toshiba user. M500-S433. Got mine during PC fair.

So I have this problem, sometimes when I'm using the laptop, the screen will suddenly black out and then recover few seconds later... Then a notification bubble will pop and it says the NVIDIA kernel driver has stopped responding and recovered. At first I thought it was momentarily and one-time only but recently it happened a few times, is there ANY way to make this problem disappear permanently?

Thanks!

Hihi, congratulations on your laptop purchase  laugh.gif
Are you running on 64-bit Windows 7? My gf's M500- S433 doesn't seem to have this kind of problems though. But a quick search through the internet has shown that this problem is actually quite rampant and there's not much solutions at the moment. Some say its because of heat, some say its because of incompatibility with vista/windwos 7, some say its because of some other background programs which clashes with the GPU. I'm not sure.

In my view, perhaps you can wait for the latest driver (NVIDIA G310M) updates or if its not too inconvenient for you, ask Toshiba to switch a new M500 for you to see whether the problem still exist  icon_rolleyes.gif

I don't know about your gf but although they advertised 64-bit, they gave me a 32-bit version. But since 64-bit has compatibility issues with certain programs, I'm fine with the 32-bit so far.

OMG hahaha M500-S433 users same as me with the same issue -___-"
http://laptopforums.toshiba.com/t5/Drivers...Need/td-p/91994

They released a new driver V196.16 if i not mistaken but i tried it as well the only thing diff with the error is the version which doesn't help!

If as you said change a new set, hey i done so i changed my set 4 days ago with the problem still persist. I bought my laptop in Feb and i change it 4days ago! the next 2 day same error
And i believe your laptop is using a 189.78 driver which is standard at the moment

Yeah I went straight to NVDIA website to upgrade my driver. The problem still persists but not as frequent. Still waiting for a better upgrade. BTW the link you provided is invalid.

Thanks to both of you for replying! (:

I have a problem with my Satellite M500... Sometimes after using it, the laptop will suddenly hang and usually I'll just take out the main power and switch it back on. And I don't know why that happens... So yesterday I had the same thing happened to me, the screen froze for few mins and after that it entered blue screen (blue screen of death)... then the system just restarted... I don't know what's going on and I have no idea what's the cause so I want to know whether my other Satellite M500 users are facing this problem?? I still have the problem with the NVIDIA graphics 310M, BTW.

Hi bro, you are using the M500-S433?
So far there's no solution for the incompatibility of the NVIDIA 310M unfortunately, need to wait T____T (starting to get agitated)
Were you running anything when it hangs? O____O
So far no BSOD with my gf's M500-S433  rclxub.gif

I'm female.
Yeah, using M500-S433... (I'm getting agitated as well)
Yeah I was running Firefox, Winamp and then randomly clicking around, then it hung.
The second time was when I was waiting for PPS (P2P video streaming) to load...

The previous times when I didn't wait for the BSOD to appear and straight switched off my laptop was when I was playing FB games, and tabbed browsing... which is pretty manageable for my 4GB RAM laptop.

Sorry, thought you were a guy  rclxub.gif
BSOD may be caused by software or hardware problems I think. Perhaps you can try troubleshooting by recovering the system discs you created when you 1st bought your notebook (which will reformat all your harddisk partitions, so be sure to back them up), after reinstallating see whether the problem still persists (without installing any additional programs like PPS)

If its hardware prob then perhaps its best to just pay a visit to Teledynamics. Are you based in KL>? O_____O
No problem. (:
What system discs?
I'm based in Selangor, but I know there's a Teledynamics store in Lowyat.

When you 1st bought your notbeook it is highly recommended to backup all your system files into 4 DVD+R discs as backup just in case anything happens to the system files in the Harddisk itself, you can create these discs via the Recovery Media Creator (the name is something like that LOL) program ^^
Yes, they've just opened a new Teledynamics store in Lowyat which is opened even on Saturdays and Sundays (Finally!!!!  rclxub.gif )
If you have any problems you can ask them for help  icon_rolleyes.gif

I just found out the cause of my BSOD.. *drum rolls* the display driver! which is the one M500-S433 is so commonly having problems with. Apparently it failed to recover, hence a BSOD appeared. Usually the screen will freeze, black out and recover with a pop-up at the bottom right hand corner. So this time (and the previous times), the display driver failed to recover.

Problem is, my driver is updated to the latest. However, I checked Toshiba's website for the display driver and found out the one they updated on May 25th is a driver that is an older version of the driver available on the NVIDIA website. So which one should I download? Should I still visit the Teledynamics store?

edit: oh.. may i ask u guys a question? it's about the graphic card... which graphic card is better ATI or GeForce?  rclxub.gif

Just the display incompatibility issue. You can always send it back and see what Teledynamics will do with it.
For my BSOD problem, it's when the display stops responding and starts cracking up. Very annoying issue. I will go Teledynamics and wreck their signboard once I'm free. xD

Of course, it's just a hiccup. Not consistent, just happens occasionally. It's not a major issue, laptop still functions fine but it's annoying.
Like there's a fly flying around your head and you're just too lazy to swat it that's all.

Edit:

New Display Driver for M500-S433 (NVIDIA Geforce 310M), out on 15th June 2010.
Not sure if it'd solve the stupid BSOD issue I'm having, gonna download it and see what happens.

Is it really necessary to get the 64-bit? The sites I read were urging readers to upgrade but there are some compatibility issues with certain softwares yadda yadda. In case you were wondering, 32-bit only supports use of RAM up to 4GB but 64-bit enables use for over 4GB RAM. Suitable for people w/ major task jobs such as video editing, gaming, etc.

Update on latest display driver for M500-S433:
Just now when I was using the comp halfway, suddenly the display blacked out, leaving the cursor behind, then as I waited for what seem the longest 5-10 seconds ever, the display recovered BUT there was no pop-up notification at the bottom right hand corner so I can't confirm whether it's the display problem or not. tongue.gif

Edit:
Even with a new driver, the display still blacks out and recovers.
