dvd+r? actually what's the diff between these 2 types?

Hmm, I'm not particularly sure about the difference. A quick search from Wikipedia says that DVD+R are more recent in terms of technology and are thus more reliable. The shop person personally recommend DVD+R for system files too nod.gif

I din't know there were 2 types until a few weeks ago haha sweat.gif

Just to ask, about the battery, it it's fully charged, recommended to remove it and use direct power supply?
Or just leave it..
*
Hmm, as I've mentioned earlier, based on researches done and also advices from sifus, it can be said that its okay to continue using A/C power even when the battery is fully charged because the computer will direct the power to your lappy without passing through the battery once it is fully charged. However, it is the heat which kills the battery. Studies have shown that your battery will die in 1 year if exposed to prolonged 60 degree Celsius.
Because of that, it is highly advisable to not use/ remove your battery whenever an A/C supply is available. And even when using/ charging battery, try using it in cold conditions.

P/S: There are even claims that you can put your battery in refrigerator if you don't plan on using it for some time laugh.gif

Ya, don't too long don't use... or you can try the refrigerator method XD XD
Nope, I don't use screen protector. My previous experiences with a laptop suggests that I don't really need one. Just need to wipe it clean from time to time, its highly unlikely that you will scratch your screen 1 nod.gif
But if you really want 1, its good also la, just in case icon_rolleyes.gif

Haven get a nice cooler pad,
From toshiba pc health check, the fan is at 0%.. means not moving at all..
The cpu temperature is at 47% and the fan 0%..
BUt sometimes restarting the notebook the fans run at max speed, and brings out lots of heat and cools down quite fast.. Wonder why, to save energy?

Added on April 17, 2010, 6:12 pmoen more thing, i've checked the energy power plan, It says fan runs at max speed when temp rises.. Might be the Toshiba eco thingy working.. Blur

PC fair is crowded with people, T110 sold out but the price are the same.. Lucky^^

The heat at the notebook is on the left portion.. But still acceptable to me..

Added on April 17, 2010, 9:58 pmLatest update, the fan only starts when the heat is over 50 percent, now burning the backup dvd.. that's why can monitor the fan speed.
*
Eh? Is there a Toshiba Eco Utility button on the T110?
Wah, I din't noticed there's a PC Health Check program on my system, just enabled it rclxub.gif
Perhaps you can change the settings by pressing on the fan button of the PC Health Check?

For my unit, the Eco Utility is turned on by the user 1 o shocking.gif Weird....
Yup, all Toshiba models are heaty on the left portion hehe laugh.gif

Hi! Toshiba Satellite L510 new user reporting in  rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif

After running through the laptop with Window 7, there is still a lot questions on some Toshiba pre-loaded software. Hopefully with current user and new user would kindly share some experience here.

1. Before buying this laptop, the technical personnel mentioned that we do not require to create back up for the Window 7, drivers, Toshiba utilitise, or bettter know as Product CD. Why there is Recovery Media Creator, that require 4 DVD to create Product CD? If in future, formatting the laptop is require, how would be all the Window 7, drivers to be re-installed as originally when we bought the new laptop?

Hopefully the experts here would be able to clear my doubts here  icon_question.gif

Thanks notworthy.gif
*
Wow, congratulations on your new Toshiba laptop, I'm sure it will serve you well. Which L510 models did you buy? The L510- S4318? laugh.gif
Well, there sure are a lot of pre-loaded bloatwares in each Toshiba, and not all of them are particularly useful I would say hehe.
You will be using the Eco Utility program, the Toshiba Reel Time, the Toshiba HDD Protection and the PC Health Monitor most I would say laugh.gif
Do take note that Windows 7 provided by Toshiba comes in options of 32-bit and 64-bit. If you bought the L510 with 4GB DDR3 RAM, it is advisable to switch to 64-bit unless you have programs which are only supported by 32-bit systems nod.gif If you use the 32-bit system you will not be able to use your 4GB RAM to its fullest rclxub.gif

The technical personnel is partially right. You may notice that you do not get the total amount of free Harddisk for your laptop. This is because Toshiba has a hidden harddisk containing all the important system files. Still, it is good to backup all those files just in case the Harddisk gets damaged. You will need four DVD+R (note DVR+R, not DVD-R) to backup all your recovery files.
Have you partitioned your Harddisk? Usually formatting only involves your main partition, other partitions (including the hidden partition) will not be formatted, so it shouldn't be a problem. It is said you can reinstall your system through those backup disks (haven't tried out myself though hehe laugh.gif )

I hope I din't miss out anything keke!
Anyway, welcome to the gang, feel free to ask some questions and also, if possible, do leave some reviews regarding your laptop here, I'm sure it will be most helpful for other potential buyers icon_rolleyes.gif Arigato!

Hi PF T.J, thanks, feels great to be proud owner of Toshiba. Pardon me for not able to remember the model  tongue.gif  and this laptop is 4 Gb RAM and 500GB Hard Disk with i3 processor. Really great info and i just have to agree with you that is good to make a recovery product CD.

The problem now after viewing your comments, the tech personnel didn't explain detail which is preferable on using 32 bit or 64 bit. What he explain for 64 bit usage is more to graphical usage, which i'm not using much of that. So he suggest me to go for 32 bitsys. And regarding the partition disk, during the whole process of window 7 start up, there is no query of asking me to partition or not. Hmm...so now only one partition, which i'm really not looking for.

How would you be suggesting to create partition hard disk in my current state? Would it be possible to do it without formatting everything?

Will venture with this laptop and hopefully will comeout a constructive comment which might useful to potential buyer and current user as well.

thumbup.gif
*
Hmm, I think you must be using the one with the ATI 5145 (L510-S4318B), it can be used for moderate gaming too laugh.gif

Well, it depends on what you will be using the notebook for. If you are just using it for normal applications (Office, Photoshop etc.), then its best if you can upgrade to 64-bit so that you can fully utilize all 4GB of your RAM--- your notebook will be way faster. Usually people revert or maintain 32-bit systems only when the specific applications that they use cannot support 64-bit systems. You will only be able to use approximately 2.98GB of your RAM for a 32-bit Windows 7, meaning that you another 1GB of your RAM will be underused rclxub.gif I'm not really sure how to convert from 32-bit to 64-bit though, I know the theory but do not dare try it on my notebook, its best if can find some technicians who know how, like those in lowyat plaza laugh.gif

Yes, Windows 7 allows you to partition your harddisk by yourself without any formatting.
Refer to this link, it should be easy (applicable to W7 too): http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...-windows-vista/
If you encounter any problems, do let us know, we can help you hehe icon_rolleyes.gif

Hehe, hope to hear from you soon ^^

Hey, I'm a new Toshiba user. M500-S433. Got mine during PC fair.

So I have this problem, sometimes when I'm using the laptop, the screen will suddenly black out and then recover few seconds later... Then a notification bubble will pop and it says the NVIDIA kernel driver has stopped responding and recovered. At first I thought it was momentarily and one-time only but recently it happened a few times, is there ANY way to make this problem disappear permanently?

Thanks!
*
Hihi, congratulations on your laptop purchase laugh.gif
Are you running on 64-bit Windows 7? My gf's M500- S433 doesn't seem to have this kind of problems though. But a quick search through the internet has shown that this problem is actually quite rampant and there's not much solutions at the moment. Some say its because of heat, some say its because of incompatibility with vista/windwos 7, some say its because of some other background programs which clashes with the GPU. I'm not sure.

In my view, perhaps you can wait for the latest driver (NVIDIA G310M) updates or if its not too inconvenient for you, ask Toshiba to switch a new M500 for you to see whether the problem still exist icon_rolleyes.gif

They released a new driver V196.16 if i not mistaken but i tried it as well the only thing diff with the error is the version which doesn't help!

If as you said change a new set, hey i done so i changed my set 4 days ago with the problem still persist. I bought my laptop in Feb and i change it 4days ago! the next 2 day same error
And i believe your laptop is using a 189.78 driver which is standard at the moment

Yeah I went straight to NVDIA website to upgrade my driver. The problem still persists but not as frequent. Still waiting for a better upgrade. BTW the link you provided is invalid.
Thanks to both of you for replying! (:

All new Toshiba notebooks come with 32-bit and 64-bit option, meaning that you can revert/change to 64-bit/ 32-bit at will nod.gif Well, 32-bit is okay, just that cannot fully utilize the RAM lo cry.gif The difference can be big especially while gaming.

Just went to Teledynamics today. Yes, the guys there are aware of this problem which only occurs in the Satellite M500-S433. No problems for the Portege M900 which is using the same GPU. They said that they are trying to solve the problem so in the meantime, we can check for updates via NVIDIA/ Toshiba from time to time. I will post updates should there be any news icon_rolleyes.gif

Here's my story of my beautiful yet elegant M500-S433

On February i bought this laptop, was happy with it  biggrin.gif great sound harmon kardon! stylish etc etc  thumbup.gif

However on the 2nd day of having this laptop, the disaster begins! Screen goes blank for 1 sec and the balloon pop
out saying "Display Nvidia Error" so yea i got it once and i thought it recovered so i didn't bother but unfortunately it appeared again several
time and i got fed up. Called the person who sold me the laptop, he ask me to bring it over for some checking but they couldn't find the
solution for it either  doh.gif  so i kept the laptop for awhile trying to troubleshoot it myself but the problem actually worsen.

I finally made the decision to call the Manager there which it was quite tough but i got thru so yay for me. Complain to him about the problem
and he decided to change a new set for me. Fair enough right?! ok happy with the deal so i manage to change only in April to be more accurate
just last 2 week on the 20th i think because they need to order new stock.

Was happy that i called the manager, another new laptop babeh!  brows.gif lol! but then the next day, same problem persist..... i stopped
window update on this new set when i 1st gotten it btw. So yea, called the manager again saying it occur the same problem  doh.gif  he got shocked
as it was a new set -____-" he said he will bring my old set to teledynamics to find out wht is the problem to it. He was very very friendly and
helpful  thumbup.gif  glad i bought from him  biggrin.gif

However, teledynamics they can't even figure whats wrong with it [can you actually believe that]? i got fed up and decided to change to VAIO which
the manager allows me to  thumbup.gif  i chose VAIO EA16 that haven't arrived in any of the stores -____-" but today i got a call from him
saying that the model is finally on its way  drool.gif

Thats my tragic story of the M500-S433. It seems teledynamic diagnosis is that the Nvidia video card is not compatible with the other hardware or
sth. Sound crappy enough.

Nope, I don't plan on reformatting at the moment.... Perhaps half or 1 year later. I'm okay with my notebook's performance now. Games are running very well so there's no real need to change. Some more I don't want any incompatibility issues to arise once I switched. The programs I'm using I don't think are supported by 64-bit OS rclxub.gif
