hi bitrate MPEG2 is very good quality... probably rated 2nd after H264 codec (out of three approved for blu-rays).. however only BD medium with 50GB storage can afford this hibitrate luxury... broadcast standards would probably be reduced bitrate MPeg2

There is no broadcaster in the world broadcasting in 1080p, it uses too much bandwidth and there is no agreed standard. DirectTV in the USA has 1080p but only for downloaded over broadband content not broadcast over satellite.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p - quote from the page:

There has been some research on 1080p, but mostly at a reduced frame rate which kind of makes it pointless. The industry is waiting for better encoders and an agreed standard.

If you wanted Astro to wait for 1080p then HD would have been at least 2 years away and the decoder so expensive they would have to charge you for it and each channel so expensive to broadcast they would be charging 20 bucks per channel! As this price they would "sell" less of them and the lucky few would be paying a fortune! I know which I would choose!

As I said in another post the HD Astro is broadcasting is one of the best in the world that I have seen (and I have seen hundreds!), the USA is the worst as it is MPEG2 HD!

On my Astro B.yond media box at home I have a great HD picture and the SD looks better than before thanks to the aspect ratio handling and that fact that the SD shows the full overscan (giving about 30% more picture).

For best results on your TV turn off all the features, use no picture enhancement, turn down the saturation (my friends LG shipped in "vivid mode" it looked terrible) and switch off any 100hz or 200hz modes. Astro has spent millions of bucks delivering HD and it is the best it can be as they transmit it, there is no clever electronics in your TV that will make it better... will a $10 chip in your TV improve a picture that has been through a multimillion broadcast center ran by experts? I doubt it!

So, the picture of SD channels have improved under B.yond?

When called CS, i'll direct give them my account no. and informed them that the installer have not contacted me since last week. Then after waited a while, then he said my B.Yond account has been activated and now only waiting installer
to pick-up decoder from Astro, Ipoh. Then i asked again, who is the technician / installer who is in-charge my
installation, then i waited a while... then the CS gave the installer's full name and h/p no.
After finished with the CS, i quickly called the installer.. he said he didn't received any instruction from Astro
yet. So he told me i better wait. Once the cust. order sheet has been assigned to him, he will calls me back.
Sigh.. Astro is slow assigning order sheet to installers in Ipoh.

Just called CS she said she wld check on it,she too surprised why no installer called ! I think the Beyond Telemarketing Team is unable to handle things ! Try calling 0374919888 you wl know how efficient they are, the number was given by CS.

Yes, MPEG 2 with zero compression looks fantastic, but in the USA they have to compress to 2 HD channels per transponder using MPEG 2 on DVB-S, this limits them to about 18Mbits, which does look terrible!

(technically MPEG 2 can be a pure I frame sequence, at which point it is like a stream of full frame jpeg photos, looks amazing but you need 200Mbits/s for that, this is mostly used in HD production and digital cinema)

Why is mpeg-2 at 18Mbps bad? It really depends on the media type...if its full of action, flashing lights etc...then yes its bad... esp for concert with lights flashing, fire blasting etc.... but it looks nice for a normal motion music video =D

Anyway, lets hope astro maintains this good quality for a long time!!! =)

So, the picture of SD channels have improved under B.yond?
*
Yes, this is for two reasons. Even on an SD TV the Astro B.yond media box will be better quality providing you connect using the component (RGB) not composite cable. The biggest improvement comes from SD when you use a HDMI cable. Firstly, the Astro B.yond box forces the viewer to keep the correct aspect ratios, no squashed or stretched picture. But secondly, and most importantly, the HDMI connection allows the TV to display the full SD overscan picture.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overscan

The analogue connection from the box does not allow for full overscan as it has to assume a lesser quality TV, with HDMI the decoder can safely display the full overscan.

The only downside to the SD overscan being present is that on some channels the data lines will be visible, these are the small white dots that you may see, but its a small price to pay.

Depending on how you do the maths and your old TV quality, the improvement will be between 17 and 30% in terms of visible picture.

AstInst,

Any ideas on the silly codes that kept appearing on screen from time to time? They say its for security reason but I don't understand how this security works.

Lazy to check the prev post. I've called their CS. It's rm80 to change the decoder n dish (only if u own own dish) for master dish, sry la no news yet. Anyway the service is free apr 2010. It's rm10 a mth there on. 4 ch for now. HBO, discovery, history n supersport. WC will have HD, but hopefully they don't kill us with crazy price. I'm waiting for installer to call me to set date.

The two biggest factors in rain fade are badly aligned dishes and RF splitters. In Malaysia I have seen dishes that are visibly incorrect, you may still get a signal but even cloud will make it fade!
*
Agreed, years ago, I had to personally stand beside the installer when he was aligning my dish and I insisted that he does it thoroughly. I don't have much problem with rain fade except during the heaviest rain or the biggest blackest baddest cloud is in the way... tongue.gif

So, how do we ensure that the installer are doing a good job in aligning the dishes, especially now that they know the new dish can easily give out higher signal amplitude? They just align it "roughly", couldn't be careless. Their lackadaisical attitude has to go...

I have seen one installer try to set up a dish without using the satellite alighment device. They simply aim it until we get the signal. doh.gif

Astro installer are getting richer, 1 B.yond customer they get RM80 from astro, later everybody one to be installer ha ha.

M3A Compression is worst than last time M3, Mpeg4 for B.yond average at 4.5Mb/s consider ok la for HD Broadcasting. A$tro sholud align back their M3A to reduce Video Gain for SD material.
