my most recent experience with trying to order hong kong mtr cards online (5% discount) was Malaysian bank cards being flagged as high risk and rejected (even though Verified By Visa and Mastercard Secure Code used).

The high risk was told to me by a Hong Kong MTR customer care person who called me to explain why my multiple attempts failed. Did not try with an international bank card though.

Still no news whether this applies to charge cards and debit cards. I am gonna need to cut a number of cards since I have very few active cards at the moment.

Anyone know whether we can settle 0% installment payments on a card and cancel it or we need to continue holding it?

Just added a blog post analyzing on our PM's statement on Sunday. Based on my best estimates, most Msians will/should only maintain 2 to 4 cards before the savings from the relief is used up.

I called Maybank and they were asking me to wait for official bank announcement. Also mentioned that RM50 will only be charged on card annual renewal date. If I insist to cancel, must walk in and surrender card tongue.gif

Credit card service tax may be absorbed

Banks likely to come up with a scheme for users

PETALING JAYA: Banks are likely to absorb the RM50 service tax on credit cards, considering that they already provide cardholders with rebates worth more than this.

It's just analyst talk with no major feedback or commitments from bank. Damage control maybe?

Hmm... that is new info. Did not realise the RHB travel money had this clause

QUOTE
* Cash Back is on 20% of total monthly retail spend with a maximum Cash Back of RM60 per month. Other terms and conditions apply.
Which means in order to benefit from the cash back, you must have retail spending on it too.

QUOTE(Optiplex330 @ Nov 28 2009, 07:36 PM)
And I am canceling my RHB because I felt cheated in the way they give the petrol rebate. I spend over RM300+ all on weekends and they only rebate me RM4+. What the heck!

http://www.rhb.com.my/cards/credit-card/cc...money_main.html
*
which means in order to get the RM15++ you are entitled to for the weekend petrol spending, you needed to have made RM75++ of retail spending on the card. I don't do it with my Amex Gold CC or Direct Access so these cards now have an advantage...

Unless as part of the Credit Card consolidation exercise you make the card one of your primary card....

Actually all banks will do this. Most EZPay plans will trigger a full settlement if you cancel your card.
I would gladly settle in full if my bank allow me to. But when they put a RM100 early settlement fee on it, there is no point in settling early anymore lol

Cancelled my HSBC cards several week back. Just walk in to branch and fill in the form and cut the cards (ask them for a copy for your records). Considered cancelled.

They do not want the security device back. I tried to return it lol.

Is it instant ? I mean the cancellation. Does it take effect immediately ? We can do the same with other banks such as Maybank but even if they have cut your card into pieces, the official cancellation won't take effect until their credit card centre in KL closes the account.
*
I am guessing the gap in time is quite small as I did not receive a statement even though I redeeemed points a few days before. But then I canceled at Masjid Jamek branch which is just next to the card centre lol.

CIMB really want to kick me out. I have 2 cards with them and fill in the cancellation form for 1 card and they canceled both cards. I was surprised when I can't used one of the card last week. poor CS.  so leave it both cancel
*
Whoa I was thinking of cancelling my Direct Access Visa and keeping the Direct Access Mastercard while waiting for news on the tax. Guess I should hold off until more news is forthcoming.

Or maybe I should just cancel them both since the first of the month (5%) has already passed and no news on a renewal of the offer.

Another bank comments. Yeah the headline is a bit misleading without the colon.

QUOTE
Citibank: Impose credit card tax on per customer basis

KUALA LUMPUR: Citibank Bhd thinks the service tax for credit cardholders proposed in Budget 2010 should be imposed on a per customer basis rather than per card, mainly because it does not see Malaysian consumers being bogged down by debts, its CEO Sanjeev Nanavati said.

"The government is concerned with encouraging prudent spending among consumers, and rightfully so, but we don't see a debt problem in Malaysia. The tax should be imposed on a per customer basis, per bank, not per plastic," he said.

He said this was especially so since customers were assigned their own credit limit, regardless of the number of cards they owned.

He also said while the overall amount of money spent might not change as a result of the tax, the number of cards in circulation in the industry probably would drop, adding it had already been on a downward trend, although he could not provide specific numbers.

Sanjeev (2nd from left) and Citibank head of consumer markets Fabio Fontainha (2nd from right) at the presentation to the grand prize winners of the Citibank Big 50 contest. Photo by Chu Juck SengAccording to statistics from Bank Negara Malaysia, the number of principal cards in circulation as at end-October was 9.9 million, compared with 9.5 million a year earlier, while the number of supplementary cards stood at 1.3 million versus 1.2 million.

The number of credit card transactions as at end-October rose 6.9% year-on-year to 23.2 million. Also as at end-October, total loans from commercial banks amounted to RM764.55 billion, while non-performing loans for the three months to Oct 31 stood at 2.1%.

Lodge a police report yet? The culprit would be stupid since the idiot used a stolen credit card to pay for a postpaid(?) phone bill. Very easy to trace back to the culprit.
