Others think they should buy a stock before any funds own it, hoping the funds will run it up in price after they discover the stock. This is shortsighted. There are thousands of institutional investors today, many with billions in resources. If none of the better performing funds has bought a particular stock, I would stay away. Ask yourself: Why did they steer clear? Whether right or wrong, it still takes their heavy buying to move a stock up consistently. So you want to buy stocks that have at least a few of the better mutual funds making recent new purchases.

To give you an idea of just how big this buying is, if a single fund has $1 billion in assets and wants just a 2% new position in a stock, it must invest $20 million. That’s 500,000 shares of a stock selling at $40 per share! Funds are just like elephants jumping into a bathtub. They are simply so big the water rises and splashes all over the place.

When large institutional investors buy into a stock. If you really want to buy stocks that could go up a significant amount, it is essential that the prospect you select has at least one or two better performing institutional investors that have bought a new position in the stock recently. Research shows that new buys taken in the last quarter are most important, and large additions to existing positions are second in importance.

4) There is something about the kind of stocks the best professionals buy and do not buy. They do not purchase cheap stocks, but rather higher-quality companies that can accommodate their volume buying. You also can determine the industries they are putting the most money into as well as the areas where they are retreating. It is wise to note whether the total number of funds buying a stock has steadily increased over the last few quarters.

Half of my letters brand me an idiot - President Obama

US President Barack Obama has joked that half of the 40,000 letters that pour into the White House each day brand him an "idiot''.
Tongue-in-cheek, the President remarked that his staff did not spare him the wrath of his correspondents - selecting a representative portion of 10 letters for him to read when he returns to the White House residence at night.

"I will tell you, that my staff is very even-handed, because about half of these letters call me an idiot!'' Mr Obama said overnight, chuckling at his own joke during a rally in Saint Louis, Missouri.

The President went on to make a serious point, saying that many senior citizens wrote to him to tell him to keep the Government's hands off Medicare, a health plan for elderly people.

He said he wrote back to these people to point out that Medicare is in fact a federally administered program.

Mr Obama frequently mentions the flood of letters that make it to the White House every day, and has said those selected for him to read help him to puncture the presidential "bubble'' and connect with average Americans.
