Hi,
i'm new to this DLSR . im currently using olympus 1030. its a good sturdy camera but i want to upgrade to dlsr

since im a newbie, i would like to get some opinions from the sifus here on which brand and model that would suite me as a student .

sony : a330 or a380
both in aussie price : a330 twin lens kit costs around 850 aud
a380 twin less kit cost around 1.2k aud

( anyone knows if its cheaper in msia ? )

canon or nikon might suit me? please advise!

btw d5000 costs around rm2750

Definitely the Nikon D5000 would be the best choice. I'm not that sure about how the A380 performs, but it's worth a thought, Sony has been improving.

The D5000 fits perfectly within your budget - I've seen shops selling for as low as RM2600 too.
I think I have one of those old Olympus models too. Truth is that those suck. Even the current Olympus PNS cameras suck.

Go try a Panasonic Lumix/Canon Ixus. Trust me you'll love them.

For your budget there should be the Canon Ixus 95 IS, that's all I know of though  blush.gif haven't been keeping up with compacts lately.

thanks for the info

well actually around 2.7k already super max for me. cant imagine my mum's reaction shocking.gif
it is my own money but still ..... u know.. 2.7k....

sony 380 is around 2.4k for twin lens kit so yea i think its not bad right? but no video mode sad.gif

in dilemma now..would be great if i get sony ( heheh sony fan! ) but nikon is the pro.

from ur pov le..im super newbie ma..i dont really know those flash stuff etc etc.just that my digi cam already a few years already...video mode also rosak...time to retire..so though invest on dslr. i really dont need like super pro..

small size would be good too ( am i girl..dont want to carry big ass camera ) hahah...

as far as iknow sony doesnt have video mode right?

what is the cheapest model for nikon to have video? d3000?

i found d5000 body at lelong for 2.2k ( good?? ) y is it better to buy body only? i mean usually they bundle would be cheaper right?

Hmm, it's quite okay, well considering it's an entry-level superzoom. Not much I can say as I haven't used one of these before. Fujifilm is quite a good brand though.
Then you might want to consider a Canon EOS 450D? It has no video mode and no flipping LCD, but it's around RM2.1k-2.2k. It's a really good camera too. I am not so sure about how well the Sony DSLRs perform, cause I haven't really gotten the chance to test it thoroughly.

If you want small size, you'd be better off heading towards the Olympus Pen or the Lumix G1/GF1/GH1 cameras. Those are well outta your budget though.

Also, the cheapest model is the D5000. And yes, Sony doesn't have video mode yet. I think they'll be coming out with it soon though.
*
thanks once again.

nah, i'll pass on canon, for that i think i will consider for sony since canon also no video and no tilt lcd. tsk tsk nikon... rclxub.gif

how soon are we talking bout ? i dont want to buy it next month then a month later new models comes out..lol

Adding on, having a twin lens kit doesn't mean that the two lenses that come along in the kit are good lenses. Most of the time they're the most entry-level lenses available and optically they do not perform as well.

damn i will miss pc fair in april sigh,..tot can get a good deal there..

oh? which lens do u think its good for a beginner like me? i dont need pro one le...i mean i dont want to fork out a few more hundred on something i wont/or dont know how to make use rolleyes.gif

Quite an ok price. Your choice whether you want to bargain further and get an SDHC card/lens filter/cleaning kit/tripod/etc, or settle with the deal. Remember though the buyer is always the one that gains  nod.gif I'd really recommend you to bargain a little with the dealer.

this is the cheapest promo in aust i think

W/18-55mm VR & 55-200mm VR twin lens kit, bag, tripod, warranty and 4GB memory card. 12.3 megapixel. 11 point area AF.

for the price of 1.4k aud ( around RM 4.2K ?? )

so i want to know how much is that extra 1 lens? ( 4.2-2.8k ) around RM 1.4K?

@dvlzplayground:

Most of the people are looking to start off here, not jump a few notches and start shooting with prime lenses, so please recommend accordingly, thanks mate.

@PVCpipe:

The Nikon D3000 is an entry-level DSLR which costs Rm2k+-. The D5000 costs slightly more, but as the price states, it's a notch up from the D3000. It costs around RM2.7k.

It depends whether you want to spend all the RM3k or not. You could settle with the D3000 and save a thousand bucks or head for the D5000. After all both are still DSLRs. It's entirely up to you though.

@lms2005:

All Canon lenses (EF mount) have AF motors in the lenses itself.

QUOTE(dvlzplayground @ Feb 25 2010, 11:08 PM)
okay sorry for the simple recommendations tongue.gif let me explain a bit

the D3000 is nikon's cheapest dslr among the current models. the D5000 takes slightly better pictures (but honestly most people wont know the difference), can also shoot videos, and also has Live View function. Live View is how the image seen by the lens is showed on the LCD, much like how compact cameras n even camera phones work. D3000 dont have this function, you have to frame ur shot using the small 'window' called viewfinder much like film cameras. another pros of D5000 is that u can tilt the screen smile.gif

the 18-55 lens is kind of the 'basic' lens, and normally D5000 and D3000 are sold with this lens included. basically it's a 3X zoom lens smile.gif

so the most important thing is for u to ask urself if u want to record videos or not. if yes, then go for D5000. 2ndly, think about Live View. i think most of us here dont need it, but it's pretty handy when u have to aim the camera at weird angles (e.g. in a crowd, u can hold the camera above ur head, tilt down the screen n shoot pics w/o worrying ppl obstructing ur view). apart from these two, the differences are quite negligible. u can get the D3000 and save the extra money for something else, or juz buy the D5000 and know that u can shoot videos n have live view when a situation calls for it smile.gif

either way u should get a UV filter for ur lens. buy reputable brands like Hoya or B+W

Ditch the hood, useless. The 4GB card, forget the price, they just say like that to convince you. Filter too.

Try to bargain down to about 2.6k-2.7k. And get a bag.
Sounds too good to be true.
Both are equally good though some claim the 95 is better. Go test both out and see which one is most convenient to you (easy settings, etc)

thanks.
correction, price quoted was for sandisk extreme

i dont want the bag.will get crumpler instead.. isnt filter to protect the lens?
