May I recommend the Panasonic Lumix LX3?
It's very good for panaromic photos as it's got a wide angle of 24mm.
It's also got HD Video Recording (at 720p if not mistaken). I have seen the quality of it which is quite good but can never be compared with a HD Camcorder.

Yes i do know that the LX3 is a very good camera but the price is abit too steep.May i know how much is the cheapest LX3 around?If not mistaken, the retail price is about RM1700

LX3 retails about 1500 to 1600. Check out the Garage Sales section for a bigger picture (no pun intended, lol).

Cons of S90:
S90 doesn't have a hot-shoe mount for flash.
S90's lens (28mm) isn't as wide as LX3 lens (24mm).
However, S90's lens is more tele (105mm) but LX3 lens isn't so much tele (60mm).
LX3 is also said to have better build quality than S90 (Sorry Canon-ers...)

Cons of LX3:
LX3 isn't as compact as S90 because of it's protruding lens and lens cap...

Btw, I'm on no side (neutral). I am however, a Canon DSLR user...

Hey can give any advice on canon 55-250mm vs tamron 70-300mm ? does the IS in 55-250 really make that much of a difference ? Tamron has a 1:2 macro and a long zoom so it seems like a good choice to test both worlds before I spend more money in either one.

The price that you're quoted for the Canon EF-S 55-250 IS at RM950 is way overpriced!
I got quoted for RM800 and it was a walk-in-price at Key Color, The Garden (no bargaining).
Yes, I'd recommend the 55-250 (that's what I'm currently using). It's got "IS" which is very important in telephoto lenses.
Scrap the idea about 1:2 Macro. A real macro lens is when it's 1:1

Get the Nikon D90.
It's got better specs and is in a different range when compared to the 500D (which I'm currently using).
The D90 is a semi-pro body. However, the 500D is an entry-level body. Don't buy the 500D just because of HD Video Recording.
When you're recording at Full HD 1080p, the frame rate of 20 FPS is poor. You'd require at least 30 FPS...
Just my 2 cents, I'm not sure about Sony though.

You must first ask yourself. Do you want Full HD Video Recording (1080p)?
If you do, don't forget that it's a measly 20 FPS (30 FPS would be a much better rate).
Both of them have about the same specs so it's up to you (end-user) to actually go to the shop and feel the camera. Some people may prefer the design of the Canon (compact and lightweight) while others may prefer more weight to their DSLR (hence the D5000).

That's what I meant. Who would wanna record at Full HD 1080p when it's only a measly 20 FPS!? I too admit that I am forced to record at HD 720p for a "smoother" view.

Just to tell you that I didn't buy a DSLR for video recording.
If I want video recording, I've got my trusty HD Camcorder (Sony).
Not to mention that I rarely use the Live View cause it drain battery...
Also, I don't worry about battery juice cause I've got BG-E5 (Battery-grip) with 2X Lithium-Ion batteries providing juice for the camera.

rm2000 not enough for D90 eh . all DSLR can take good pictures...juz depends on lens / flash / how u take pictures. advice #1 get low-range models 1st (the d90 is very good, but im not sure if u should spend that much) and #2 go to a camera shop n play with different brands...see which menu u like better. dont let the salesperson brainwash u into a certain brand

Basically, you can get either Canon EOS 1000D or Nikon D3000 within your budget.
The Nikon D3000 features a 3" LCD screen and 11 points AF system, which has a slight advantage over the Canon EOS 1000D.
They're pretty much similar, just test them both, and which one feels better to you, just go with it.

It has a 3" LCD, 9 points AF, 12.2MP.

You've gotta ask yourself whether you need the video recording capability of 500D or not, if not, your choice is obvious. Even if you need the video recording capability, note that it would be only recording at 20fps @ 1080p, which is not advisable. Therefore, you might be limited to shooting 720p to enhance the quality to 30fps. For me, I would rather choose the 450D, and save up for a 430 EX II Speedlite, or a EF 50mm f/1.8 II.

I would recommend the Canon EOS 1000D.
It's an excellent body and paired with a good lens, it can take excellent pictures.

Don't forget the LCD Screen Protector (3") and the memory card.
Please don't fall into traps in which they lure you to purchase unnecessary accessories like wind-angle/tele converters (for a rip off).

May I recommend the Nikon D3000.
It's got "Guide Mode" which is very useful for newbies.
However, you might wanna try both DSLRs first. I prefer the Canon EOS 1000D cause when I tried my friend's D3000, the options (ISO) is quite hard to be accessed (or maybe I'm noob at Nikon GUI and did it the long way) .

Definitely got for the 450D if you don't need 500D's screwed up HD Video Recording at a slow 20 FPS!
At least, 30 FPS would be better at Full HD 1080p. However, 30 FPS is available at 720p. (But recording at 1080p is still much better ).
The money you save should be used for a flash (Nissin Di622?) first cause it's more versatile.

I'll also recommend 450D + a flash gun + extra lens. Flashgun is very useful at low light condition and give you a sharper image.

Do 500D will much better than 40D?

500D is entry level while 40D is intermediate level.

there r various brand of filter available in the market... from cheap plak brand to the most expensive like Heliopan and B+W (not black and white photography)...
the cheapest u can get for few tenth ringgit until few hundreds like B+W...
normally DSLR user will use UV as protection to avoid damaging the lens...
about the CPL, more on landscape to generate more blueish sky...

between the finepix J30 and J27, get the J27 (assuming the rest is the same as u said). less pixels = smaller file size = more photos u can take in 2gb

Canon 1000D or Nikon D60..both are DSLR n should be around 2k. but then if u scared kena the DSLR poison from this forum (hehe) get manual compact camera like Canon S90 or Panasonic LX3 for around 1.6k. in some ways the s90 n lx3 is better than 1000D and D60 with kit lens... the F/2.0 lens can help u take nice pictures of ur baby. LX3 is wide angle which is nice for scenery, and the lens can focus very near so u can take nice pictures of flowers. but the zoom not that good, so u have to get near the insect to take its picture n hope it doesnt run/fly away/kill you

dont forget d3000.

oh ya LOL..how could i forget that ;p

I thought if getting Olympus FE-5020 earlier but I change my mind after my fren told me tat the image quality that Olympus snapped out is not good... Sigh... And another thing I would like to know wat is the different between 3X and 4X optical zoom?

dont let people come up to u n say "brand X not good". different people different taste, n olympus has been making cameras for decades already. almost all digital cameras can take decent pictures, so if u like the FE-5020 i suggest u go test it urself...if u're happy with the photos, menu, price, then go buy one..its ur own money

zoom is the range of the nearest and furthest focal length of the lens. usually 4X can zoom further than 3X, but sometimes this stuff is tricky if u're comparing between different brands. again, go to a shop n try urself. that's always the best way

Currently I found Canon give away the 1+2 years warranty for the camera but sell more expensive in the Canon shop.

Regardless of where you purchase your Canon camera, as long as you've purchased (and registered online at the Canon website) between June and 31st December, you're qualified for 1+2 year warranty. The reason you see Canon shop selling more expensive is because Canon is selling their product at their recommended retail price, while other photo retailers usually sell them at a slightly lower price to entice potential customers.

am planning to start learning dslr and now i've around RM2.5k to start up, hope sifu can help guide me on the best and most economical way to start learning.

the 500D is pretty good. ur budget can almost get the much better nikon D90. should be around RM4.2k with 18-105mm lens

i won't buy in miri though haha

of course 40D... better spec than entry level 500D
nowadays DSLR are very reliable... but canon is very famous with error99 is u r unlucky to get 1

easy to use? any DSLR will do the job and it is up to ur decision to buy which brand

nikon and sony r the best choice... or canon 1000D if u wan which is the same budget...
any camera will spoil if u r not well taken care of it

among the 3 i will go for 450D and now market is clearing the stock...
selling for rm2.1k which soon will be discontinued...

with ur budget i will suggest to get a external flash since u r shooting inside room...
nissin flash, battgrip to enhance the look of ur DSLR and 50mm prime lens that is a must for any DSLR user

500D maybe out of ur budget... get the 450D while the market still selling it at the price of 1000D if u dun wan the video function...
if u wan good photo get a good lens... emphasis on lens and accessories rather than body upgrade...

i dun suggest to get the 18-200mm... althought i can cover from wide angle to telephoto range but IQ sucks, image corner softness...
go for a 24-70mm F2.8 and later a 70-200mm if u have the budget...

You might consider the Canon Ixus 100/110 IS or the Panasonic Lumix TZ15?

It's a good start off point for DSLRs, no doubt. Just wondering what is your budget?

The Fuji's work very well in low light conditions, but in normal shooting conditions, I'm not sure. The Canon and Panasonic are marginally better in those cases.

Blends down to personal preference. These three brands are really good ones. (;

so is it advisable to get the Kit EFS 18-55 or the Kit II EF-S18-200mm lens?

18-200 kits are really hard to find. The 18-55 is a more popular choice.

I personally would go for the 18-200. You won't go wrong with it. But it'll set you back about 1K more. If I'm not mistaken. If you have the extra cash, you would definitely wanna opt for the 18-200.

In my opinion I'd go for the 18-200 too although it means another 1K gone. You'll find the extra zoom range useful for a beginner. I started off with the 18-55 LOL. It's a very short lens. You'll find yourself restricted to 'that' zoom range after a while.

Not really. The 110 is hovering around the RM1k price range, while the 100 goes for around RM700-RM800. Good luck securing your deal. (:

And if you're considering the Panasonic, it's been out for a while already, but I think it is still a worthy contender.
