i'm bout to start paint work on my tiny apartment next week...well actually not me who's painting but the reno contractor but they only providing the labour & i'm supplying the paints...

Went & spoke to a fren of mine who runs a hardware shop..he recommends me Mr. Paint Man..anyone with experience with this brand?according to him MPM is started with a bunch of experienced ex-nippon & dulux paint...dunno how true cos he always tend to exaggerate things...

Also he mentioned Jotun quality so so only..MPM is highly recommended taking into consideration its price vs quality...ICI Dulux is a very good paint but alot more pricier than MPM..

Second question, i'm cracking my head over the color schemes...i know i wanna use the persian khaki for my main & longest wall...with whites all over...now problem is the two main wall i.e. the wall behind both beds in both bedroom...dunno what color i shd apply...most furnitures will be in whites...including both bed frames..floor is laminated wood flooring but color is quite light not dark wood like color...

Any suggestions?

woww...u sure seems to know quite a bit about paints...excuse my idioty, what is actually the difference between 1st grade paint & 2nd grade paint? to me, paint is paint, didn't know there's such big difference...with exception to those odorless or easy clean type...i don't know how to tell good or bad paint except for their brand name...

it seems you're quite a Jotun supporter....but if MPM is second grade paint, what about ICI? i quite like the ICI Pentalite Classic range...MPM has too few color choices...unlike ICI...and...since MPM is second grade rated, i think i will go back to basic with ICI Dulux...

another questions, not sure if you can help, but since you know so much bout paint...how to achieve those really really smooth & matte wall finish? i was at McClients' Florist in SS2 (the corner house converted to florist opposite Old Taste Coffee) and their wall finish is surreal...very very smooth with no bumps what so ever...i first tot it must be some kind of plaster board cos its amazingly flat & smooth...but when i knocked on them (with my fist la, not hammer) i was surprised its actually concrete wall...perhaps someone is kind enough to just visit that place & then can advice how to actually achieve that effect? cos i dunno how to explain them in words...definitely cant take picture..even if can also wont be able to tell difference in photo...you need to feel it with your palms...even i try to explain to my reno contractor also he not able to understand...so far, that's the only place i know has got that really smooth & matte wall finish...

skim coat...wowww...from what i understand, skim coat is like applying a layer of 'mud' like compound and keep skimming it until flat & smooth...pretty much like how they smooth out plaster ceilings' edges or holes, joints etc....

woowww..so many walls...must be very expensive to skim throughout...hrrmm.....need to think 3-4 more times....for walls, after skimming need to sand paper off...then only apply undercoat...alot of work lehh....

hi all,

need advise. my plaster ceiling work just completed two days ago. no paint yet. still waiting for it to dry up completely before start paint works.

i'm getting mixed advises from different ppl so far...to paint ceiling with

a) just Emulsion
b) Emulsion + 2 coat top coat paint (i plan to use ICI Pentalite)
c) 2 coat paint (ICI Pentalite) straight away

they say any one will give similar result. but emulsion only, in layman term, is translated literally to 'dust-water' by contractor & hardware guy...sounds a bit bleak....

altho cost of emulsion, say Nippon Super Matex white is only RM60-70 per 20L can, what i'm concern most is the labor cost. Currently, my agreement with the reno contractor is he provides labor & i provide all the paints. there's no mentioned how many coat of paint is included in the labor works. If i take option B, i.e. emulsion + top coat, means there's gonna be 3 coat to the ceiling. typically, labor is based on 2 coat works is it? what are the pros & cons of option A-C?

also, another headache...my reno contractor tell me no need to apply any undercoat or primer for my walls, cos there's already a layer of paint there. only need to apply at areas which was hacked & plastered back.

hardware guy tells me, to get the most out of paint, need to apply primer (maxilite, matex etc) all over, then only apply 2coats paint....only then will get the most of the paint, otherwise wont get the effect i wanted...colors wont stand out wor without primers & apparently, save more on actual paints if primers is used.

which guy telling the better truth? reno guy or hardware guy. i need an advise from neutrals cos reno guy might wanna cut his labor cost (no need paint so many times) and hardware guy might be trying to sell me more paints....dunno wanna listen to who...

any helps? thanks!

1. Just normal cheap emulsion will do..Unless you are very rich and wants the best of the best, then you can paint Pentalite on your ceiling..
Get the price of both 'fui-sui' and Pentalite..then compare both..you'll get the answer..and also normal 'fui-sui' is meant for ceiiling..

2. My answer will be both are wrong..
Contractor asked you not to apply primer because he wants to save time and works IMO..
And hardware guy, maybe that guy is more to hardware stuffs, so he might not be very familiar with paint..
If you want the best result, go for solvent-based sealer..tell the hardware guy "I want sealer la, not dust 'fui-sui' water la"..
All those Matex, Maxilite, Jotaplast, Koreton Plus all also cheap emulsion paint and is meant for painting ceiling..
*
finally, a sensible answer...i've just decided, for ceiling will apply 2 coats of emulsion..which is better? I believe its either Matex by Nippon or Maxilite by Dulux..

For walls..when going thru dulux catalog they recommend a kind of sealer for walls...i think i will go with that raher than emulsion...like u say which are meant fot ceiling more...i've also managed to get confirmation from my reno guy he will paint 1 coat primer & 2 coat paint...

Now going OT a little bit but still related to paint...i'm planning to install laminated flooring for my floors...and when i spoke to the flooring contractor he recommends that flooring works goes in before final paint works...they scared walls will be scratched during their installation works..

My reno guy however tells me the painting works will be quite dirty...so scared will damage the flooring...also since thy will put in protective plastics before start paint works, they will need to remove it for flooring works then put it back again for final paint works...

A little bit headache...the floor guy seems quite certain that his work will cause damages to walls.

Anyone with experience?mind share what is the best way to go about it?

i'm afraid its easier said than done...painter wanna be there shortest time possible finish their work & cabut...likewise, flooring works can finish within a day..dun think they wanna make a 2nd trip just to fix de skirting...plus u can ask them to protect floor but at the end, if the floor got screwed?who gonna take the blame? Floor guy will say he already protect floor paint guy say he already warn about possible damages to floor...

Anyways, after giving it much deeper thoughts, paintin works are more rough...more likely to cause more mess...while flooring works should be quite clean especially since there's very little knocking or hacking works, just a matter to putting all wood pieces together...if they really screw the wall finish then means they really not careful with their works...

I've discussed with my reno contractor & we both feel the painting works shud finish first before the floor work starts...after painting works, whole area will be cleaned up...easier for floor works...and in the worse case, really anything happen to the wall finish he will get the painter to come back & touch up...

Thanks for all replies anyways!

Added on January 12, 2010, 1:08 pmjust bot the paints yesterday...i think a little bit on the high side...what u guys think?

1) Pentalite 'Amazing' 1L can - RM35
2) Pentalite 'Brilliant White' 5L can - RM100
3) Supreme 'O'Keefe Grey' 5L can - RM120
4) Pentalite 'Twilight Sky' 1L can - RM25
5) Maxilite White - 20L can - RM60

didn't know paint prices can be so high...but still cheaper than what was quoted to me by the reno/painter guy which was RM700 for 1000sq ft area (ceiling & walls) using Maxilite only.

will begin paint works tomorrow...hopefully able to complete by mid next week....

ICI Dulux Maxilite?
and the ICI paint for painting wooden doors and aluminium doors(can't remember the name)?
*
I bot Maxilite 20L - RM60

ICI paint for wooden door & alu (metal) - Satinwood (satin finish) or Gloss Finish - around same price as Pentalite

Can i check, is it necessary to remove existing exterior paint via high pressure spray before can paint new layer?

I plan to repaint but i see many houses starts with water spray removal of existing paint and its very messy, i mean all the paint flakes flying around everywhere.

at same time i also notice the water spray only able to remove like 10% of the existing paint..

So is it really necessary?
