If I want to do DIY project on my apartment painting.
What’s should I concern/aware of?

Is undercoat equal to sealing?

The step is like this?
Sealing/under coat ->putty-> sanding -> 2 layers of finishing coat.
Correct me if I am wrong.
*
If your wall already painted then no need apply sealant also can

The step would be fixing imperfection on wall, filling up holes and smoothen the wall by sanding or grinding if you want

Then use acrylic emulsion paint as base coat then 2 layer of finishing coat or 1 layer of the colour of similar to base coat

Depends on the colour of your current wall, if it is dark colour and you want to paint to light colour you might need 2 or more layer of base coat to cover the colour so that your finishing coat don't look weird

If you are just repainting with the same colour you can directly go for finishing coat too

My walls have many cracked/fine line. Think need to put putty to fill it.

So my steps should be
Putty -> sanding -> base coat -> 2 layers finishing coat
Correct me if I am wrong.
*
Yes correct, putty can fix fine line then sand it down for smooth finishing

What is the current wall colour and the colour you want to paint? If same colour just paint 1 coat of finishing coat is sufficient and can also save you some cost

what is the different between acrylic emulsion paint and finishing paint?
*
biggest difference is the price, acrylic emulsion 7L probably cost around RM50, higher end paint like Jotun Easy Clean cost around RM100 for 5L, Jotun Majestic around RM130 for 5L, i dont know about the price of those special effect paint, for price per liter definitely not cheap

acrylic emulsion might not have the color that you want, and higher end paint got those easy clean and anti fungus characteristic which acrylic emulsion doesn't have it

the finishing for acrylic emulsion is usually matte finish only, more expensive paint you can choose whether you want gloss, satin, semi-gloss or matte and they come in more color tone also

if both acrylic emulsion and an expensive paint is the same color and same finishing, you can hardly differentiate them from the surface only time will tell the difference, that's why a lot of painter will use acrylic emulsion because of the cheaper price

need help to choose the right white colored paint for my house.

I've decided to go for Delux ICI paint but since there is so many shade of white offered, please recommend me a white paint for interior & exterior walls that is easy to clean and does not get dirty easily.

only white not something yellowish.
*
Dulux Pure or Dulux EasyClean should be what you need

the color you can go to the shop and see the actual catalogue which is closest to the actual, the color you see online will come out different color depends on monitor and color calibration

thanks but is it okay to pick a pure white color like the "White on White" as a wall color? will it easily get dirty even for EasyClean?
*
color is depends on your liking, dirt are easily visible on the wall no matter what paint you used, personally i will never recommend yellow or orange tone as it will make the house look old, but that's just my preference

since easy clean is matte finish, it will have those rough surface for dirt to catch on, but you can use stronger detergent or even thinner to clean it after the paint cures

if you really want those easy to clean one you can get those with gloss finish or sheen finish, satin/semi-gloss is fine too since smoother surface is easier to wipe and harder for dust to attach to

do you burn incense or smoke in the house? those will make your ceiling and wall become yellowish in future

Jotun Jotaplast Max vs Nippon Super Matex which one better for room ?

Jotun is much cheaper and more litter than Nippon though.

Both is matt finish and emulsion/water based
*
they are the same, acrylic emulsion is good for base coat or cover existing paint, for finishing layer, i will paint with at least a layer of Jotun EasyClean or higher spec paint

for ceiling you can use either acrylic emulsion that you prefer

@amduser - does it make sense to use a cheaper line of paints for ceilings?
*
Yes, very normal since we don't usually touch the ceiling and we rarely clean it so even cheap paint can last got a long time provide that you prepare the surface properly before painting

Finally got it painted with Pentalite since I don't deal with chalking in the future, the pollution from the haze is bad enough as it is. However I was told that the cheaper maxilite was better for plaster ceilings as a first coat without a primer to avoid bubbling and peeling which happened to my ceilings.
*
there are few causes for peeling, some common one is dirty ceiling or leaking ceiling

Are parquet floors over here normally finished with shellac or urethane/varnish?
I think the floor I'm looking at is shellac because a few spots which have been touched accidently with glue or cleaning alcohol has bubbled and turned yellowish.
*
parquet floor usually is varnish, the floor in my hometown use that and it last for more than 10 years already, but still depends on your usage i guess

i'm not so sure about floor coating though, newer laminate floor dont even need painting, epoxy PU usually for bathroom, yard, car porch and balcony

I see I see...  so, any recommended series/brand?

i saw in nippon brochure, the spot-less seems not bad .. virus guard and odourless would be best, but i guess would be expensive.
https://www.nipponpaint.com.my/assets/np-co...-collection.pdf

but 2 of my contractor also recommend Jotun somehow
*
if you want really easy-to-clean paint choose higher range paint with sheen finish from your preferred brand

i painted both my toilet with Jotun Majestic Perfect Beauty & Care and my room i painted with the cheaper Jotun Easy Clean, the one in toilet is dirt and water resistance now, i can just spray on the wall with sprayer and wipe off the dirt, after a year now it still look new

my room with the cheaper paint still hold up well, but the matt surface isn't really that easy to clean. imagine you smash a mosquito or cockroach on the wall, some of their remains will trap on the matt surface and need some work to wipe it off, while on a sheen surface you can just use tissue to wipe it clean

do beware if you are hiring others to do the work, dishonest painters might try to cheat you using lower range product or add some powder to increase the volume per bucket so they can get more profit from you

if you DIY, and you are using the higher range product make sure you clean off those dripping paint quickly, i have quite some paint dripping on my toilet tiles and is super difficult to remove even though they have not fully dried

i'm hiring as I'm doing whole house renovation.

actually most of the sheen finished paint can do that, you can take a look at ICI dulux as well, they have some paint that come with special finish

i wonder should i paint some different color on 1 feature wall of each room .
thinking maybe slight grey in living room and slight pink in kids room (just 1 wall)

And which white is best for those muji theme?
https://www.jotun.com/my/en/b2c/products/in...x?q=Colour-Card

Chi?
Any ID sifu here? haha  biggrin.gif
*
go to paint shop take the catalogue and view it under the lightning of your house, they have plain white and plain black as well, it is stated in the catalogue

i dont like white with yellow tint or light yellow, i feel like it will make the wall look old and worn-out

one thing to note though, if you are painting sheen/semi-gloss/gloss paint, most likely you will see 2 tone of color, darker color at shady area and brighter color at area exposed to lightning, this is normal as they reflect more light compare to matt, so for matt you will see more consistent color tone between bright and shady area

My experience with Jotun Majestic range similar to yours. It's kinda hard to clean and once clean it has a different shade to the untouched paint. So ugly to see.
*
difficult to clean as in those paint that is dripping off during painting? or you use abrasive material to clean the painted wall? i just use wet cloth or all purpose floor cleaner to clean only

my paint is 3 years old already.

i use wet cloth and filtered water only. it leaves an unsightly mark on the wall once the water dried off. at the white paint it only noticeable from certain angle, but on my blue color wall, it shows out as like white marks  sad.gif everytime i clean a few weeks later, it came back. confused.gif
*
i didn't encounter your problem though, there is no noticeable watermark on my wall even though i got shower water and shampoo splashing on it daily

did you apply sealer or primer before you paint? when i renovate my bathroom i sand down most of the old paint, apply skim coat to smoothen the surface and then a layer of sealer then lastly 2 coat of topcoat

It sounds like efflorescence coz when the wall is wet, inside also wet, the movement of water is not great. Like you use a soaking wet towel to dry yourself after shower, it will take forever to dry yourself. When you use a dry towel (normally) then the movement of water to the towel is great.

https://www.concretenetwork.com/doug_bannis...florescence.htm

the movement of water leaving behind the mineral deposits are the cause..yes this is for flooring but can read between the lines, basically the surface dry can absorb water from inside the wall..thats why you have the white mineral deposits that come only when the surface is dry.
*
sounds like he will need some waterproofing to be done or find out the cause of the wet wall, i recall the landed house at my hometown has similar problem where the moisture seep through one of the load bearing wall and caused the paint to peel at the bottom, lucky it didnt get worst

Like this. 😔

apply a layer of sealer or two, then paint over that patch with the same color, if your wall is just painted not long ago, the new color should still be able to blend in well

or you can try to paint the top coat at small area to see if after dry it will become the same finishing as the rest of the wall or not, if it does then just paint over the rest of the affected area

Painted my yard/wet kitchen with Jotun Tough Shield today, color code is 6317 Alphine Snow, it changes it's tone to very light blue during brighter day and greyish blue if there is insufficient lightning

I didnt put blacksplash, so it gonna be exposed to heat and splashing by oil and water daily, let's see how well it can withstand the torture without discoloring laugh.gif

Hi all sifus. Want to ask advice to paint my hall and kitchen with jotun chi 7236. My home is new with beige-ish wall color, but since my cabinet and furniture will be woody color, i want off-white color to match them. A friend said i just need to paint 1 layer of primer and 1 layer of chi 7236 only. But from my reading here, seems like need 2 layers of the paint color we want instead. Which one should be it? Will be diy to save money, so need lots of info here. Thanks!
*
paint one layer first to see if the painted area can be covered properly or not, most of the time there will be some spots no covered, or some dirt get into the paint and you need sanding/scraping then 2nd layer can cover that as well as some imperfection from the base and previous layer

if the wall is new and the paint quality is good and not powdery then no need primer, just clean with damp cloth, if you noticed the damp cloth got white powder after you wipe, maybe need to check if they added powder to cheat the paint volume

still look good as new, oil and residue from cooking is easy to clean with soap water and cloth wiping

if you looking to paint outdoor, you can try jotun jotashield ultra clean, i think that paint should be good also

Is sheen but not gloss, that's why is easy to clean, I'm not sure if you can choose matt finishing, as some paint has 2 option
