ya...it'll be crazy for myself to do the oyama'ing cuz its like so big area lol and i definitely can't lift the aq by myself or even with another person...definetly need 3-4 ppl for this job

Hey for the feeding of arowanas, why arent pellet foods from brands like hikari and delink not good enuf as compared to live foods?

Guys I wanna ask why my aro not eating? Yeah I know there's the answer on first page but I need some advice too... My aro recently got one of his barbels chopped halfway(dunno what happened) and I haven't been feeding him for 1 week plus now didn't go LFS buy food.... Just now I dropped in 2 guppies he ignored them... Why? And what is best staple for aro? I buy shrimp, crickets and SW/MW every week which should I feed most?

Thanks
*
did someone else feed it before you? haha

imo better try to monitor the water, cuz when my bichirs dont eat last time, was cuz i added in too much anti-chlorine or the water ph had a sudden shift.

ya...i also wana ask...why not pellet food and which food is best as staple and for coloring? biggrin.gif

oh, cuz when i see the pellet food nutrition has got vitamins ma biggrin.gif that y i was concerned. Guess i'll have to see when i have mine haha.

so far my bichirs love the pellets more than the feeders and they grow beautiful and with strong colors. but they do get feeders here and there too la lol

mmm so basically there is no way that an aro can grow beautiful and colorful with just pellets and market shrimps?

*
better not lol...when i 1st time doing water change, my bichirs went awkward a bit...like agressively zooming around the tank like running from ghost...

The advise from the few lfs around my area said the same thing, better not to do that otherwise likely get chlorine poisoning

ya.they feed it with small fish.i already spend rm1xx for dried food but it still dunwan it
*
i dun mean to be rude or be the person that gives you the bad news, but usually those lfs ppl try to hard-sell and not care about customers money etc....

For fish dried/pellet food, its always best to buy the smallest package or even sample package possible to try out on your fish first, if the fish dont like then dont continue and try other types.

For me, every types of arowanas got it's own special characteristics and beauty.
No metter it is silver aro or x-back aro, as a hobbyist i am still loving them and they are attractive too.

ya.i'm ready  smile.gif . btw,i ask lfs for 6 feet aquarium.the lady boss said if 6 ft aquarium they need ask ppl custom made and also can ask her ppl do 6ft steel stand but the top cover she can't do .  where can like that ? arowana nickname are water monkey.didn't have top cover later jump out
*
yeap take it from me man lol, i've went around surveying for aquariums quite recently....i can say for 6ft with cabinet its about a 3.5k budget, for metal stand probly be like 3/4 of that price and cheaper.
I got mine 5ftx2.5ftx2ft height...(lol seriously i have to climb a ladder to be able to touch the bottom of the aq to put stuff...i cannot imagine you guys with 2.5ft height =.=) which i believe is minimal to aro keeping which cost me 2.3k
There are seriously many hidden costs you need to consider.

its best to consult the lfs and plan out what you need to get.....list it all out and sum up the cost.

and crazy a lot of things...

Ya i totally agree with pigpig...
i have no idea when i go lfs...i so damn itchy to buy something...anything....!!! icon_question.gif its like an addiction

For the idiot lfs that dont supply the cover...screw them...i havent come a cross a shop that so ridiculous. Go other lfs and scout around, dont rely only on that one lfs. Remember...you are the customer....you are the boss. You determine what you want and not what they can give you. If they dont have, tell them too bad, no business....NExt!!! lol then they will see money walking away....

Some of my friends ask me why i so nuts to spend so much money on fish....i ask them back..cuz i admire beauty and its the experience and moments in life that matters most....so what about you? why you spend so much on girls? morons lol

Btw guys i just got my oyama'ing done today....its pretty decent...need to let it dry for a day before can put back together cabinet and aq. Tmr when its done and my room cleaned and the water filled with filters running i will get some pix out for ye ya biggrin.gif

haha soz been busy with all the cny stuff and trying to cycle the aq...
yep, i got a few pics of the tank will be uploading them soon, just dunno y its taking so long to upload....gosh i see lightning out there i hope my house dont get struck before i finish uploading...

The oyama'ing is just soso, the oyama sticker for my aq background and bottom base is total rm100, the service charge was rm70 cuz they had 3 ppl to come lift the tank and clean it up.
Basically 1st day they come to lift it up and put it on floor to clean and do the oyama'ing then left it to 2nd day.
2nd day they just come to lift it up and put it back on the cabinet.

Overall is ok, will load the pics soon enuf biggrin.gif

I was just wondering if there was any of those black bio balls that has a hatch so we can put a froggie or feeder fish in it....and allow it to float on top the water surface with the froggie/feeder fish in it.

I think this will really help solve a lot of drop eye issues which come from having the aro stare at the bottom lol

So they took down the tank and cleaned it up and oyama'd it

Then on 2nd day when the oyama sticky paper dried up they came back to put it back up on the cabinet.
I filled the water in mixed with AC, setup the powerhead and ehiem filter...let it run for 3 hours then added in my bichirs.
Yes, i'm using my bichirs for cycling lol, i'm gonna go with the slow moe method of bb colonization by chanigng 20% water every 3 days.
Got a whole large canister of nutrafin cycle bb to use tongue.gif

No rush for me yet as my arowana i still saving money for it whistling.gif

This is a little internal extra filter with jap mat and volcanic rocks, cuz i wanted to make use of the other air pump outlet instead of just providing oxygen only.

The bichirs treat it like thier toilet bowl, here's an example:
user posted image

This is how i take out water now lol, last time i had to use the tube to take out water into buckets which i carry to the toilet bowl ...
Now i just link the tube to the window outside and hope that whoever is walking down there wont kena the water tongue.gif
user posted image

As for refilling water, i have a 12ft water hose connected from one toilet near my room which is linked to the Danky water (not sure how to spell it but basically the water reserve located in the roof of houses).
My preference to use this type of water as it is also considered quite aged water but i still add in ac anyways.

blush.gif hehe thank you very much. sweat.gif

Yeah indeed i actually put that small bubble run filter mainly to move the water there as well as filter a bit cuz its like the water movement there isnt much.
In fact i'm going to utilize the powerhead as it has a 2nd outlet hidden at its side where i can connect a tube to it to run a overhead filter.

This is becuz i went to tmn desa lfs there...spoke to this nice philipino person (I believe he is the boss) who advised that he can help me achieve a stable ph 6.8 and kh and gh by using simple method of volcanic rocks and corals thru ohf.

Since my ehiem 2217 classic is packed full of ehiem substrate pro, he advised to use this overhead filter method with his volcanic rocks and corals to achieve the desired water conditions. Which just required to be changed every 4 months or so. [Any comments/experience on this??]

Initially i was looking for the "Geo-liquid/easylife ffm" wonder products to achieve stable ph, kh and gh (as read online but so rarely find available in msia). but he advised that he doesn't sell it cuz its a total waste of money and doesn't do much if what you are doing is correct in the first place. (i was like blink.gif man this guy gives passion > greed of money notworthy.gif ) he actually insists to keep everything KISS method.

On the issue of the noise with ohf, he showed me that it really isnt noisy and by using cotton it shud really muffle the noise so yeah...i will trust him and try it out for a month and buy the test kits to test it out for a month and see the results of his advise biggrin.gif

If all goes well then rclxm9.gif its aro hunting time!!!

I'm thinking of a blue based red aro haha, anyone got any idea how much those cost as juvenile(aprox 6-7inch)?

oh ya...... rclxm9.gif GONG XI FA CHAI TO ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thumbup.gif

*
i bought for rm2.3k, custom made to be plain blank in the tank ...no up or down holes for the sump filter (cuz not using it). I think what really cost was the solid wood cabinet lol.
it was ordered from a lfs from sri petaling.
To my finding, any aq greater than 4ft is custom made....at least thats what was told to me by every lfs i visisted...even shah alam XL lol...

haha no la, thats the delhzie. Endi is more flat headed like...flat lol

quite hard to take its pic cuz its always very shy and likes to hide at corners >.<

Btw, i just bought JAD canister EFU-45 lol, it has x-ray uv light to burn those germs and ammonia etc tongue.gif
gonna put ehiem volc rocks and coral chips in there to buffer the water...

man...i seriously pumping in a lot of bio-power...all for the aro to come

basically cuz i been talking with arowana fanatics and some lfs and i did the calculations, i guess it really is safer to have double canister for a tank like mine :S

i got 2 eco-bio-blocks i still dunno where to put them...i'm thinking of adding a small overhead filter to do that lol

The lfs at taman desa has a mix juv. aro of blood red and blue base xback.....man...i am tempted to get that one for a gamble but seriously no friggin idea how it will turn out when older.
Aparently nobody has done that yet on the internet or i have yet to see :S

lol leong dont stress sooo much on the aro xD thats what i did for my first jar 3 years ago and it KO.LOL
*
yah, i just making sure there is enuf cycle for the tank to keep aro nicely. Now still doing the 20-30% wc every 3 days...and then adding back the bb soln.

Just now soooo damn tired zzz....was setting up the new filter had to really twist and turn and squeeze the tubes here and there...got one part the idiot demonstrated how to put a connector thingy on the elbow tube but he never take out...when i bring back home its like wah impossible to take off....so i end up making the x-mas candy like tube upside down with the elbow thingy to outflow the water.... doh.gif

i stuck my hand at the outflow and try feeling the current comming from it..... didnt seem to be as strong as i wished it to be :S
but by visual observation....from the tiny tiny bubbles floating around the water it did indeed show that the water was flowing smooth and steadly clockwise
this i think was with the assistance of the submerged water pump.

neways....next thing to get is the arowana and the test kits and hope everything goes ok.

Btw anyone has ever seen how a blood red mixed crossback blue base aro look like?

unlike human women (who apparently the more mixed they are the hotter drool.gif ie: Kristin Kruek (smallville fame) ) the aros can be like quite ulgy or uniquely stunning haha hmm.gif

Hi Vinlwj, Grats on your bb xb biggrin.gif haha
Its really cute and shiny with good shape. Even newbie like me can see high potential.
Hope to see more updates on your bbxb biggrin.gif

Guys, today i went xl sa....looking at the reds here and there.....i went to ask the manager there...about Super red, cr, br....
He told me cr & br are regarded the same (to him its no difference but how its raised that makes the difference in the fish) thats what he told me and that super red is lower grade red than cr and br o.o!?!?!

I was confused cuz i always thought thosed labelled super red were grade 1 red...meaning they are the best reds? apparently he said that cr and br are the more preferred and that super reds tend to be less redder...more like orange type reds....is this true?

thanks in advance :S

Yep yep, thx for clearing this confusion Moorish and Moe81 biggrin.gif

Its not that i decided to buy there lol, i just scouting around places here and there and tot to go to a place i know has certs for their aros first then visit other places and at that time i was visiting a friends new house close by shah alam so i popped by xl sa to take a look lol...might as well rite tongue.gif i need the motivation so i can perform in my work sweat.gif
My tank is still under cycle 3rd week, still got lotsa time to look for my aro neways biggrin.gif no rush icon_rolleyes.gif

With regards to the international standards i really agree with you....thats what got me confused with the xl sa in the first place. I was asking them about this and i guess at that time the person was probly a bit busy to give me a bit of clarifications i needed or he was kinda ignorant of the 'international standards' i've been studying and researching on prior to actually getting the aro. Everyday i come back home and got free time will be looking at pictures of aros (hopefully labelled) and trying to see the differences as described about br and crs. Cuz by right the originally cr is a late bloomer with slightly broader body (when mature) and supposedly obvious diamond shaped tail. Whereas br is fan shaped tail and slightly slimmer and lengthier. Thats what i read up neways. But when i went there at the xl sa i took a look and thought that what i actually been reading up in theory and applying was totally different lol....it was ridiculous trying to see which was which there and thats when i ended up trying to ask the boss there for advise which he didnt seen very keen to explain much. He never even told me about thier grading system but rather that br and cr are same and sr are just lower grades....thats it =.=" i try asking about fan shaped, diamond shaped ...blue core etc...he just hit me with one sentence (its your tlc) and thats it =.="
Either its cuz i dont look like i drive a benz or i look too young for him that he doesnt take me seriously =.= (i'm 26 btw lol). Maybe i shud get a fake benz key and hang it on my chest pocket and see the difference in attention. Would be really funny if it actually worked. doh.gif

What other places would be recommended for nice red aros....i really want to have a red aro with nice deep blue/purple core actually but since i'm aiming to get juv's it will be a bit of luck on the genes and up to my tlc to see how it will turn out. Either ways how the aro will turn out i will still love it as my 1st ever....so thats y i will have to be really picky....cost so much man >.< definitely wana pick a good one haha

Devillsin the super reds at xl sa are priced slightly below rm2k biggrin.gif

Forget about looking for the blood/chilli red species, its all jumble up, you can however look for a chilli/blood lookalike only. For red I would trust XLSA esp the blood grade, chances of hitting a red is much higher, but you'll be paying a premium of +/- 4k.

Sifu Moorish, that actually imo is the greatest looking red i've ever seen notworthy.gif

Was there tanning involved?

mmm for juv br's there they were selling at about rm2.6-8 le i think those rm4ks are much bigger types.

Hey...ye know one thing i noticed there was that all the adults had de. like those 1.5ft ones....dunno if from thier farm or wut but maybe due to the space confinement they are in ler...just hope thier de thingy isnt genetic to all >.<

Alright then, xlsa i will just only look for the br's....really man thx a bunch.

No tanning involve and best part is, the fish is kept in a clear tank, meaning to background 3 side open as you can see in this pic

hey guys, i was just wondering. What would be the desired dKH reading to achieve stable ph7?

i'm using sera kh tester.
i took 5ml of aq water...
1st drop it turned blue
2nd drop it turned yellow...

means my aq dkh is 2?
Do i need to add more cc or wut?
