Hey Devill I'm in MBSSKL... Different school... My tank run for at least 2 weeks before I got my arowana. Although I use old filter, old gravel, old water I still cycle it for 2 weeks.

Yeah goldfish survive than it will be fine. That means no sudden temperature change because this easily kills goldfish. And are you sure the goldfish are "disease free"? They may pass disease to your precious dragon fish...

QUOTE(jackbanner @ Dec 9 2009, 06:06 PM) You dont have to confront or write an email. Talk to him in a casual way and please be nice, but you have to be strong hearted becoz your father may say these things: So if he says:1) 6' aquarium is not cheap. I don't have the money. 2) We just bought a 3' tank. I don't want to spend for a 6' 3) We don't have the space. 4) Don't waste my money. We need money for other things. But u don't have to worry. This is a norm. Most fathers will behave in such a way. U just keep quiet, smile and say nothing. Unless: 1) He is asking the reasons u need it; then u explain. 2) His reason is it is not good for u; for e.g. it will deviate from your studies; then in this case u have to convince him. Other than the 2 situations u just look him directly in his eyes, smile and say nothing. Don't argue. Becoz u won't win the argument. Your target here is to persuade him and not to force him. U will achieve nothing if u argue or quarrel with him. Remember, it is his money! Wait for another 3 or 4 days, then ask again those questions that I have suggested: 1) Dad, I love to have a 6' tank. 2) Dad, is it ok if u buy me a 6' tank? 3) Dad, my friend's aquarium is nice. Can I have it, please? 4) Dad, if I really study hard this year and get to be top 3 student, can I have a 6' aquarium, please? Repeat this cycle again and again. It may take some time but if u be patient and continue with this method u will get it. But I may caution u that for a stingy father it may take longer, may even extent to 1 year. But average about 6 months. He may then slowly make a research on the price of 6 feet aquarium without your knowledge, finding a cheaper manufacture or seller and then he'll buy for u. U may discuss with Devillsin and improve this method as he has successfully persuaded his father. Of course his father is different from yours but most fathers will do as what I said above. Congratulation Ben for your new 6' aquarium! 1) 6' aquarium is not cheap. I don't have the money. 2) We just bought a 3' tank. I don't want to spend for a 6' 3) We don't have the space. 4) Don't waste my money. We need money for other things. I just look straight into his eye and say nothing??? No reply what so ever? i only have answer for number 3.... I have the reason... Here's the case with my aro: At first I wanted to buy it and sell it when it gets big, but now I decided not to sell it, so I'm getting a bigger tank. If my dad asks me whats the big tank for, I'll just say there's no buyers... He will NEVER research the price without me knowing, he doesn't have any knowledge of the aquaria hobbyist world! He will only research by asking me to research... Thanks QUOTE Bensow, get your 6 footer 1st. Then, start to think about other things. You need to learn how to focus my young padawan. Have to plan ahead mah,I still have to find where to get the sand... Thanks Now who knows where can get play sand? They look really good. Thanks, for the 3rd time.... |

QUOTE(jackbanner @ Dec 10 2009, 05:05 PM) Ben, please re-read my suggestion. You should not answer any of the 4 questions, because that will lead u to an argument with your father. You won't win the argument. So to be sure, I just look him in the eye, smile say nothing when he answers no? Then I just stand there? This part is the most confusing one...When u ask him to buy a new tank, u know that the answer will be 'no', so what u do is just paste/register in his mind that u want a 6' aquarium and by keep repeating it every 3/4 day, u want him to remember it. U want to make him thinking about it. U should also try to play with his emotion. This is how u do it: U love keeping the arowana/other fish so try to share your happiness/hobby with your father. 1) Let say u're feeding the fish, do it when your father is around and show him. "Father, look at the arowana. The way he fetches the worm is very interesting. He is very aggressive in snatching it!" 2) When u read some interesting facts about the fish, tell it to him. Explain those facts to him. 3) Your weekly routine of changing part of the water, do it while he is around so he may see your high interest in it. When u do a research on the price of the new aquarium or any good offer of a second-hand aquarium, always tell your father. Print the picture of the aquarium and show it to him. But of course, all these must be done in a casual manner, the nice conversation between father and son. Believe me young man, if u do as I suggest, u will get the 6' aquarium of your dream! The emotion playing part: 1)He only asks me what does he eat, he never looks at me feeding 2)He'll change subject... 3)Done that before many times but I dunno if there;s effect... And he doesn't really like people printing unimportant stuff(to him)... I'm thinking of email, I've done that before. And whenever we go to LFS, he just stands outside and say : faster... Lastly, 6' isn't my dream tank, I dunno how large will it be but my dream tank will be big enough to hold - ARAPAIMA GIGAS This post has been edited by BenSow: Dec 10 2009, 11:35 PM |

I know about that... I have no interest keeping arapima now... Need to have a base. And what is the maximum amount of water allowed to change during water change?

red belly pacu. The LFS put it on lowest shelf... One day I squat down and saw them... I bought 2, RM1.80 each. First day I bought them 6cm and 6.5cm. 2 weeks later they are 8.5cm and 9cm! They are fast learner. They started eating in the plastic bag! Nice fish...

Oh Yeah! Just now my dad and I are changing the stand of my aquarium. Then I started talking about upgrading. I said that I have to upgrade my tank. He did not respond, I repeated, he then asked about where to put the current tank, I then told him the proposed place(by me) he then suggested a better place and he did not disagree about the new tank! So it is sure that I'm getting a larger tank, I just have not told him its gonna be a 6 footer... I'm getting it in the next few months. Yeepie I'm just so damn excited!

Thanks for answer. Wow this thread is so inactive... So I wanna share a story..
2days ago me and my dad r changing stands for my 3 footer. I seperate all the fishes in 2 buckets. My aro didn't show any stress until after carrying the tank to the new stand. Then my arowana jumped from the bucket.. TWICE! Bruised a bit on the top but after one day he is back to normal and eating! No stress at all! Wow was I relived... I though my aro will go starving for the next few weeks! But my oscar is still in stress mode, not eating, just staying on the floor of the tank... |
