Hi there,
I've been using Whatsapp for few months now and it's absolutely great. For all the unsure and newbies - check out their official website and Facebook fan page and all your questions will be answered. Best part is they keep updating new features every now and then, its very useful and unique. Your contact list will slowly grow. Be patient hehe
Anyways, back to my real question, a friend of mine who uses Whatsapp in Malaysia has gone to Europe for a 2 week holiday. Using a iPhone 3GS with roaming enabled on Maxis. Question is: would it be cheaper to turn on data roaming to send Whatsapp back to Malaysia (unsure what the data usage is going to cost though) OR; to just send an sms which cost around RM1 for each sms sent from Europe.
Any experienced advise is appreciated. Thanks

QUOTE(nokia2003 @ Mar 18 2010, 07:58 PM) call maxis and they can give you (almost) a fixed price for data per MB, for that said country. Thanks for the info. I saw that displayed on their site. Only issue is, my friend is just going through europe on a holiday hence spending a day or two often at a location hence it doesnt make sense to sign up for each country's price deal. Moreover my friend is already abroad so I wouldn't be able to call on my friend's behalf anyway. I suppose for my situation, only solution now minimize whatsapp'ing to keep data roaming low and sms in the mean time. Or occasionally find some free wifi portal somewhere. Fun part about whatsapp is you can immediately send pics (one of many examples) of their travels whilst chatting which is pretty cool. Thanks anyway

QUOTE(viper-xs @ Mar 19 2010, 03:28 AM) My advice would be do not turn on data roaming when abroad at all cost. Use sms instead as it will be cheaper. Or if you need to use it get a prepaid simcard in those countries. I spend 10 month every year working everywhere so the best would be just get a prepaid simcard. Certain countries have incredible deal for data plus sometimes cheaper to send sms from those numbers instead Apart from that you need to remember that there are alot of background activities that use the Internet feature in iPhone so you can't control it. The price stated in the website is true and it might seems low but when it all added up, you can easily have 4 reaching 5 figures for phone bill. Thanks for the advice. Yea I suppose turning on data roaming could be fatal on your phone bill with some of the apps looking to download info. My friend has been turning it on just to whatsapp then turn it back off. But yeah I guess its safer on the wallet if just sms and only use whatsapp if there is free wifi in the area.
