I will never keep them coz we cannot provide a natural house/cage setting for it in captivity.

Also, they are wild caught, illegally taken away to become pets.

In USA, it's illegal to keep prairie dogs coz of monkey pox. This can pass to human and it's bad.

http://www.prairiedogs.org/pets.html

Pet shops just making money by providing another exotic pet in the market. But honestly, I think gliders and ferrets make better pets than prairie dogs. At least gliders and ferrets are bred in captivity and not kidnap from wild.

u mean stray dogs? my grandpa takes in stray dog, because he lives in a big garden (cos he is a gardener); well...i think they are quite intelligent...if u have time to train it....my grandpa has a this "prairie" dog that listens so much to him; but at the same time, they can be fierce too....

No lah. It's not normal dog.... it is a rodent. Imagine a giant field rat with short tail like hamster.

Selling Prairie Dog in M'sia is like selling the Civet cat as pets in America.
It's a bad idea to try to domesticate other country's pest as they may escape or be abandoned, after that may wreck havoc to local small wildlife balance as soon as they start to populate and breed uncontrollably the new environment without their natural predator. Or worst introduce a new disease that is harmless to the main host but not for the other animals.

I went to petsmore in kepong. saw there's 2 there. each selling rm800. I asked the staff to open the door so tat i could pet them. When she opened the cage, the PD woke up and i reached my hand to it. It doesnt bite me, i just hold it up. I feel its cute cause they always stand up and freeze there. Saw some youtubes from western countries they do keep PDS as pets and they are really adorable.

I guess there's very few PDS breeder in msia tat supply to the petstores. Yes they are wild caught first before captive bred. And i think now US unbanned prairie dogs as pets? Duno if i read properly.

here's a video of farm bred prairie dogs.

I have 1 Prairie Dog as Pet( Mambo ).. Been my pet for 1 n Half year now.. Was a gift from my friend for my birthday.
Well actually i like furry animals..
Prairie Dogs are cute and friendly.. sometimes u can see they just standing and freeze there coz they're scared.. mayb strangers or from shocks.. other thn that they're ok.
Its actually a rodent..some call em Ground Squirrel or Ground Hog... but they're called prairie ''DOG'' coz they barks in a unique way.. more like a puppy. Hahaha mine always barks if i make some sound when he is sleeping, coz im disturbing him..or if i dont feed him.
I would like to know if there are any other prairie owners here.. smile.gif

Did you kept them in pairs or group? I've seen them in documentary and they're in groups? Forever alone okay for them?

i doubt many of us would have a larrge enough space for these creatures. They live in the large open grasslands in the wild. caging them feels so kesien.
