Blinded: better just send your tank to ppl you bought the tank from. Most likely cause of broken o-ring is, in your case: The first time you turned on the co2 after setting everything up, you 'open' fast - turn on all the way. I work with tanks everyday, we turn on slowly, kasi pressurize sikit-sikit ma.

Attached Image

Michanz: do water change (more regularly - every 2 days) and dose with excel. Don't only top up water. Your water column needs to be diluted. Can feel the viscosity of the tank water as compared to normal tap water la.

Ehehehhe...

Moving from DIY to bottled CO2, may be a big budget move; however IF done correctly ie - doing research and learning from friends here, you may end up with a 'superb' tank. The thing to watch for, is the bubble counts and duration of photoperiod. If dunno what bubble count and photoperiod is, not enough research!

Have you bought some timers, you'll need at least 2 timers - 1 for solenoid, the other for your lights. Some hobbyist have tested with co2 release 1 hour before lights on and 1 hour before lights off. Optimum time for photoperiod - go google.

I DIY at the office but use 3lt tank at home smile.gif

Just read 4 pages so early in the morning ehehhe smile.gif

1. To bend hard tubing - use hot/warm water. Dip tubing in hot/water for a minute or two, take out and bend at desired location.

2. RCS dying - over time it will die. Like an creature in nature, the dominant female will do population control. The 'shy' otto will consume during lights off period ie, at night. Why you think your otto always lepak at the back of the tank?

3. Check your water before you top-up during WC. There are various test kits out there to check pH/kH level of the tap water. Don't buta-buta use anti-chlorine.

4. Put a big sign on the entrance to your tank area: NO SHIELDTOX in this room!!! Keep your tank area clean and tidy, so that no nasty insects can breed near your tank area. Therefore, no chance of accidental insecticide spraying, plus your mother or Home Affairs Minister also happy!

5. Always research the plants you want for your tank before you go out and waste money. Buying too tall a plant for a 6" high tank is not funny. You'd want to put everything in perspective.

Your aquarium is an excerpt of nature. Unless you want everything to stick out of the tank, then go build a pond instead! smile.gif

Enough said.

Dunno why ppl still buy buy buy never ask the seller how to keep the fish or plant.

Freestyler87: best you go ask on Betta thread on how to keep Betta. This is aquascaping thread.

FYI:
1. There are rules to follow, actually Nature's rules. We didn't make it.
2. Most of the senior members here have spent so much on this hobby its not funny. When we first started, we didn't know we could get information from Forums like LY. We relied mostly from Google and LFS. If you check or search for a thread of the same name but version 2, you will find list of LFS and even a map showing trusted and recommended LFS in the Klang Valley.

QUOTE(BenSow @ Jan 24 2010, 04:54 PM)
Nice! what is foreground grass and background stem plant?
*
Check PlantGeek.net - Plant placement Guide

CO2 tanks freezing - send your tank for a visual check. Problem with aquascapers is that we have no idea that these tanks are subjected to maintenance checks. We simply buta-buta buy only. Aluminium or Aluminium steel tanks all have markings around the neck of the tank. The markings will tell you what material the cylinder is made of, tank capacity, weight empty and full, and last hydrostatic test date. The above explanation does not work for refurbished fire extinguishers. The only outfit able and certified to do these checks is Malaysian Oxygen or MOX. Your best bet is to send your cylinder back to whoever you bought it from and get them to send for check.

Example of neck markings:
V0.52 W0.53 TP200 FP130 PVAROC 09 03 SH 00761

V0.52 - weight empty [?]
W0.53 - weight full [?]
TP200 - Maximum Tank Pressure (allowable) 200bar [?]
FP130 - Working Pressure 130bar (this how much pressure the cylinder can be filled to
PVAROC - manufacturer name
09 03 - manufacture date
SH 00761 - cylinder serial number

Activated charcoal - efficiency on a stick! dump it in your filter or in your tank itself, your choice.

Shrimp death - occurs more when their skin molts. new carapace doesn't have the hardness therefore these shrimps tend to go into hiding once they shed their old skin. More susceptible to being preyed upon by others too smile.gif

Trimming stem plants
- either trim and replant or pull out chop off 5mm above the roots, cut in half then replant - tedious but looks nicer

best is to figure out a way to make the outflow slower, maybe create a few barriers before outflow hits your tank. With the lily pipe, you'll still have to make sure the water level is constant (water top-up regular) if you use a fan as opposed to chiller.

Aiyor... instead of posting "WHERE TO FIND... bla..bla.. bla!" Why don't you find first, by using the search engine provided by the forum, if still cannot find, then only ask la. READ LA. You know how hard ar to compile... Drive around, walk around, yumchar, exchange, drive around, use scooter around, get lost together. So many pairs of slippers used, so much Teh-O, Kopi-O, Milo-O, sirap all in the stomach; sometimes lousai also got just to get/find the best LFS that sells good quality stuff. Not forgetting so much saliva/air liur/housui used in the process...

Senang-senang ask "where is good shop to buy aquarium plant"... go look at your nearest tasik/lake/pond la... FREE!!!!

Mich: I wanna get pelia from you can ar? Narrow Java same like other Java, rhizome plant. You un-bungkus the plant from the branch/dw, then you cut at angle 2 leaves together, then tie to whatever la... in your tank/room everything also bloom!!! You the man now la!!

Added on February 10, 2010, 2:43 pmakagidemon: Caboomba is the super easiest plant to keep. Perfect for noob. Try to read up on what makes Iwagumi an Iwagumi before embarking on it. Google Iwagumi, search wikipedia, checkout ADA images. If you plan on having Caboomba in your Iwagumi, my guess is your tank is super huge, if not bigger than 6 feet high then forget about this plant smile.gif

Sounding harsh today

from a small patch 3 inch x 3 inch (normally sold at RM5) can be harvested and sold for the same price with 2 months. Riccia's are weeds therefore it consumes and regulates your tank provided its layer is thin enough to get light. If you find you riccia thicker than 1inch its time to trim. However, NEVER do it in the tank. REMOVE and trim away from the tank, make sure the newly trimmed patch is properly tied to whatever you intend to tie it to, stone, wood, fish, rock; coz its gonna be a b**** to clean if riccia floats free!!
