Yup. I had that as on the English treatise I had to do when I did a literature course back at pre-U.

Dante Alighieri (from which the word allegory comes from tongue.gif) is obsessed with the number 3. Three canticles in his work (Purgatorio, Inferno, Paradiso), 33 cantos (introduction to a poem),..even the lines he use in his poetry, the tercet, consists of three lines, creating a stanza or a poem's completion.

It's a poem, so probably that's why people are having a hard time reading/intepreting it. Shakespeare's already a challenge, and add in a dead old Italian's weird three-line poems in, and you'd be having a headache deciphering it. tongue.gif

If you're interested to read his work, get any of the translated version from Cary, Norton, or Longfellow. Or Dorothy Sayer if you still cannot grasp these three translator's works and want a more modernized version (read: Heavily simplified). If you wanted more, I heavily suggest Illustrated works by Gustave DorĂ© for all three  canticles of Dante, it helps with visualizing what Dante saw when he travelled down to Purgatory, Hell and Heaven, and see what he sees. I have this book, and it's very very detailed in illustration, sometimes too literal. Sinners in lower levels of hell buried upside down while they wail for mercy and death? Yup.

Mannn, I wish literature classes mainly for the poems. I really need to get it discussed sweat.gif
I've got the H. F. Cary version, but it's still hard to understand. Heh.

Know any forums which has like each Canto discussed? tongue.gif
