I am new to this thing, but I need to wire up wall-mounted speakers around my house so that music can be heard anywhere in the house.
I don't need stereo separation of the audio. Just for easy listening background music.
I plan to DIY. What components do I need (you can assume I am starting from scratch) and how do I wire all the speakers up (say 5 speakers in total)?

the cable should be in conduit for concealment and run inside plaster ceiling. If you want to conceal inside wall also use conduits i.e. hollow pvc tubes..so you can change the cables in future..

Yeah, I hate to see nice places got wires dangling around...thanks to the lousy contractors and half hearted job.

Azbro & fourzee, thanks for your inputs. My mistake if I haven't put it clearly yet. What I mean is how do we connect up all the speakers? Is it going to be daisy chain where two pairs of wire are going to connect all the speakes?

E.g:
where ----- refer to white wire while ________refers to red cable.

            ----------                -------------                 -----------                  ------------                ------------
SOURCE______ Speaker 1 _______ Speaker 2 _______ Speaker 3 _______Speaker 4 _______ Speaker 5

From where will the source were to be tapped out? From the normal speaker jack?
Would that be harmful to the source unit? Do we need something to ensure the power is sufficient enough to drive all the speakers?
As I have mentioned, I am new to all this but hope someone will be able to offer some guidance.

you can ruin both your amp and speakers due to over loading.. normally connect extra speakers to amp that has xtra speakers connection and designed to drive 2 or more pairs of speakers..daisy chain not advisable..

Check the loading involved and Amp capability..use the link above as reference

But for me...better get to Jalan Pasar amps used for PA system for this setup.
