I thought LG will use ISF instead of THX.

Anyway, ISF got more option to tune than THX since THX still considered "new" thus less options to tune than ISF. However, since THX still considered "new", so it got potential. hmm.gif

THX means if the mode is selected, the colour decoding and the greyscale are within THX specs, for those not interested in calibration, this is the closest it gets.

ISF is memories and further adjustments for those that plan to calibrate, having a ISF mode but not planning to calibrate does not help.

However, to make u happy, the LS90 has both ISFccc and THX. So it really is all u u want. Also to moot, this is pretty well rated but is edge backlit and not the local dimming (that is the LHseries)

BTW : THX certification for displays is not new, LG had it even in the previous generation.

Thanks for the enlightenment. Always thought THX is all about sound only.

Check out the link. I believe the greyscale and colour are explained. The actual Delta E tolerances are not published. But I believe DE1976 of below 10. Don't quote me on that as I cannot get the actual references.

Speaking about THX, LG PG60 is also THX certified, but the blacks are really disappointing. So how? biggrin.gif

If u read, there is no criteria for black levels or white levels. Its more on accuracy. LG are pretty smart as well.

As long as it meets SMTPE guidelines, its good to go as far as white luminance is concerned. SMPTE's guidelines for white luminance is something like 20 - 30ft/L for fixed panel display that is easily obtained by most displays. SMPTE does not give guidelines for black levels.

Smart as in using THX, ISFccc and I believe a prominent designer in their display product lines to give the consumer something to think about even those that know their shortcomings. Their full 3D CMS is superb (works as advertised) and their higher end models have a 20point greyscale adjusment. These mask the shortcomings. And like all display companies, they have their fair share of shortcomings.

However, the LH90 (local dimming LED) is a real strong player, and is a strong contender for Samsung, Sharp and Sony in the LCD world.

Sifu Anfieldude, I was under the impression that to have a proper greyscale, U would need proper black levels in the first place, right? If not the blackest blacks will come out as only grey.

Please pardon my ignorance. biggrin.gif

You need to set black levels correctly (this is the brightness setting) to show just above Blacker than Black (video black - 16). However, this does not guarantee u absolute blacks. When some displays have poor black levels, the blacks will look dark gray in a dark room.

After u adjust brightness and contrast, then u start adjusting greyscale. A wrong greyscale will show contamination of the gray with either red, green or blue. Proper greyscale ensures that your blacks, grey and whites are pure.

Maybe the next time we meet I can explain, or it is easier to explain while showing the test patterns.

However, whatever calibration does not make the black any better that the what the display can do. It helps to ensure that ur set is calibrated to D65 standards where the greyscale is correct, black levels are correct, colour is accurate and u are not crushing shadow detail and crushing white (also ensuring there is no clipping).
