i finally bought Sygic Singapore & Malaysia after deliberating for about a day.

For the current price [USD12.99] and the UI + map; i think Sygic is a good enough GPS app for a secondary irregular driver like myself la.

Tomtom is all-right. I particularly like their user friendly UI, but all in all too expensive for my needs.

For Papago M8, no matter how good the map is; I can't get over how horrible their navi voice for malay language is. Like super seriously horrible, to the point unusable. [to me at least]. Plus, I'd rate Papago's UI way below Tomtom and Sygic.

I experimented with Sygic/Mobile Maps, Tomtom and Papago M8 for about a week in KL and S'gor [KLCC,Bangsar Village, Sunway, Shah Alam, Subang, and Sg Buloh]. I keep coming back to using Sygic, and when priced at USD 13, it's an easy enough decision for me. This is just my thoughts though, as everybody else is content with Papago.

and @uncontrolled - of course la you've to turn on the location service! biggrin.gif

EDITed.

oh no, I bought the SEA one. Am I do it wrongly? I know someone bought the SG & Msia. But added Thailand is  very tempting.

Added on April 28, 2011, 3:16 ami just open the apps. startup fast. I click start, it straight lock to location. OMG.

What do you mean by you're doing what wrongly? It's up to you to buy the SEA one. I rarely do road trips outside M'sia, that's why Msia and Spore's enough for me.

oh, I mean, its better to buy Msia and Singapore is it?

Now I know why you buy. Then its ok bro.

I'm in Penang. Probably I'll get myself to Thailand driving sometimes.

Should I buy 3D building and City Guide? USD4.99 each...
*
When I tried/compared Sygic Msia & S'pore and Sygic SEA - their UI is hugely different, and I kinda hated the SEA's version. That's also one of the reasons why I opted for the former. The SEA's version is not user friendly, with the keyboard being the thing I hate most. I can't imagine typing to find something on the go with that. Then again, this is only my opinion.

I don't know about the inapp purchase, as it costs a bomb for each. it's up to you really, but the 3D buildings are kinda limited to major city like KL and Spore [don't know bout the rest of SEA] so I won't suggest you to buy that. City guide is quite nifty though, although only limited to JB, KL, Langkawi, Malacca and Penang in Malaysia. You might wanna get that if you want, but it's still expensive at USD4.99 actually. I'm a bit stingy, so if you ask me; I'll buy neither sweat.gif

lol. Good for you.

Also, same reason why I bought it yesterday too, and why I said no to Papago; the graphics really is bad!

well, the only reason to buy Papago is Malfreemaps.

@gogo2, true.

I wonder if Sygic accept Malfreemaps. I read somewhere Malfreemaps can covert to Atlas map also for Sygic.

that's a plus if it's true. but i'd bet that it'd be pretty tedious even if it can be done. rclxub.gif

Hi guys,

sorry for the ignorance, but can someone help noob-guide me for installing and updating the papago gps on the iphone.

OR if you have a direct link where i can get a walkthrough, that'd be great

thanks in advance.
*
hmm.gif ?????

installation is direct from iTunes. purchase>>download>>sync. Updating [of maps] is done in the app itself when you're connected to the net. that simple.

is it? ok will try tonight.
IamA apple noob so not sure on it, and after going tru the malfreemap board they were talking about accessing, opening the maps in 7zip and putting it in the installation folder which really just confused me more.

ahhh, from page 57, post #1125 smile.gif it's only applicable if you wanna use custom maps. I use Sygic myself, so I don't know bout the whole process; but it looks kinda complicated and disastrous to someone who's never tinkered with iOS before. You might wanna just stick to the oiginal map. My 2 cents worth laugh.gif

If you mean map updates...of course...you can get them from here:

I respect MFM..latest maps..

How to install them?
http://talkatkeong.blogspot.com/2011/02/ho...o-map-into.html

Remember to backup the original maps in your computer first just incase you dun like MFM latest version which cuts out the UI voice (yeah...the noisy background voice)

anyone currently using SYGIC?..how good is it?...POI and MAP-wise good?...i wan about to buy it....just need to confirm...if compared with Papago..which better?

I bought Sygic SG and MY when it was on sale too. I have used PPG M8 (v8.15) once before as well, and from my short experience:

Voice of navi - Sygic hands down. Loads of choices, even for english - you have australian, british, american. You get limited choices in PPG. You're fine if you wannna use Mandarin or Cantonese, but the English is just OK, and their Bahasa is horrendous. No disrespect, but that Bahasa is unuseable.

UI - Sygic hands down. Rerouting time is negligible and i love lane assistant. The 3D buildings and city guides are also a plus.

Maps + POI - i dare not compare coz it depends on the user ultimately. Die hard users of PPG will vouch for the mfm maps, but im happy with sygic. Hasnt failed me once. I think, if you're used to using PPG you might feel Sygic's kinda defective as you cant install custom maps+poi. If not, Sygic is efficient enough.

You only wanna know bout the maps and POI right? At USD 13, Sygic is definitely a steal; and a no brainer to me.

hands down means?....lol...

from your message, i get :

-UI wise, sygic is better..
-voice, sygic better?..
-map poi - both seemed quite the same..

i got question for u, since u used both..and i tried papago+tom tom before..

- map switching and moving, is it laggy ?
- POI searching for famous latest places - is it always got, or sometimes u cant get the place u want..
- battery consumption?
- if while navigation , i got phone call, what happen to the navigation?..able to resume after that?..or quit and need to start again?
- any crash problem so far?..on iphone 4 and ios 4.3.3?
- how long does it update the map? and how it update - a whole new version of sygic to download or able to update it in-app(in app, press update, and it will request map file from server to update itself)
- does it need any in-app purchase to have good map or watsoever?...i pay $12.99 will get full features?..its original price is 49.99 rite?

aish. had to switch to my laptop to answer you..... tongue.gif

hands down means no competition la. sygic easily beats ppg in terms of UI and voice of navi. [to me at least] nod.gif and if you've used PPG before their map is ugly right? it looks like a 2D printed map and i can't easily read the names of the roads.

for the maps and POIs, you got me wrong. what i meant is that, i honestly don't know. to me it's good enough, but im sure it can't beat the always updated custom maps from mfm. sweat.gif

1. if u meant from point to point then it doesnt suffer from any lagging.

2. i don't think it can beat the comprehensive PPG's POIs, but it worked allright for me. found all the pois i wanted.

3. wasn't a problem to me as i always leave it charged in my car when i use gps, so don't know bout its consumption. it has however 3 options for battery optimization. i just choose optimized.

4. personally, i dont know as i don't use my iphone as a phone. lol laugh.gif but from what ive read in their website, it has the ability to auto resume after phone calls.

5. no crashes on my old iphone 3g running iOS 4.0 so far, so i would assume that newer generations would be allright.

6. bought the app when it was only newly updated, so i dont know the answer to this. im also not quite sure on the frequency of them updating their maps.

7. Nope. there're no in app purchases in the SG&MY version, but in the SEA's version you can buy City Guides and 3D buildings at USD 4.99 each. That's why it's tagged as sale. thumbup.gif You get its full feature for USD 13 [aside from the in app purchases ive already mentioned in the SEA's version nod.gif ]

hope that helps. im sure anyone who've used it longer than i am will be able to help you more. wink.gif

which gps app dont need to use cellular data?
*
afaik, all the major players in GPS iphone apps do not need to use cellular data for their basic turn-by-turn navigation e.g. Sygic, Papago, and Tomtom.

Some functions do need internet connection and this depends on the respective GPS iphone apps. like in Sygic, if you wanna know about the state of the traffic and/or accidents near your route you have to have cellular data turned on.

If not, you can always turn off cellular data in settings.

You can't switch on Airplane Mode though. I don't know why, but maybe it'll also disable the GPS chip in the iphones. [correct me if im wrong] As long as cellular data is turned off though, you won't get charged for using data/internet connection as turning cellular data off essentially means NO internet.

@fadil, iPhone 3G can legitimately use GPS apps as they're installed with GPS chipset.

However, ive read that the iphone 3g youre using right now has the 06.15.00 iPad baseband - and as a result, you cant use any GPS apps (without internet connection) as the baseband screwed it up. You may want to read/google - problem with GPS under 06.15.00 ipad baseband in iPhone 3G/3Gs.

Sorry for that. (that might be the reason why the seller sold it off to you as it's unfixable as of now)....
