My brother is looking for a budget A/V Receivers price range from RM800 to RM1400.

Any recommendation?

What are the requirements first..

DTS, DTS HD MA, HDMI switching etc?

receive av from japan?

Any decent Yamaha,Denon,Pioneer,Onkyo,Marantz mainstream entry level models would be a safe bet.

Only 50W per channel .....seems a bit underpowered to me...

back to discussion...from what i see, not many input/output....so eventually hv to upgrade when our system grows.

but then again for a slim system like this...what more can we ask for

it does seem underpowered at first - there's no further information on whether the 50W per channels is all channels driven or tested with one channel at a time, or whether its a 1kHz sine wave, or a full range 20hz - 20kHz signal. Most AVR power specs are given tested 1channel at a time running a 1kHz sine wave so the real-time power output during a movie is almost always lower than the stated (read this article)

If they rate it like they rate stereo amps (tested all channels running 20Hz~20kHz), the 50W should be enough for a small room - going by the power required calculator. i.e your seating position should not be more than 6ft from the speakers
