hi all, I have never really checked LCD comparison before so need some advises from you all out there cos I'm getting a new LCD soon, this weekend to be precise. from my location, KK, sabah. not much that i can choose from.. swt

however need some input on getting my new LCD. Here are the things i need

Budget : RM700 or more bit
LCD size : 22" and above, preferable 24" above if have
Purpose : Movie + Gaming + normal work
Connector : HDMI + DVI

Some question : to support Full HD i read some ppl say must have around 40" to get the real resolution? so in my case, 22" above is only HD capable?

Are there ones which are just normal square view and not the Wide angle type? i find im still not used to that. Will that affect the HD movies or Full HD movies if im on normal or i really must buy a wide angle type?

Graphic card compatibility : Im getting a new vga soon as well and hoping to get one with HDMI output so can plugged directly to the new LCD i'm gonna get thru HDMI. Can recommend those that i should get too, in order to get the best out of 2 worlds?

Edit : 1 other thing, what are those IPS Panel LCD? what does the IPS do actually, bit new to LCD thingies

Hope can get my answers soon smile.gif

Thanks

Wow, thanks for fast reply bro, I inted to reply here faster but caught up and quite sleepy last nite also haha
Just the answers I was looking for. Yesterday evening I went to the shops here and found few others 24" around <RM700 too, some over bit

Few of it was Acer, Fujitsu and Samsung in the ranges of 24"

Have any other brand recommendations that is better than the Dell ST2410? Yeah pricewise that Dell is quite good just design sweat.gif
The Acer has nice design smile.gif

If anyone has recommendations, do let me know ya. Will be getting one soon

Thx again bro for the lengthy reply, really helped me a lot there smile.gif thumbup.gif
QUOTE(mADmAN @ Apr 12 2010, 05:56 PM)
with that budget u can get some decent 24"...like the Dell ST2410 thumbup.gif
nope...the full HD resolution can be on any size...basically its 1920*1080 for full HD.

its just a matter of how many pixels can be squeezed into the screen size... the bigger the monitor/tv the bigger the pixels...the smaller it is the smaller the pixels. but for full HD the size of pixels is a diff story...watever the size, for full hd, there will always be 1920 pixels horizontally and 1080 pixels vertically.
for full HD...no. if u were to watch full HD on the square type (aka 4:3 aspect ratio) 2 things might happen.. the image will be cut off... or ull get black bars at the top and bottom. full hd is 16:9 aspect ratio fyi

and u should start getting used to widescreen... those square 4:3 ratios are extinct and its highly unlikely that itll make a come back.
before that... take note that DVI and HDMI are the same video-wise. the only difference is that HDMI is able to carry digital SPDIF audio signal in 1 cable....so basically HDMI = (DVI + SPDIF Digital Audio). video quality wise u wont be able to notice a difference.... and due to marketing...HDMI cables tend to be more expensive. so if all u want is video output from ur graphics card...id just go with DVI.

another thing ive noticed is that alot of people in this forum have been having issues with the screen not fully covering the entire monitor when using HDMI...even when set to the monitor's native resolution and most of the time switching to DVI settles the problem. either that or that scaling thingy in ATI CCC.
so...if u dont want audio to be brought through hdmi...sticking to DVI would be easier, cheaper and less of a hassle. besides... built in speakers in monitors tend to be utter crap and using cheap 2.1 speakers via the onboard audio card will usually yield better results than using the built in speakers via hdmi.
IPS and TN are the panels itself... basically different technologies for LCD panels... IPS is far surperior than TN in terms of color reproduction accuracy. but IPS is also VERY expensive. a good example would be Dells 24" ST2410 (TN) vs U2410 (IPS). the ST2410 is RM679 while the U2410 is RM1.8k...thats 1.2k more.

for us normal users TN panel is more than sufficient... IPS is more suited to those who do video and photo editing and graphics design etc.

then i wil give my personal opinions again

Ish... what a waste for 2 sets of R501 MKII getting dusted doh.gif laugh.gif

Might as well selling (or giving) to someone that really need it (considerable me? whistling.gif)
I actually tried out the XL2370 at one cyber-cafe nearby my area laugh.gif. I didn't notice it was LED till I noticed the LED word on the bezel and then the contrast really significant. Colour reproduction wise, far matching my current running IPS in my room tongue.gif

As most people said, for LED, you'll see BLACK (Dark) colours are darker while WHITE (Bright) colours are brighter. I couldn't notice much different between LED and normal CCFL backlite then. Ouch, unless mentioning CCFL bleeding, that is inevitable.

XL2370 vs ST2410... Samsung doesn't produce any 24" LED backlite yet? huh.gif

btw bro, when i called in Dell asking more discount (cos i've been buying lots of stuff from them on behalf my company, still no discount oh, the rep says already best price cos that RM679 is already PC Fair price it seems...

Hehe, both of us were kinda popular in Edifier's thread back then tongue.gif. Many people remember us actually due to that conversation about R501 MK-II laugh.gif doh.gif

I'm still waiting for PC Fair to see if Dell would actually giving out any extra discount to their ST2410, perhaps by then I'll make my definite decision about getting ST2410 smile.gif
Actually, Plasma would be better off than LED LCD for big screenie? unsure.gif

I would actually love to upgrade my R501 MK-II, but the current setting already over-kill for my small room biggrin.gif. Unless my plan to refurnish my living room arrived, I'll just stick with the R501 MK-II at the moment.
Neither way, at the moment it is impossible to find a LCD-TV that can actually produce the sharpness for text of a LCD monitor. Unless you use your display only for the big object in display such as gaming, watching video, etc. It's still recommended to get LCD monitor for text displaying purpose like viewing word, pdf, etc.

Yeah they don't do sales for LCD monitors during pc fair, only notebooks by the shops
What i meant was if you go to the dell site, u can check out the instant cash redemption description, it's rebated cos of the PC Fair week, bit funny cos u don't see them there anyway but still is good cos we get to have discount hehe
When i called up Dell the other day also, they mentioned the rebate is for the PC Fair too, guess just their campaign..

btw, I've just ordered mine, let's see when it will arrive. I already got new GC ready for to test it out too smile.gif

maybe KL is bigger so have more sales

I haven't got mine yet and never used an LCD with audio jack before. does it mean when HDMI carries thru the sound, u can plug in speaker/sound bar speakers here so the sound can come out thru it?

I just checked my order online, still in transit. ETA 26th Next Monday, hope can get even faster than that lah drool.gif

ahh icic, thx for the info
i guess this is good for those consoles or Home theatre kind of setup where sound carried thru like that, so they can jack it up to a pc/home theatre speaker

but if we compare the sound quality thru HDMI and our own PC sound card (taking eg.. a Creative X-Fi Elite pro), which is having better sound quality? my guess is still the Elite Pro in this case?

great, thx bro, that answers it all smile.gif
QUOTE(mADmAN @ Apr 19 2010, 06:05 PM)
the x-fi would be better....when using HDMI for audio to the monitor, the monitors onboard DAC (aka sound processor) will be doing the processing... and it would most likely be a cheapo DAC...as compared to the X-Fi's (most likely) better DAC.

no worries bro, good enuf for me smile.gif. Yeap i will update when i get mine later on, hyper now can't wait it arrive

This is my first monitor, and boy is it huge! Making enough room for it on the table took up much longer than setting up it in fact. But all in all, im very satisfied with it. No dead pixels at all when i checked and colours are warm, which i liked. Currently using the supplied vga cable, would certainly try out a hdmi connection whenever i get my hands on one.

My revision number is A00. Let me know yours once you get it, Shoot@M3.

ps. sorry, no time to do a review. so this is just a short impression on it.

LOL'ed at this. I also hate it when they do that puzzled look and keep thinking they're right. Plus some of them treat us as if we dunno anything. I would leave that shop too if happen like that (considered polite enuf without making much fuss) or.. if having a bad day, i'll talk to the boss on site tongue.gif

QUOTE(vearn27 @ Apr 19 2010, 10:51 PM)
I just paid a visit to LYP just now after work. Again, it has been a while since I last stepped in to a place I used to visit at least once in a week or two back in those old school days.

Many changes overall compared to the LYP back in years, I'm wondering if Sungei Wang will generating lower revenue due to LYP nowdays laugh.gif

Anyway, ends of sentimental. I just wanted to share an experience with you guys which I had just now. Almost hilarious or perhaps just too sad for it.

I walked into Dell's showroom and was browsing around. Then a sales guy approached me and I pointed at a monitor (I'm not so sure if it was ST2410, so I'm just trying to get a clarification).

Here we go...

Me: What's the model of this monitor?
Sales: *points at the Dell logo on the monitor bezel and said* It's a Dell model.
Me: Err... okay. (Hoping he got me wrong and so I ask again) I know obviously it is a Dell since this is a Dell showroom. Again, what's the model of the monitor?
Sales: *points on the description (written in wordpad) on the screen* It's a FullHD... HDMI... LCD Monitor.
Me: Okay, thanks and bye.

I doh.gif myself for wasting my time...
*
another LOL'ed. maybe new salesperson. i think we couldn't bothered to continue the conversation asking the sales person, guiding him thru the step by step process of getting the stuff online.. then at the end pointing about the delivery fees *
hahaha
QUOTE(justanime @ Apr 19 2010, 11:14 PM)
I encountered something like that before. Went into a Dell retailer store and happened to see a ST2410 on display. Asked for the price and the sales person told me it's RM750. Ok, nvm then i told him about the online pricing of RM679. He replied me saying if you order online you have to pay for the delivery, which is very expensive because the monitor is heavy.. rclxub.gif

yaya, i prefer like that too, if i see them following me, i also say 'i'm just looking around'. some of them are really nice also lah, but some also not so nice

the most common question i met is "U looking for wat?" i'd say if they change it to "is there anything i can help you with?" is much better

but then again there are those that just stands around, waiting for you to go to them and ask, and all they reply is 'pointing' to a section of the shop.. those which are lazybum! shakehead.gif

update:no news on my new ST2410 yet..

2 units! wow, yeah prefer 2 as well since most display nowadays can support that

btw, good news! I've just received mine this morning. Haven't got time check it out, only tonite can check at home. FYI, it was stated in the order status page, ETA = 26th April (that's this coming Monday) but I've received it already today rclxms.gif thumbup.gif

I've plugged in my monitor last nite paired with my HD4870
Resolution full screen plus i played the Torchlight game a while (full screen as well) i go like wow.. can see so much more! hehe

but one thing though, comparing to my previous Dell E190s i think my ST2410 not so sharp in movie or is it only me? I'm also guessing it may be the movie quality not meant for full HD cos only HDTV

Plus i sat further away now lol, otherwise need to stretch head left to right too much..

Anyway, it is a good buy for me on the ST2410

Just one other comment, I find the stand bit flimsy after i put it, maybe the screw was not really tight(talking about the screw that mounts the leg holder, not the one that u fastened the round stand to the leg). Anyone has this problem too? like can tilt left or right, which is bit sweat.gif cos may break..

Edit : another comment. while putting in my DVI cable, i find it's too near the leg so kinda hard bit to fasten as my fingers are big! not a big deal but bit fuss there, prolly they should have built/design it further away
