I personally prefer Orchid Ria, actually food is tastier and cheaper than Teo Seafood. Wonderland ( Ah Toon ) is value for money kind of place. Very popular among locals as he is a local Hainanese. Seafood is fresh but not as tasty as Orchid but he's very much cheaper. His location is nicer too just beside the sea (actually a canal but linked to the sea).

Actually I find Wonderland very expensive. The last time I was there end of last year, Wonderland seemds to be closed for the nearly one week I was there. I banned Wonderland after just one meal coz the same meal and tasting much better, I got it for about 50% of Wonderland's price at Kauboi, which is next door.

My mum wanted to try Wonderland after all the hype about it. The Tomyum soup is omg...taste like tomato soup! Trust me, Kauboi is much better. I always go there (like 3-4 times a year coz I just love that place), in fact nearly every night when I am at LGK.

I even pre-order some of the pricier seafood from KL before I go and the prices are so reasonable. The brother of the owner is a fisherman and he gets fresh seafood supply nearly every morning. On average, a meal for 4 adults with a 1kg large prawn tomyum soup, a large fish, or chien, 3 to 4 roe crabs, one vege dish, mango kerabu, sotong or lala dish and mantis prawn costs about RM120 to RM150 depending on the seasonal price of the crabs. Got rice and herbal drink also. All these used to be less than RM100 a couple of years ago but now what also increased jor.

Fresh lobster at Kauboi was RM120 for about 1kg (must pre-order) whereas this Wonderland's frozen lobster was RM150/kg! Then they didn't know how to cook lobster or was trying to cook it in a way to cover its non-freshness!

Can't wait for my coming trip! drool.gif

Everything's changed now..................sigh.
I never liked Wonderland's food but it was cheap and one thing malays eat there too as the whole cluster of eateries and the next one are all pork free as required by MDL. Kauboi's partner Ah Toong is the nephew of one of the biggest seafood supplier in Langkawi, probably that's why he is cheaper. Since Wonderland is also expensive now, they must have adopted the two tiered pricing, tourist and locals.

etigge, thanks for the additional insider info...i patron kauboi since my first trip to LGK in the 90s...his prices tho increased but still very much cheaper than many places in LGK. Food is yummy and always get one dish FOC! Wonderland sudah naik kepala after it was featured in Flavours mag's LGK food guide a couple of yers back as being a good and cheap seafood place....probably people have different tastes coz i never liked Wonderland's dishes. Mat Sallehs also like there coz a lot of ppl recommend in some overseas forum...aiseh they really dunno the real Malaysian/Thai food!

The stall in front of the masjid (last time it was opposite) on the way to Mahsuri's tomb sells yummy delicacies like kuih muih, goreng pisang (slurp!!! I normally buy RM2 to RM3 and eat all myself until sore throat! >.<) and very cheap nasi lemak bungkus biasa. It started with RM0.10 per piece, now RM1 only get you 4 pieces. Now expanded big big liao...also featured in that Flavours LGK food guide, I showed to that Makcik, she was so surprised and she wanted my copy but soli lor...my only copy and I tried to get her one after back in KL but no more. When I bought that Flavours mag, I half expected her to be in there coz goreng pisang YUMMY!

Car rental already became expensive due to the licensing. Last year I go already increased by like RM40-RM50 for the same make though off peak. Last time a lot of kereta sapu one, but now they 'legalise' most of them. Still got some sapu ones but then they make you walk far2 to get the car to avoid detection but LGK is a small place, they can detect whose car in the sapu pool and gang up to retaliate/report to JPJ as told by an ex-LGK kereta sapu guy now working in KL.

Added on April 29, 2010, 12:05 amKelvin 5717, RM60 for all the dishes you mentioned at Kauboi, dun think possible. Unless you take out the lobster. I wrote dy the lobster price ma. To be able to taste a lobster, it needs to be at least 500gm coz the shell already damn heavy liao.

For duty free, you just drive to the Pandak Mayah commercial area (directions already provided by Etigge) and stop your car near Water Garden (my everyday haunt in LGK). There are a few DFS there...Wawasan, Haji Ismail, Zeno, etc...I always walk around there to find out the best prices, sometimes buying something here and something there.

On chocolates, please take note of the expiry date as noted by another forummer....those cheaper ones will expire in 3-6 months, so dont buy so much if you can't finish.

Then on the way back to your hotel, got this Teow Soon Huat which once used to be the cheapest but not anymore. Big DFS attached to a shopping complex, can go jln2.

I liked staying at Bayview coz just walk out to those shops but coming trip was booked into Awana...super far drive out to Kuah! Those restaurants in Pantai Cenang I don't fancy much also and more expensive. Will still drive down to kauboi....I must have my 'fix' there...XD

Berjaya Langkawi

Plus points - Near to Oriental Village, Cable car and Seven wells. Within walking distance but I rather drive out if renting a car. Close to the nature, if you like it. Nice beach. Pool area has a nice environment but maintenance is a bit lacking.

Negative points - a bit of a run down, so you don't expect 5 stars tho it is rated as such in some hotel booking sites. I stayed in one unit where the air-cond broke down a few times in the day and they do not have an extra unit to change me to coz it was peak period. Calling the maintenance crew also took them quite some time to come though they came via motorbike.

Be prepared to walk for a distance and uphill from the hotel lobby as the chalets are up in the hills. If you want those closer to the main building/lobby area, you will lose the sereness/tranquility of nature. They have free buggy but then sometimes waiting for them is time for the mosquitoes to fest on you. Call them ahead from your chalet and let them know the time to pick you up. Be out there to wait for them, otherwise they will presume that you can't wait and had walked down yourself 'coz I suspect they also collect a few calls before moving coz they usually arrive with people already on baord. If sometimes you walk half way and chance upon them, you can flag them down. From the lobby, they will normally try to wait until the buggy is full before they depart. Car park is far away from lobby, about max 5 minutes walk and it is rather dark at night. So, if renting a car, you can choose to drop off your passengers at the lobby before driving back to the car park, if security is not an issue for you (it is quite safe coz Berjaya is end of the road). But don't come back too late, if peak season, you will be parked at Oriental Village coz their parking is very small and that is very far tho' at times, you might be lucky enough to see their buggy picking up people there and jump in.

Taxis (Vans in LGK) also take the opportunity to try to charge more tho the standard rates is already pre-printed in the destination/fare list. This is more prevalent during early morning or evening hours. But if you rent a car, then you won't have this problem but another new problem is driving far2 to eat at reasonable price. Food at the hotel is rather pricey.

Yo!!! I just called Teluk Yu Car Rental coz some1 mentioned Nissan March RM70 per day.

Me go trow, so peak season...RM120/day! Wesak mmg a lot of ppl one....the Thai temple there is chockful of ppl last year I went.

MyVi is RM120/day and Viva is RM100/day for peak season.

The car rental prices they will stick to the official rates during peak season...off peak can nego a bit but last year prices really cannto get ady...no matter how hard u nego coz u go another counter, they will signal each other.

Like some say earlier, if you really want cheap, they offer you those sapu ones which condition is -.-'''''''.

biggrin.gif  On the road from Kuah to Pantai Cenang, there's two road options. One is straight via Kedawang and the other coastal road via Temonyong. Near the hospital, the left turn (coastal road) on the left hand hand side there's a coastal restaurant called "Restoren Nelayan" (less than a kilometre from the junction). Their seafood is also from the fishing den there. That place is called Sungai Udang. Used to be a very popular local haunt but as tourist got to know the place, it became slightly expensive but the seafood is guaranteed fresh. Try their ikan bakar especially the pari.  thumbup.gif

In Kuah town, there a Siamese restaurant called 'Wan Thai'. Although Thai they have nice seafood too as the seafood is mostly locally caught. Try their "Kengsom Fish". The soury and hot steamfish with a charcoal stove heating the fish dish as you eat. Wan Thai is located in Pesiaran Bunga Raya, Langkawi Mall (NOT Langkawi Fair but Langkawi Mall).

The seafood restaurants along the main Pesiaran Klana Mas (little shops in two clusters) in Kuah, turn left at the first traffic light. They are all pork free as required by Majlis Daerah Langkawi and Wonderland Restaurant (check earlier threads) is one of them. In fact a lot of Wonderland's clientele is malay. tongue.gif

Etigge, that Wonderland...my last trips end of last year and which ended yesterday right...it is CLOSED. The stores next to it like GLK and Kauboi all tell me it closed for good....really ah? Wonderland clientele not Malay la...3 trips ago, I saw a lot of Mat Sallehs and Chinese going for it based on recommendations in foreign forums. I didn't even see a single Malay customer ler....
