Only hiragana and katakana, but not kanji, which are chinese characters. I am still learning kanji anytime I see a new character though. I can also speak and understand Japanese, but not good. Maybe just 4 out of 10. Still enough to get by la.

i am playing valkyrie profile 2 again but using an emulator...one of the best games ever.
really love the gameplay and graphics is superb. hope they will make a valkyrie profile 3 on next gen consoles
