What about the capital S?

I thought the CD-i came about the same way as the Playstation.....a failed partnership  hmm.gif
*
Err,I mean, the internal codename was Playstation with a small s. The final console by Sony is PlayStation with a capital S. Although I don't capitalize it all the time, it's supposed to be spelled PlayStation. Which I hate typing haha.

Oh make no mistake, the CD-i was a colossal failure. Basically both Nintendo and Philips became losers once the PlayStation (I hate this spelling!) hit the market

Today I just learned that the Japanese pronunciation of Nintendo 64 is NOT Nin-ten-do Shi-ku-su-ti-fo, but Nin-ten-do Roku-ju-yon. Since the Super Famicom was pronounced just like the English spelling, I kinda thought Nintendo 64 would be the same. Whoaaaa dudeeeee rclxub.gif

in superfamicom/snes street fighter II, the obvious sacrifice would be the background stages.

in dhalsim's stage, there's only 4 elephants as opposed to 6 in the original arcade.

in guile's stage, the crowd iinm is stationary (not moving).

in m.bison's stage (las vegas) and vega (Thailand), same issue with guile.

in sagat's stage the palm tree in foreground is also missing.

the best ports for street fighter II are in the psone/sega Saturn street fighter collection 2 and also the ps2/xbox Capcom classics collection.

oh and the psp also had their version of Capcom classics collection...
*
Ada la some things that are off. The music speed up is wrong. Background characters missing frames of animation, like the people in Ken and Zangief stage. Actually any background characters have less frames of animation. Some slight loading juuust before loading the characters' win animation. But back when "arcade perfect" wasn't possible yet, I think the Super Famicom version would be considered the best home port during the 16 bit era.

The classics collection version is emulated though, so the best port for me would be Saturn version on the SF Collection. Sharp X68000 version is something else entirely, but it doesn't count though. Tak aci since SF2 was developed on X68000.

What are the chances of getting dreamcast stuff here for games (bootleg also can) and accessory?

Fire back my ps2 (suspect lens is dead, phat ps2) and dc (still working and wanted to play some game) before i go back to work
*
Not that I'm condoning it, but it's very easy to get "backup" games for Dreamcast, since you don't even need to mod it. The Internet is your friend there.

Accesories are tougher though. In the first place Dreamcast was never as popular as PS1 or PS2. Unless you look for second hand stuff.

Any idea where to fix my ps2 lens for phat ps2? Wanted to play FM5 wich sadly my memory card lost and cant read disc.

Any recommend game to play for DC? Playing code veronica now, I do know that DC is kinda famous with fighting game (which I hardly have an arcade stick) and shump (which I sucks as well). Not forget that my controller are kinda spoilt already.

Btw is it normal for DC to have a loud disc reading sound on their console? Mine was kinda loud when loading stuff.

These are the only times where I have time for home console and wanted to play classic one (dunno why)
*
I think most console shops should be able to repair a PS2, given time. They will most likely just change the lens after all.

My favorite games on Dreamcast are always the fighting games. The only console ports of Street Fighter III, Marvel VS Capcom, and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure to retain its original frames of animation are on Dreamcast. SFIII was never ported to other consoles until Dreamcast died.

Then there are the non-traditional fighting games like Power Stone 1 & 2, Tech Romancer. The awesome Soul Calibur of course. Capcom VS SNK 1 & 2. Maybe the arena fighters like Spawn and Heavy Metal Geomatrix.

Shmups are also plentiful on Dreamcast. Gigawings, Gunbird, Ikaruga, Border Down, Under Defeat. I had a lot of good memories playing Dreamcast. But I only bought it after SEGA announced it will be exiting the console business. I was afraid I will never get the chance to own a SEGA console if I didn't act quick.

Thanks for recommendation, tbh this is the only Sega console that I owned and brought it dirt cheap back then (under rm100 without vmu) so why not? Yeah looking back on those title that you mentoned I do realized that Capcom did really pushed themselves to support Dreamcast before it dies out, too bad I dont own a stick to play fighting/practice. Which console should we compare for DC in term on hardware wise? Ps1 or Ps2? Since DC is like in between. I am just wondering why people still like Sega hardware for fighting compared to PS back then?
*
Dreamcast was part of the 6th generation of videogames consoles, same as PS2, Gamecube and Xbox. It was earlier to market by 1 year compared to PS2. And close to 2 years if you consider the original 1998 Japanese launch. Dreamcast was supposed to be SEGA's big savior. Where Saturn was a nightmare to program for, Dreamcast is very programmer friendly. Where Saturn had good 2D capabilities but poor 3D capabilities, Dreamcast was good at both. And it was a pioneer of mass market online gaming for consoles, which was an important milestone. I think SEGA was too early for their own good, when broadband Internet wasn't very common yet. It was Microsoft who improved on SEGA's online service and created XBOX Live.

As for SEGA hardware, I think it's mainly because the Saturn was the king of 2D graphics. Try comparing any of the 2D Capcom games on Saturn and Playstation. All of them were better on Saturn. And in the case of X-men VS Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter, only the Saturn version had the tag-team mechanic still intact. The Playstation version couldn't store all the character data for 4 characters onscreen. And it STILL had to drop framerates to make it semi-playable. The Dreamcast was even better. SEGA had an idea where you can carry your game progress from the arcades into your home console. Just finished a session of Marvel VS Capcom 2 at the arcade? Save your progress on a Dreamcast VMU, then import it to your Dreamcast and continue your progress. You can't get more "arcade perfect" games than on Dreamcast.

The Dreamcast hardware was actually used as the basis for the SEGA NAOMI arcade board, which was more or less a Dreamcast with more RAM. The base arcade board was upgraded for more complex games later on, like the Star Wars Episode 1 Racer or Ferrari F355 Challenge, which ran on the Hikaru board. And later on, it was revised to NAOMI 2, where it powered games like Virtua Fighter 4. Just remember, when you look at Virtua Fighter 4, at the heart of the hardware there still exists traces of the original Dreamcast.

Some time ago I was looking for a spare power board for Dreamcast online. I came across some places selling Dreamcast parts. It's still actually possible to find spare lens online. Your Dreamcast lens confirmed dead? I think I remember you asking about this before.

There are sellers on Aliexpress still selling Dreamcast lens

I'm very certain we should be able to find PS2 lens sold online. There are way too many PS2s in existence, so there must be a healthy parts surplus too.

Here are some you can find on Aliexpress

Capcom and Sega were bed buddies right?

During the Saturn era, Capcom and SNK were the only 3rd party developers I would say that knew how to get the best performance out of Saturn. You will notice that most 3D titles were better on Playstation, while most 2D titles were better on Saturn. And these 2 companies were the best makers of 2D games at that time.

And when it came time for their next arcade hardware NAOMI, SEGA really went all out to court other game developers to develop on NAOMI. Previously, it was very common for game developers to create their own arcade hardware, which was time consuming, since they need to build both the game software AND the hardware. The NAOMI board allowed game developers to have an easy to develop for platform, since NAOMI code is almost identical to Dreamcast. In the past, Capcom would always develop their own hardware in-house, like the CPS1, CPS2 and CPS3 hardware. Now that they no longer need to worry about developing new hardware, Capcom really went all out with their creativity.

In my opinion, it was during that time (1999-2001) that both SEGA and Capcom peaked in terms of creativity. Capcom alone got these games out on Dreamcast:

Street Fighter Zero 3 (CPS2 port)
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (CPS3 port)
Street Fighter III Double Impact (CPS3 port)
Street Fighter III Third Strike (CPS3 port)
Tech Romancer (System ZN2 port)
Star Gladiator Episode 2 / Plasma Sword (System ZN2 port)
Marvel VS Capcom (CPS2 port)
Marvel VS Capcom 2 (NAOMI port)
Vampire Savior for Matching Service (CPS2 port)
Super Street Fighter II X (CPS2 port)
Power Stone (NAOMI port)
Power Stone 2 (NAOMI port)
Spawn (NAOMI port)
Project Justice (NAOMI port)
Capcom VS SNK (NAOMI port)
Capcom VS SNK 2 (NAOMI port)
Cannon Spike (NAOMI port)

I've left out most of the shmups since I can't remember them. But just based on this short list, you can see how much effort Capcom put into the Dreamcast. I don't think I've seen such a great amount of output in any other time period. The Capcom of today would rather focus on Monster Hunter, Resident Evil and Street Fighter.

I can't really choose a single game from those golden years of Capcom. Most of their output were so awesome. Even their licensed games like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Punisher, Alien VS Predator were awesome. You know, unlike Acclaim.

Most of the fighting game you guys agree to get the dreamcast version better than ps2 version? Like Snk vs Capcom, kof 2000? Of course looking for 3rd strike as well, that is why I am looking for a stick as well. Still wondering how you guys convert ps1/ps2 stick to play on dc? How do you even save the game?
*
Oh actually SNK Vs Capcom never came to Dreamcast. Dreamcast was already dead by 2003. The one on Dreamcast was Capcom Vs SNK. It was a Dreamcast exclusive for a while. A PS1 port later came out, which sucked. Capcom Vs SNK 2 however came out on both PS2 and Dreamcastm, and I do prefer the Dreamcast version.

I use a PS1 to Dreamcast converter to use my arcade stick. I also have a Saturn to Dreamcast converter, for using my Virtual On twin stick. Save games? No other way, you need to have a VMU to save games on Dreamcast.

You're trying to run Japanese games using the Utopia disc? Nope that won't work. What you need is either a Gameshark CDX or a utility disc like Action Replay. Trust me, it works.

You can actually find it easily for download. Again, I'm NOT condoning this, but I myself use it purely to bypass the region lock on Dreamcast. It's a very small download anyway. PM me for details.

make your PS2 stand up on the side (90 degree)  or terbalik after closing the tray (180 degree). Last time I do this for my PS1 Phat for some problematic CD. My PS2 phat dah lama tak on smile.gif
I remembered you can use the Utopia CD to boot other region (mine was the manufactured ahem version), I think I play Sonic (US) and Shenmue (UK) on my JP dreamcast with the Utopia CD. Boot the dreamcast with the Utopia, then open tray and put in the original.

If you are trying to burn your own Utopia disc, try burning on the lowest settings 1x . Brings back memories making my own ahem ahem disc and homebrew stuffs. Do they still sell blank CDR nowadays? smile.gif
*
That's interesting. The reverse is not true though. I have 3 NTSC/U Dreamcasts, and all of them cannot run NTSC/J discs using the Utopia disc. We only use the Utopia disc as a bootloader for games that can't self boot. I primarily use Gameshark CDX if I need to boot NTSC/J discs.

Tu PAL version ke? Zaman dulu2 PAL games ran at 50Hz, NTSC at 60Hz. But the modern consoles no longer have these restrictions. So are the games also set to the old refresh rates of those days?

Hidup balik thread ni! Anyone have any recent loot to share? I'm semi-retired these days, so I don't really go all out looking for retro stuff anymore. I do still continue with my Japan adventures looking for games (sometimes), but I don't look for rare stuff too much these days. The only thing I got last year was a loose copy of TMNT the arcade game for Famicom. I also got the 'A Certain Magical Virtual On' game (とある魔術の 電脳戦機 バーチャロン) for PS4. The best thing from that trip was actually playing The House of the Dead Crimson Dawn in the arcades. Twice!

Games from the 8 bit and 16 bit era are still great, but I sure appreciate save state support in modern re-releases. My old current self is just not as responsive as I was during my youth haha.

Hey folks. Long time no see. I guess we all got busy in the last couple of years. Today I just received a package from China. It's a power board for the Sega Dreamcast. I bought it earlier in June, because I wanted to repair one of my Dreamcasts that had a blown power board. Unfortunately it seems I have misplaced it somewhere, so that's a bummer. The power board works fantastically though, so that's a relief.

Since I already had it hooked up, I might as well play some Dreamcast games again. I've forgotten how gaming was like back then. We used wired controllers and analogue AV cables, and we liked it! Funny how quality of life stuff changed us. Anyway, now I'm faced with a challenge. How to connect the Dreamcast to my current setup. I usually run all my AV devices to an AV receiver, which thankfully still has composite video input. Unfortunately I can no longer look at the composite video output without being repelled by the blurriness. Out of curiosity, has anyone tried one of those HDMI adapters for Dreamcast? Something like this?

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/40011659099...3c00uMKN0u&mp=1

For Xbox and PS2, I can at least run them with component video, then get audio via optical out. But for Dreamcast I don't have anything better at the moment. This seems like a practical solution for me. But I'm just wondering how does it compare to a Dreamcast VGA box? I do have one, but I thought it would be cleaner to just connect HDMI directly from Dreamcast to the receiver, instead of doing Dreamcast>VGA box>HDMI converter>HDMI cable>AV receiver. Thoughts and opinions are welcome.

Thanks for the write up! I read bit about that Pound HD Link, and yeah, quality wise it's not that great. But it is very easy to use, so that's one thing it has. That DC Digital thing looks highly impressive. I wasn't aware there were such things for Dreamcast. Back then VGA was the way to go for Dreamcast gaming. I actually tried to get a VGA + RCA to HDMI adapter, which I then setup like this:

Dreamcast - VGA box - VGA to HDMI adapter - 4K TV

It was not satisfactory at all. Running it this way, I experienced significant lag while playing games. Not to mention the constant buzzing sound I can hear coming out from my speakers. I guess the solution was sort of a Frankenstein's monster, and it looked ugly too. I'll take a look into the Akura box more in depth.

It felt like just a short while ago that I was using S-Video and component output to get the "best" video output. Now most TVs or AV receivers don't even have those. I've been meaning to get a Frame Meister or OSSC for a while, but haven't really taken the plunge. Btw what do you think of these two?
