I think most console shops should be able to repair a PS2, given time. They will most likely just change the lens after all.

My favorite games on Dreamcast are always the fighting games. The only console ports of Street Fighter III, Marvel VS Capcom, and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure to retain its original frames of animation are on Dreamcast. SFIII was never ported to other consoles until Dreamcast died.

Then there are the non-traditional fighting games like Power Stone 1 & 2, Tech Romancer. The awesome Soul Calibur of course. Capcom VS SNK 1 & 2. Maybe the arena fighters like Spawn and Heavy Metal Geomatrix.

Shmups are also plentiful on Dreamcast. Gigawings, Gunbird, Ikaruga, Border Down, Under Defeat. I had a lot of good memories playing Dreamcast. But I only bought it after SEGA announced it will be exiting the console business. I was afraid I will never get the chance to own a SEGA console if I didn't act quick.

During the Saturn era, Capcom and SNK were the only 3rd party developers I would say that knew how to get the best performance out of Saturn. You will notice that most 3D titles were better on Playstation, while most 2D titles were better on Saturn. And these 2 companies were the best makers of 2D games at that time.

And when it came time for their next arcade hardware NAOMI, SEGA really went all out to court other game developers to develop on NAOMI. Previously, it was very common for game developers to create their own arcade hardware, which was time consuming, since they need to build both the game software AND the hardware. The NAOMI board allowed game developers to have an easy to develop for platform, since NAOMI code is almost identical to Dreamcast. In the past, Capcom would always develop their own hardware in-house, like the CPS1, CPS2 and CPS3 hardware. Now that they no longer need to worry about developing new hardware, Capcom really went all out with their creativity.

In my opinion, it was during that time (1999-2001) that both SEGA and Capcom peaked in terms of creativity. Capcom alone got these games out on Dreamcast:

Street Fighter Zero 3 (CPS2 port)
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (CPS3 port)
Street Fighter III Double Impact (CPS3 port)
Street Fighter III Third Strike (CPS3 port)
Tech Romancer (System ZN2 port)
Star Gladiator Episode 2 / Plasma Sword (System ZN2 port)
Marvel VS Capcom (CPS2 port)
Marvel VS Capcom 2 (NAOMI port)
Vampire Savior for Matching Service (CPS2 port)
Super Street Fighter II X (CPS2 port)
Power Stone (NAOMI port)
Power Stone 2 (NAOMI port)
Spawn (NAOMI port)
Project Justice (NAOMI port)
Capcom VS SNK (NAOMI port)
Capcom VS SNK 2 (NAOMI port)
Cannon Spike (NAOMI port)

I've left out most of the shmups since I can't remember them. But just based on this short list, you can see how much effort Capcom put into the Dreamcast. I don't think I've seen such a great amount of output in any other time period. The Capcom of today would rather focus on Monster Hunter, Resident Evil and Street Fighter.

I can't really choose a single game from those golden years of Capcom. Most of their output were so awesome. Even their licensed games like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Punisher, Alien VS Predator were awesome. You know, unlike Acclaim.

Most of the fighting game you guys agree to get the dreamcast version better than ps2 version? Like Snk vs Capcom, kof 2000? Of course looking for 3rd strike as well, that is why I am looking for a stick as well. Still wondering how you guys convert ps1/ps2 stick to play on dc? How do you even save the game?

Btw anyone have front mission 5 and lament of innocent? I miss those game that I wanted to play now? Damn all those classics.

Oh actually SNK Vs Capcom never came to Dreamcast. Dreamcast was already dead by 2003. The one on Dreamcast was Capcom Vs SNK. It was a Dreamcast exclusive for a while. A PS1 port later came out, which sucked. Capcom Vs SNK 2 however came out on both PS2 and Dreamcastm, and I do prefer the Dreamcast version.

I use a PS1 to Dreamcast converter to use my arcade stick. I also have a Saturn to Dreamcast converter, for using my Virtual On twin stick. Save games? No other way, you need to have a VMU to save games on Dreamcast.

You're trying to run Japanese games using the Utopia disc? Nope that won't work. What you need is either a Gameshark CDX or a utility disc like Action Replay. Trust me, it works.

You can actually find it easily for download. Again, I'm NOT condoning this, but I myself use it purely to bypass the region lock on Dreamcast. It's a very small download anyway. PM me for details.

Dreamcast was part of the 6th generation of videogames consoles, same as PS2, Gamecube and Xbox. It was earlier to market by 1 year compared to PS2. And close to 2 years if you consider the original 1998 Japanese launch. Dreamcast was supposed to be SEGA's big savior. Where Saturn was a nightmare to program for, Dreamcast is very programmer friendly. Where Saturn had good 2D capabilities but poor 3D capabilities, Dreamcast was good at both. And it was a pioneer of mass market online gaming for consoles, which was an important milestone. I think SEGA was too early for their own good, when broadband Internet wasn't very common yet. It was Microsoft who improved on SEGA's online service and created XBOX Live.

As for SEGA hardware, I think it's mainly because the Saturn was the king of 2D graphics. Try comparing any of the 2D Capcom games on Saturn and Playstation. All of them were better on Saturn. And in the case of X-men VS Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter, only the Saturn version had the tag-team mechanic still intact. The Playstation version couldn't store all the character data for 4 characters onscreen. And it STILL had to drop framerates to make it semi-playable. The Dreamcast was even better. SEGA had an idea where you can carry your game progress from the arcades into your home console. Just finished a session of Marvel VS Capcom 2 at the arcade? Save your progress on a Dreamcast VMU, then import it to your Dreamcast and continue your progress. You can't get more "arcade perfect" games than on Dreamcast.

The Dreamcast hardware was actually used as the basis for the SEGA NAOMI arcade board, which was more or less a Dreamcast with more RAM. The base arcade board was upgraded for more complex games later on, like the Star Wars Episode 1 Racer or Ferrari F355 Challenge, which ran on the Hikaru board. And later on, it was revised to NAOMI 2, where it powered games like Virtua Fighter 4. Just remember, when you look at Virtua Fighter 4, at the heart of the hardware there still exists traces of the original Dreamcast.

no wonder andrewcha pm me, why u no invite me in this discussion?

anyway another reaon why dreamcast was easy to program was bcos it has a windows-based development kit!

that's why there's a 'powered by windows ce' logo in the front.

so if your software guys aren't comfortable with sega's in house dev. kits, you can get microsoft's!

and yes, that's why the xbox was touted as dreamcast 2 bcos sega really helped Microsoft when they designed the xbox.

as for marvel vs. Capcom, that vmu-sharing idea was the main reason to unlock the entire roster (in the arcades only 32 characters were available initially and in the home version, only 16 chars!

so the more you play (both on DC and arcades) the more characters are unlocked.

otherwise the chars will only slowly unlock by itself over the duration of 2 years!

then some guy from gamefaqs found a way to hack the vmu data and unlock the entire roster by changing the binary code inside the vmu!

on the ps2 versionof MvC2, you need to play online a lot to unlock the entire roster. in fact I had to use the AR Max tool to unlock the entire roster...

bcos the get online that time you need to use the USB modem (the network adapter was not released yet...)

btw I got the MvC2 with modem pack here:

Capcom are bset buddies with every console maker.

they released games for NEC PC engine and sega megadrive even when they are not 'official' 3rd party software...

they released super turbo on 3DO as an exclusive.

they release all of their best fighters on sega consoles no matter if that console is no. 1 or no. 3 in the console war.

they become best buddies with Nintendo during gamecube era bcos wanna repay back Nintendo for helping them during famicom generation (at one point all resident evil games came out on gamecube 1st).

they are friends with Microsoft bcos Microsoft give them incentive to use Microsoft-based tools to make games like dead rising and lost planet.

now they are best buddies with sony bcos sony pay for resident evil movies and also street fighter V.

this!

too bad that the licenses for Cadillac's and dinosaurs and aliens vs predator were for arcade only and not home...

that aliens vs predator game was based on that infamous leaked script of aliens vs. predator (which was totally different than the one that was eventually made in 2004)....

the only thing remained was the female lead (changed from Japanese-American girl to black-American) and no dutch (although I read somewhere that dutch will return in the new predator reboot movie coming out in 2018 or so).
