The PC version of street fighter 2 - the 8 characters version ? Didn't know they release that but I remember the craze back then and some of the ports were not official ports.

There was an official super sf 2 X (with the super bar) which I had at the time in a few floppies and my 486 DX2 was struggling to load, took like 2 to 3 seconds lag for the fireball animation to finish.
*
There were quite a few versions of SF2 between 1993-1995. There was one called SF IBM, which was the version I played. There were also rumors of a "Champion Edition" in 1993, which I never saw, simply because the HDD space required was 20MB. My PC had an incredibly low 40MB size back then haha.

And there was another one called SF Liu, which more or less had all the characters EXCEPT Vega, which had been replaced with Andy Bogard for some reason. SF Liu was a "port" of Hyper Fighting, where some stuff like Guile's Roundhouse flash kick hitting twice, and Dhalsim had his teleport. Even the character portraits used the colors for Hyper Fighting.

There was an OFFICIAL version of SF2 The World Warrior for PC, and it SUCKED. Capcom gave the license to US Gold, who really did a half-assed job. The classic SF2 music was replaced with a terrifying new soundtrack, which simply looped all the time. Instead of 6 buttons, there was only 1 punch button and 1 kick button. You had to hit punch + a direction to trigger stronger attacks. For example, hit the Punch button to get Jab, hit Punch + Back to get Strong, and hit Punch + Up to get Fierce. And all special moves used the Strong version only. Now, I could forgive the game if this was the only problem, but even the gameplay sucked! It only looked like SF2, but plays nothing like it. Characters soared in the air when jumping, the "physics" of SF2 was gone, and the combo system didn't work.

But when it was time to port Super Street Fighter II Turbo, all the previous issues with SF2 The World Warrior was forgiven. Ported by Gametek in 1995, this was the version you played. Did you know there were only 2 versions of SSF2T released initially? One for the 3DO, and one for PC-DOS. Wait, didn't SSF2T REQUIRE a 486DX2/66 to run? I was chugging along with my 363SX/33, and mine was even worse. I could see every single frame of animation lol. At that time I didn't even know the game had super moves, until I accidentally did Ryu's Shinkuu Hadouken while trying to execute a Shoryuken. See, because SF2 had strict input timing, and because my stupid PC was damn slow, I can't execute special moves in a smooth motion, otherwise it will not register. Instead of doing Down, Down-Forward,Forward + Punch, mine was Down, half second pause, Down-Forward, half-second pause, Forward, half-second pause, Punch. So, while trying to do a Shoryuken (Forward,Down,Down-Forward+Punch), I must have entered the Hadouken motion twice instead. From then on, I started looking into the other character's Super moves.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the worst version of SF2, possibly ever. Even the Micro Genius unofficial version was better. Watch it and know true sadness.

Champions edition also released at megadrive while SNES got the SFII Turbo.then came out SSFII for both md and snes.
The best SFII for me were pc engine edition
*
About that, from what I understand, Nintendo made a deal with Capcom to keep SF2 off the Megadrive (kinda like the Street Fighter V situation with Sony). Which was true for a while. Then, when it was time to release Champion Edition, Capcom renamed the game to Street Fighter II Special Championship Edition when bringing it to the Megadrive. Since it was no longer called "Street Fighter II", they were able to use a loophole and bring it to the Megadrive.

Nintendo wasn't too happy about that, which is where Hyper Fighting came in. It was supposed to be a better version of SF2 than the one Sega got. Little that Nintendo know, there is an option in the Sega version that switches it between normal and Hyper Fighting. So technically, both consoles got Hyper Fighting. That stupid exclusitivity cause was no longer in place when Super Street Fighter II came out, so both versions were the same. Well, not really the same, since the SNES version looked and sounded better.

Personally for me though, the best version of SF2 was for the Sharp X68000, which is kinda cheating, as the CPS1 engine was written on the X68000. I only got to try it in this modern era, using an X68000 emulator. Holy crap, it's a perfect version of SF2 running on a home system. I can't even call it a port, as it was running natively on the same hardware as the arcade version.

For me,the best 2d fighting games console were AES and Saturn comes closed dreamcast.these port were arcade perfect espcially saturn with ram cart.so unfortunate sega killed it for the DC.
*
AES too expensive for me though. Saturn and Dreamcast were in fact home to the finest fighting games. Sega should have shown own off how the Capcom fighting games like X-men Vs Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter and Vampire Savior were better than the PlayStation versions, and used them as selling points. But no thanks to Bernie Stolar, who declared the future of the company is not in the Saturn, it effectively killed the Saturn (in the west). So many games that never saw a western release...

Funny bsck in my school day my friend was playing the MvC on PS1 and it is only fixed for 1 character. I thought is was a norm. Until I found out about the arcade version and Saturn version. Fuh. Kena conned
*
In Japan at least, Capcom was more forthcoming that the Playstation version was gimped. The original title for the NTSC/J release of X-men VS Street Fighter was X-men VS Street Fighter EX Edition, to signify the loss of tag battle. The second character was used only during team up hyper combo. For the release of Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter, they managed to get tag battle working, but ONLY with the same characters, like four Spider-man onscreen. This showed the RAM limitation of the Playstation, since it couldn't load all four character data, as well as other stuff like background data, sounds and animations.

I'm slowly trying to collect all of Capcom's 4MB Saturn games. Last year I finally found Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter and Dungeons & Dragons Collection. Now I just need to look for Street Fighter Zero 3.

Good for you. Seriously all those newer FTG didnt really get me interested. Still prefer the old FTG game. Gone of those days of KOF (look at the newer one I really wanted to puke) and SF (still like Alpha 3 the best, didnt have a chance to play SF3) and those more challenging one (for me la like those SvC)

Maybe Im suck at FTG
*
Yeah I'm also more in favor of fighting games from the 90s. But the modern games aren't too bad. I love Blazblue, Guilty Gear Xrd, Street Fighter IV and V, even Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat X. King of Fighters XIV looks like ass though. What the hell happened to them? I really liked some of their older stuff like Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, Last Blade. Now they can't do anything right in the 3D era. The game might play well, but those graphics...

Blame SNK thats been taken over by Playmore. Ever since kof 2000 and above, it went downhill. Storyline no more. K dash suddenly like god, later got those new boss. I am into kof back then due to storyline like alpha 3
*
I'm more of a Capcom guy, but I also like the little touches in SNK games that make it more fleshed out. Rivalries, character story, hidden bosses. They had these since way back then. Like how in Fatal Fury 2, the matches are televised, and you can see the patrons are watching from Pao Pao Cafe, with Richard as the bartender. Each character has a pre-fight and post-fight quote, even for the mirror matches. Some of these I still remember. Big Bear: "Start at once. You're finished". Joe Higashi: "Hee hee here comes the stormy man".

And the concept of rival matches was introduced probably in Fatal Fury 3, where you have character specific dialogues or animations. Like when you defeated Mai using Terry, the next match would be against Andy, who will say something like "You hairspray hooligan bla bla bla", and you can see Mai crying in the background.

So yeah, I also played SNK games for the story. Something that Street Fighter was not that strong at, until the Zero/Alpha series and SFIII.

Nope. I still live with my family, and they don't like me having my stuff all around the house. So most of the time they're kept away, unless I want to test out or play something. At most I just have 2 consoles hooked up to the TV. These 2 years was a bit different. 360 and PS3 hooked up to living room TV, Xbox One hooked up to my 24" monitor upstairs, where I have my racing wheel.

Tekki/Steel Battalion! I saw a shop in Plaza Singapura that had it on display, but they weren't selling it. That one was for personal collection only. I reaaaaally want that if I can find it for sale.

You know your street fighter PC history more than me smile.gif

I think 486DX4 was the minimum for SSF2T but I didn't mess around with it once I upgraded to Pentium 133 around the end of 1995 / 1996 ? as I dont have the 5 1/4 floppy drive. Can't remember where I got SSF2T in 5 1/4 as I didn't recall buying it or copying it from shops. Started buying PC games via 3 1/2 floppy at the ground floor Imbi plaza or was it SG wang - memory abit fuzzy now, the small shop was in a corner.
*
Haha yeah I was kind obsessed with SF2. I consumed anything SF2 related. Chinese comics (although I can't read it), game guides, sticker books, you name it. Even knockoff games like Super Fighter was an acceptable substitute for SF2. I kinda got a reputation as a Street Fighter expert in my school. Not playing it mind you, but things like SF history and lore. Yes, I was a nerd. Still am actually biggrin.gif

QUOTE(snipersnake @ Mar 11 2016, 03:42 PM)
yeah, remembered that. i read somewhere it was due to the limitatins of the hardware.

Both Saturn and Playstation had only 2MB RAM, but the Saturn can use the 1MB or 4MB RAM expansion cartridge to give it a memory boost. That, and the Saturn was originally pushed as the ultimate 2D console, so it handles most 2D games better than the Playstation. Too bad the industry was shifting towards 3D, so the Playstation and N64 were favored over Saturn. Still, as an arcade player, I loved that the Saturn had ports of the Model1/Model2 games. Seeing Virtua Fighter 1 and Virtua Fighter 2 running smoothly on the Saturn was a genuinely mindblowing experience for me. Never mind that the initial release of VF1 was broken.

SFIBM lives on in Youtube! But this looks like an updated version based on SSF2. The one I played was based on The World Warrior.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQZD3SDZGxM

And this is SFLIU. This looks like the exact one I played. I think. I didn't watch the whole video, so I don't know whether they have Vega or Andy Bogard.

back then was too naive to know what is real and what is cetak rompak i remember i had so many sf2 in my pc.
there was one which basically had two characters which is ryu and chunli only.
i remember the hyper fighting version at the arcade was crazy especially vega and zangief moves the more levels you go "up" when you catch the opponent the more levels you go "down" the more damage.
*
Ryu and Chun Li? Never seen that one before. The one I know was the "demo" version of SFIBM, with only Ryu and Guile. It was even covered by Star In-tech (remember this?) back in 1993.

Oh yeah, you're referring to the "Rainbow Edition". A hacked Taiwan version of the game where you change characters at any time by hitting Start. And some special moves had crazy attributes, like the Jab Shoryuken causing 5 homing Hadoukens to chase after your opponent. Or Zangief's Lariat no longer vulnerable to crouching attacks because there is now a Yoga Flame coming out from his legs. And you can continue to go up multiple "floors", appearing from the bottom of the stage.

Back in 1998 I had a serious case of envy for the Playstation. One after another, the exclusives just taunted me to get one. Parasite Eve, Xenogears, Tekken 3, Street Fighter Zero 3, and later on, Metal Gear Solid. And let's not forget the back catalog of older games. Anyway, I remember the prices for original Playstation games were crazy expensive. Tekken 3 and Street Fighter Zero 3 RM250 each? No wonder I went full pirate mode. Later during the PS2 and Xbox era, we started getting games from Singapore, which lessened the wallet shock. Today I no longer pirate anything, as I want the industry to remain healthy. No use whining why X game no longer exist if I didn't support them.
