You can't upgrade the firmware like installing a new Linux distro. We will need to wait for SE to release a new ROM update or wait for some leaked ROMs. Then ROM cookers will work on it to port it over into X10 and give you custom ROM. That alone will depend on the popularity of the device. Nexus One is very popular so naturally there will a lot of custom ROMs targeted to it. The Android scene is pretty fragmented now. We see so many version builds of Android (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1) and yet not all of the devices have the latest build. Most of them are stuck at 1.6 which is a pity. Upgrades are slow and we don't know who will deliver them. The manufacturer or Google? Some phones are marked 'with Google' while some phones are customized like HTC Sense. Some have market, some don't have.
In the case of X10, most probably updates will come from SE. Judging by SE's responsiveness over the past, firmware update is gonna be slow. So yes, the X10 like any other Android phones can be upgrade. The question is when and whether there will be an update.
