my center satelite has improved with large setting, why not just give it a try.

-30db is the the master volume. pioneer using "negative db" as measurement, rite?
take a look at the channel boost u set as below:

master volume: -41db or -45db
Front L R: +9db
Center: +7db
Surround L R: +10db
Subwoofer: +9db or +10db

front LR is actually -41+9 = -32db
same goes to center -41+7 = -34db
S.LR actual -31db
sub actual -31db

you already boosting all speaker up +9db but turn down master volume rclxub.gif when play any louder speaker will start distort (pecah)
i would suggest you to turn up master volume about -35db, drop the boost level back between 0, +1, +2, +3db range

its ok to tune by ear, because MCACC also cannot get 100% accurate data tongue.gif
got set distance already? subwoofer one is quite tricky

no wonder sweat.gif

QUOTE(scmah73 @ Jun 12 2014, 10:08 AM)
yea the min volume i can go down just until 0
but as bro ktek suggest now i drop the boost level back to low and turn up master volume when watch movie, tv, for distance i let it default as 30m.
Front L R: +2db
Center: +3db
Surround L R: +2db
Subwoofer: +5db
*

sorry, i confused liao. becos the other day i see was different pioneer avr

LFE is subwoofer signal. ATT is attenuation, means reduce the bass when watching movie with 5.1 surround.
it wont affect stereo operation.

30M very big room! haha, spend some time to measure your distance, it will improve the front to back coverage

Hi all,
I got problem with my Pioneer VSX 821K.
Did the speaker set up manually..and i gave sound from amp.
Tried with blu ray disc no sound..
i,m using pioneer bdp 160 as a source. When i connected hdmi cable directly to tv..ok there was asound from movie.
then when i hooked up hdmi cable from blu ray player to amp bd input...no sound at all
previously using cheap yamaha amp..no problem..
i'm not sure ..whetehr the setting or the internal/hardware problem with amp.
my hdmi cable connection is...bu ray player to av reciever bd input and from av reciever out put direct to tv.
need suggestion and comment from dear friends
*

1. i assume you already select BD input. see if the correct channel, or dolby dts light up.
2. redo hdmi setup from bdp. might miss a thing there
3. final guess would be cinavia protection, got use ori bd?

sonerin for movies which one is more suitable? honestly how much one shall spend to get a decent set? goes to different shop get a lot different answers. some even just ask me to get two floor stander and avr, then buy the rest when got budget....
*
bring ur own disc or thumb drive to shop, request for demo is the best way.
pioneer vsx is more suitable for pure movie when u compare to yamaha rxv, a all rounder with "not bad" musical & sound stage dsp. Specifically the cinematic voice tone, yamaha will never give "right" feeling.

avr has plenty of function even below 2k can fullfil a beginner with network music stream, tablet control.

so, pls tell ur room dimension, how many spkr u planned to install, how many player, budget in mind (will determine for future proof upgrade)?

dolby atmos, auro3d and dts:x are comming. Get ready to drill ur ceiling?

ic, probably i will set around rm3.5-4k. wouldn't mind if starts with 2 floor standing system first. i am seeing like 323k + 5.1 speaker is around 2.9k. while similar from yamaha minus the sub  477k/577k with spk160 sets.
*
got 2 methods to play around. see which one suits you better.

1. want to become serious ht audio enthusiast:
spend all ur budget to buy 2 channel floor standing, good avr, some cables.
slowly adjust until perfect, then only install rear surround and subwoofer. very time consuming but u get to become expert after some years...

2. want experience surround effect first, for leisure:
because u dunno what sound is ngam taste

buy 323k (i suggest u change this to 7.1 receiver) and 5.1 package for 2.9k ++
watch movie and listen to the good & bad side of this set. later u got own choice to add floor stander to setup 7.1 surround.

i went thru 2nd method and no regrets.

Hi, anyone has tested the Dolby Atmos? I'm planning to get Pioneer SC-LX58 which is the least expensive AV receiver with Dolby Atmos. Btw, I saw a lot of receiver with 11 channels speakers connectors behind the receiver, but it still called it 9.2 rather then 11.2, actually what is the criteria they used for 11.2 AV receiver?
*
because it only 9x amplifier inside, give 2x pre out to be use with external amp.
so u can count as 11 channel processing, 9 speaker amp

U can try bi wire or bi amp if vsx822 support it.

but at least replace the original link to a short wire. That will improve a lot

Yeah this really a good stuff!
Im also looking for china brand cable as a cheaper alternate choice with better performance vs price ratio.
Anyway,i found the tannoy a bit on bright sidewhen listening music and feel not so comfortable especially listening female voice on higher volume, -30db and above.
Does this cable able to improve the sound signture by bring it back to warmer side?becoz as i know cable also has different sound signature right?
*
Tannoy DC6TSE is very beautiful speaker thumbup.gif
u can try using chanhin cross style (x pattern) method to connect the speaker rear terminal. it helps to balance the energy between tweeter and main cone.

user posted image

do try red wire to HF, black wire to LF. then switch become red to LF, black to HF.
i prefer the latter connection immediately after audition.

if u can spend for extra cable, go for passive bi amp also fun smile.gif

Bro does it means i should find those cables with solid copper core if i wan the sound signature turn warmer?
Can recommend me few choices so that i can do study on it?
Thanks ktek, im still figuring out what and how to work with the bi-wiring and bi-amp concept. If not mistaken since im using the same receiver and can use the rear surround output to create the passive bi-amp condition right?
monoprice not bad as i always been recommend this name related to audio cables. biggrin.gif
but seems if bought from US like amazon hav to wait till the good buy season like black friday...hehe

I would like to give a try on china brands if its really realible. poor man can just slowly upgrade...hehe
*
example is audioquest cables, most are solid core inside.

yup, u can assign unused rear surround channel become bi-amp.it is most noticeable when running front as large or disable crossover. the bass response no longer weak, unlike before using any pattern of normal connection, biwire, jumper link etc..

Why is it that Pioneer receivers are so light weighted? I was looking at the VSX-824 and was surprised when I could lift it effortlessly when I do the same with my ancient Yamaha Rx, it weights like a ton.

I tried the same with newer Yamaha, Marantz and Onkyo amps and they are hefty compare to the Pioneer. Is it some kind of new technology that they are using?

It's possible I pickup a dummy model?  laugh.gif
I just checked the specs - both around 8kg
*
weight come from cooling heat sink and power transformer.

agree with dirtrun sifu. it happened to me before, buy the best front speaker u can afford instead of aftering beginner type 5.1
dont be surprised that 2 channel already enough to playback relistic records to feed human 2 ears

to answer ur question, yup floor stander can be used in front or side. usually ppl install front becos it has bigger cone that produce wide range frequency & require shorter cable (minimize power loss)

this is not assemble pc, everybody run 2 wire system so no compatible issue.
i have mix brand and size setup. avr with audyssey calibration will handle them. but personally think the same cone size is important than brands to create seemsless sound field stage

Yeah I was leaning towards that also after thinking so much. So with that said, recommendations on very good fronts?

From what I've read and studied, these are the the ones that I have shortlisted:

1. X-LS Encore
2. Q Acoustics Q3020
3. Wharfedale diamond 220 (dunno where to get though)
4. Edifier maybe?

What is cone size? sorry newbie on the terms

refer to main woofer unit

Hi so I got myself a vsx-823 receiver. I am having trouble setting it up. Some of the trouble:

1. The audio not syncing with video. This is most apparent on Fox HD Movie channel. But other channels sync well. HBO n Fox HD along with some movies from my laptop doesnt sync well.
2. How do I check what type of audio my receiver is receiving. Is it stereo, dts, dolby digital,5.1etc. All it shows in the display is the type of audio decoding I have on, n the volume. Cause I want to check if 5.1 is passthroughed to my receiver.

3. Which audio decoding mode do u guys use? Pure stream? Or auto? Any recommendations?

Thanks a lot...new to all this
*
1. usually is hdmi and fps setting. troubleshoot from there.
2. display or status button on remote
3. auto is good given im alone at best listening position & have good result after calibrate.
if want simulated surround for several seats, use dolby prologic music or dts neo music
