Hi,

I'm wondering if I need extra protection or other accessories if I'm planning to bring a local DSLR set to winter conditions at 0 Celsius?

Please advise.

Thanks

You must keep your lithium-ion batteries warm when not in use.
Subjecting your lithium-ion batteries to extreme cold weather will cause your battery power to drop drastically.

like our body.. we generate heat so we dont get freezed..
the battery, whenever cold (minus 0 temp) can self discharge (i dunno why/how in terms of it mechanically)

put ur camera in ur jacket.. close to ur body..
gantung di leher saja baru zip on the jacket.. this will REDUCE (not stop) the battery from self discharging

even eneloop batteries suffers from this.. yang tidak macam ni cuma bateri kereta saja kot LOL icon_idea.gif

low temp actually the batt are better at storing charge not self discharge la
it's too cold for the chemicals inside the batteries to react and produce charge, that's why you cant get it much power out from it

car batteries run on sulfuric acid..when temp drop below 0 deg....the water freeze la..how to have charge?

Rebet XTi aka 450D, not much additional accesories besides Batt grip, i guess u probably need to get a battery grip for ur body in order to make ur battery last longer.... cant recall how many pics i took but with the battery grip, it last me for like 3 months after the next charge during winter, 20-30 shots once a week at least.

looks nice eh? but that comes with price. Those lake were frozen, i remembered it was very cold that time and i forgot to bring my glove when i took those pictures. if i'm not mistaken it was -5c with windchill, my fingers were so cold and pain (fingers are the slimmest part among the whole body and 'no' fat to support), for the first time i felt myself why am i torture myself for taking picture. sweat.gif So remember to wear glove to take pictures during winter.

Then you must've been very lucky because generally the lithium-ions would discharge itself in sub-zero temps.

I've shot my DSLR at -16C to -2C in winter and have had no problems other than frozen fingers as DSLRs aren't glove friendly.

Went out and took photos in a snow-shower too(not something I'd recommend unless you're in the backyard)

Too many people worry too much about the equipment. Just enjoy the camera, it's meant to be used, not treated like a baby. In extreme weather, u should be more worried about your own body than the camera equipment. laugh.gif

Better chance of getting frostbite/chilblains than fusing your own tongue to the body. They're all mostly made of GFRP anyway, not many metallic surfaces to worry about.

I thought lithium ion batteries are fine in 0 deg? even laptop lithium ion are encouraged to be stored in the fridge when not in use to prevent degradation...

that is for storing la. not for using!
at that low temperatures, the chemical have a hard time reacting so it's good for storage but when in use will keep saying low battery!

Cold temperature will make the battery life per cycle shorter.

Someone mentioned here that you should worry about your fingers. Very true as those normal thick gloves are no help in handling the DSLR. If you can, try getting those glove that makes your fingertip sticks out (if you can stand the cold that is). Don't worry about your camera, it will be alright in those extreme temperature. Bring extra batteries though.

agreed on the gloves, dont get the thick cotton ones

If you go to that country, they have more choices, cheaper and better gloves than those you can get in Malaysia (i.e. wintertime, travelshops etc)

Go to the country, go and look for gloves that are a bit leather in material outside, those that you can get a good grip. if the material is thin, its OK, just make sure on the inside, you got some short fur/wool/canvas type of cloth or whatever they use to keep your hands warm

Those for me are the best
