Thanks for this amazing post - I registered to this forum specially, just so that I could thank you!!!
I used this guide to root my new HTC Hero.

A few of things I thought I should add:
1) The command:
CODE
adb shell reboot bootloader

would reboot my phone and bring up a menu, with which I wasn't able to do much and the Command Prompt would say No Device Found...
2) To solve the above I used FlashRec to flash the Recovery image
3) The "63.18.55.06FU_6.35.07.08.zip" file had some additional OSX files in the archive, which caused package verification to fail when installing - once removed using WinRAR it worked fine
4) Once this was working, I upgraded to the 2.9 Modaco ROM by downloading the ROM and Radio file from Modaco - I installed the ROM first, then the radio
5) The 2.9 ROM came with 1.8 Teknologist kernel, is this as good as the 1.7 one mentioned in this topic? Or should I downgrade?

Once again, thanks for the instructions to rooting my Hero. I really wanted to install apps to my 8GB Class 6 MicroSD instead of phone memory.

Now I'm having a look at the SDK and might try to learn how to code my own apps!

Sounds really good reading about the 3.0 update!
I'm in the process of upgrading it now, can't wait til it's done!

This guide is just awesome shahz!

Two weeks ago I was a complete newbie, now I've got a rooted HTC Hero with an 8GB Class6 MicroSD card partitioned to FAT32 and ext4, running custom ROM and a teknologist kernel with ramzswap and compcache, currently in the process of being flashed to an updated radio and custom firmware AND the most important thing....I now know what all that MEANS!!!

What should the normal available memory be (RAM)?

Mine shows as 33MB in Advanced Task Manager - I'm running a few widgets, but not many and no other apps.

Sometimes my phone still lags a bit too.

Any ideas?

I use the Mail application with around 5 email accounts, which I guess could be taking up a large amount of memory.

3.0. I tried killing the Browser and Wireless tethering and I get around 57M now.

I tried removing the Messages/Mail widgets and now it's on 60MB.

In terms of storage memory there's 58MB available, and a lot more on my SD card

I thought to start with a blog, and create a forum later if the site kicks-off. I'm open to opinions though. Sent you a PM!
