First-person shooter (FPS) used to be my favorite genre. Back in those days I could play Medal of Honor, Half-life etc all day long till my mom shout at me to turn off my PC and go to bed. However, during form 4 and 5 I had to stay in hostel so I got only little to none time for gaming. Plus, I had to concentrate for my SPM so I decided to quit gaming for 2 years.

During my rookie year in Uni I wanted to redeem what I've been missing. At that time Half-Life 2 was teh uber cool so I installed it on my PC. 10 friggin' minutes into the action, I started to feel some kind of nausea crap, felt like vomiting sad.gif

I thought it was temporary only, so the next day I tried to play again but the same thing happened. Until now I still can't play FPS resorting me to switch to platform/action adventure as my favorite sh!t.

Did anyone of you have ever experienced this situation? I'm 21 BTW

p/s I did try playing FPS on PS2 and all seems fine. No pening2 lalat no feeling like vomiting whatsoevah. Just PC. As we all know FPS on PC>>>>>>>console sad.gif

PC sometimes more movement, so easier to get nauseas.

Also, the viewing distance can affect you whether or not you have perfect vision smile.gif

I see, thanks. But but I don't have this problem when I was a kid. Is it because I'm getting old? Does any of you old timers/veterans have this sort of problem? or did I overuse my brain during SPM era lulz

QUOTE
Motion sickness caused by video games, sometimes called simulator sickness, is caused when there is a disconnect between what your eyes are seeing and what your body is feeling. The most common theory for the cause of simulation sickness is that the illusion of motion created by the virtual world, combined with the absence of motion detected by the inner ear, causes the area postrema in the brain to infer that one is hallucinating and further conclude that the hallucination is due to poison ingestion. The brain responds by inducing nausea and mass vomiting, to clear the supposed toxin. Obviously, not all games cause motion sickness, but what is it about certain games that do cause it? Basically, it all comes down to camera movement and having something to focus your eyes on. Third and first-person-shooters are some of the biggest offenders when it comes to causing motion sickness, since the camera isn’t reacting and moving the way your head thinks it should, making you feel motion sickness.

A few years ago I didn't like Half-Life or CS, always got killed and didn't give a damn to those games. Till recently went back to FPS again but on console

1 month ago I felt dizzy when playing Killzone 2 demo
then regardless of dizziness or not I get the Killzone 2 retail disc and just hentam it, first 2 mission was a bit tough, then the motion sickness diminish bit by bit, and by the last mission, I am able to play it quite well, despite still noobish in aiming accurately,

but anyway I still don't like FPS, I prefer TPS like RE5. laugh.gif

Yep LCD sad.gif I think Far Cry 2 gave me the most severe headache out of all the latest FPS. I still can play Crysis/CoD4/CoD5 on my friend's PC but for around 20mins or so. FC2..sigh, walk in jungle like 2mins only felt like vomiting blood. Gave up on it completely sad.gif And if I'm not mistaken you will get blurry screen if you run too far isn't it? Lol with the nausea sh!ts I somehow could feel how the main char feel at that time

I dont like fps in general, so will get dizzy if watch it for too long! The only fps i've played is chasm(old game) and crysis. At first I'm not used to it as well but after some time of playing it I can slowly get used to it. The key here is to immerse yourself into the game instead of just 'looking' at the monitor. Try to feel like you're the person in the game and treat the enemy is alive instead of stupid ai. And dont keep turning and spinning around fast initially so u can slowly adopt to it!

By the way, turn off motion blur too if such option is available.

btw, what's the refresh rate for ur lcd monitor? and what's the frame rate setting did u use for the game?

lower number would certainly result in the motion sickness on the PC. If u can, try as possible to achieve the higher fps rate let say 60 frame per second and ur lcd monitor must also hv a high refresh rate to accompany that.

your problem is pretty common. motion sickness.
i've got some friends whom are fine with counter-strike fps but problems with RE5 tps.

probably the only way is to endure and after awhile it will be gone.

It's because your eyes tell you that you are moving, but your inner ear tells you you are not. the brain gets confused. It's the same reason some people get dizzy when reading in a moving car, except its the opposite where your inner ear signals to your brain that you are moving but your eyes make it appear you are still. That's why it's good to look out the window once in a while.

Yup good old game it is. Interesting enemy ai which different species fight among themselve if mistakenly attacked and have a pretty good graphic during its time.

On a side note, dizziness not only occur on fps platform. I remember after long time didnt game, when I first picked up sonic adventure(dreamcast) I get the dizziness too. It slowly went away after I endure and play it more.

me too. during my younger years, playing half-life half of my life in a day wouldn't be a problem. i even play CS 3 days without a break.

then i quit becos *ahem* wifey told me to.

there goes 3 years w/o any FPS

last year want to try install quake 4, play for 30 minutes then i puke like hell. (maybe a dose of buffett bukak puasa eat-like-no-tomorrow induce this lol) cant sleep the whole night. and have to put koyok everywhere rclxub.gif

i tot mb onli this game. so i look for quake3 arena + cscz + farcry to test.

all cannot tahan one. 10 minutes oso dizzy. sigh.

maybe 23 is the age limit for FPS? bye.gif

It's normal to feel nausea due to eye/brain confusion ... similar to car sick, sea sick, etc..

It all depends on the eyes (tired or fresh), distance, screen size, etc.

i dont know bout you. but i'm an fps fan both console and on the pc. i have never encountered any problems with fps's except for the first half life on the pc. everytime i tried playing it i felt like vomiting with some weird headache. no other pc game or even console game gives me that weird side effect. and cause of that i never had the chance to finish half life sad.gif jumped straight on to half life 2, hl2p1 and hl2p2 finished all 3 without having any side effects!!

really weird!!

But according to the definition of motion sickness, the cause should be because you thought urself were in the game whereby u play until u blend urself into the game. I have no prob wif FPS game but if i play more than 3 hours and alot of tense part, i still feel motion sickness. Maybe because myself blended into it

hmm... tbh it also happens to me....

When previously... few years ago when i was like taking foundation, i could play CS whole god damn day >.<, and when BF2142 launches, i can also just play all day without dizzy-ness, and it continues up to COD4 where.. that's my LAST dedicated FPS.. until i decided to follow up my studies...

Until few weeks ago.. i have heard COD MW2... where i was anticipatingly waiting (but also a little sad due to some.. activision doings) is coming out.. so i went back into COD4 to have some testings and learn back some basic FPS shooting... BUT.. guess what.. first 10 mins in Killhouse = feel like vommiting d.... i am VERY sure each and every settings of COD4 is NEVER changed before, including the resolution, quality, refresh rate.. and bla bla bla... Just like what it was almost up to 9 months + ago when i stopped...

tried again next day.. still feel like vommiting... +_+ Omg... does this tell me that i WILL never have a good day playing FPS anymore?

(btw L4D is ok for me, but Just... extensive fast paced games like COD4 is having problems... Same goes to the Both Online FPS game, sudden attack and blackshot.. i can't Seem to get used to it ANYMORE! sad.gif )

maybe i need to think.. with the few more days before MW2 official launches tongue.gif of the reason why.. it's totally unplay-able.. Anymore sad.gif

My friend watch me play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and they say they feel not well when watching me playing because I am an aggressive player that rushing all time with MP5 in some maps.

Maybe, you should put your mind inside the game, so you will feel better and perform better. Maybe your mind is not in the game.

maybe too much fps.. frames per second, imagine your brain captured images 200fps in hl2 compared to 40-60fps in crysis.. or the screen is too big, try playing in windows mode

btw... try changing your mouse.. i felt dizzy too playing borderlands(pc) using mouse/keyboard, now playing it using gamepad (ps3 controller)

Yes, i got the same thing too. one suggestion. try moving your head as well instead of just the eye. It is not a complete cure in my part but at least it helps me last longer. Previously I only need to play like 10 mins and I was so nauseated and feel like vomit like crazy. Sitting upright would help too. At least don't let your body be in super relax mood. Squeeze an hour or so is better than nothing.

Bro, I have the same condition. I think it's due to PC screens getting bigger. Go with a smaller screen and see if it helps. Also try sitting further away from the monitor.

heii.. i got this problem too when i play mw2. i felt a real sharp headache right between my eyes after a couple of hrs playing. so everytime i play mw2 i never played more than 2 hrs.

im not much of an fps player. i have only played bioshock (1), farcry 2 & mw2 on ps3 so far. then last week i started to play killzone 2. guess what? i can play for 4 hrs straight. man.. killzone 2 online is very addictive. my sharp headache is nothing. idk why is it when i play killzone 2 im not experiencing fps sickness at all as i am when playing mw2? maybe i should try playing mw2 again n see what happens but lol.. im busy hunting killzone 2 online weekly trophy.. no time to play mw2.

heii.. try not to play fps when ur tired or with empty stomach. but do play after u had enough rest. i mean.. play with a fresh mind n body..lol

FPS weakling here! All my life can never play an FPS game in peace. CS, COD, Serious Sam, etc etc.

I remember i wanted to play KZ2 soooo badly but within 20 mins feel like vomiting already. But surprisingly when play multiplayer the effects are abated. Perhaps graphics too nice liao in Single Player. HAHA

Yes motion sickness does affect some people. I heard even Hideo Kojima (Creator of Metal Gear Solid) does have motion sickness playing FPS. That's why MGS is a third person shooter. I feel that games from Japan are more motion sickness friendly than games from US & Europe. I myself am having trouble playing HL2 (but no problem with Bioshock, COD MW & Halo3). I found a lot of people do share the same problem. If u feel uncomfortable, just switch to other games. There are always great games that u will enjoy. Why torture yourself?

Train with Mirror's Edge. See what you feel when you do a roll.
