OEM supposed to be licensed together with the purchase of a laptops or manufacturer built desktops

Retail is for users that assemble their own desktop PCs.

You can go for OEM, but it is rather.... erm... unethical I would say.

that's true, but not really correct. the more important thingy is:

retail-transferable.
can reinstall at other pc, as long 1 machine at time.(jumping from 1 computer to another). limited support from microsoft.

OEM-non transferable. once installed, it registered on specific computer, forever. can reformat, of course, but on same computer.
microsoft record your hardware. changing/upgrading mobo cause oem to void since changing mobo considered changing pc.
he who install the os is responsiblle for support and services.microsoft will not responsible in support.
