You guys might want to call them up for confirmation, and do update me on that too. haha. if i've got anything wrong.

Well, anyway, both upgrade options above are only available for upgrade from Vista Home Premium.

Better pay the extra and get the cool Retail box , plus you have the advantage of transferring license from old pc to a new one (i.e if you change motherboard)

Hey just notice that some of the shop in Lowyat sells Windows 7 Home Premium retail in 32 bit only. I thought retail got both the 32 bits and 64 bits?

The retail pack should come in two dvds. Sounds suspicious to me that they are selling x86 dvd only... maybe they are selling the free upgrade dvd as the retail?

From what I know, the pricing of Windows 7 in Malaysia will reflect the prices of US, so you can actually base the price from what was released in US, do a conversion (3.4 conversion rate now), that way you can confirm the prices that was posted here.

it's an upgrade.

"Moving to Windows 7 Home Premium from Windows Vista Home Basic or Home Premium qualifies as an upgrade. All other paths, including a move from a 64-bit edition of Windows Vista to a 32-bit edition of Windows 7, require a more detailed re-installation process. "

thing is, TS posted that the family pack can only upgrade from Vista Home Premium while on microsoft site it states that Home Basic is also eligable. So which is correct? I have 2 comps with Premium and 1 with Basic, i wanna be sure i can upgrade all all them to Windows 7 if i get the family pack.

1) are these retail or oem licenses?

2) how does this work? do we download from an authorised microsoft server? i am quite wary of just buying a license key from unknown source.

thanks.

OK so far since im also in the cautios mode on this window 7, few email regarding this issue with my distro said its totally legal and actually its a retail key and downloaded from microsoft server itself..

and from my understanding they get their window 7 from third tier country which having lower price on the software itself and the key is taken from the retail box itself..

i am still waiting for their proof at least some screenshot of the retail box itself, and for the game that i sell i may say yes..that one have been proof their method but on the win7 im still on cautious mode and all order are still pending as i want to clarify that this is not from their msdnaa account or sumtin..

on the home premium they give me 2 diferent price im not sure why but i guess this is being the digital download itself so must be seperate diferent price..

anyhow let me check with JOS also as i had quite few friend working there if there is any offer available..

OEM supposed to be licensed together with the purchase of a laptops or manufacturer built desktops

Retail is for users that assemble their own desktop PCs.

You can go for OEM, but it is rather.... erm... unethical I would say.

that's true, but not really correct. the more important thingy is:

retail-transferable.
can reinstall at other pc, as long 1 machine at time.(jumping from 1 computer to another). limited support from microsoft.

OEM-non transferable. once installed, it registered on specific computer, forever. can reformat, of course, but on same computer.
microsoft record your hardware. changing/upgrading mobo cause oem to void since changing mobo considered changing pc.
he who install the os is responsiblle for support and services.microsoft will not responsible in support.

Microsoft allow shop owners to sell OEM version to be sold with purchases of new custom, non-branded computer that usually doesn't come with Windows preloaded/preinstalled. So it is unethical for the shop owners to sell OEM versions on its own.

When you buy Win7, no matter OEM or retail, you'll be prompted to either do a clean install or upgrade. Upgrade only works when you are currently running on Win Vista. Win7 RC users have to do a clean install.

Anyone can confirm where can buy Windows 7 Professional Upgrade in KL / PJ? How much?

OEM for new PC and either 32 bit or 64 bit.

Upgrade got both 32 & 64 bit so upgrade should be value buy right?

But you need to have an existing OS in your hdd to use the upgrade disk. I don't think it works in a new hdd, the clean install option need an activated windows to be present. Therefore, if already have a working windows, upgrade is the value buy; if building new rig, upgrade can't be used unless you own another older windows.

1. Worth or not you really have to judge by yourself, but I'd say Home Premium is good enough for most people.

2. Of course. Buying OEM without it pre-installed onto a computer is only an ethical issue sweat.gif

1) Well, in terms of the program itself, it's worth it. At least, I'm more willing to spend RM400-RM500 for this OS compared to spending that amount of money on XP or Vista during their lunch date. But, if you don't really need/crave the new OS, then RM400 is worth saving for a new computer/laptop.

2) You can get, it's not really legal, but it's not really illegal for you either. OEM is supposed to come with a new PC only. Not upgrade an old PC. But if you buy and install it, it's still a legal copy. Only the distribution method is illegal.

biggrin.gif

Summary:
1) Yes, worth it if you really need, want it.
2) Yes, you can. If kena tankap also not your fault.

please also take in consideration as if you use "legal" windows XP "32bit" and upgrade. your upgrade will need to be a "legal" windows 7 upgrade pack "32bit" as well. you cant upgrade it to "legal" windows 7 upgrade pack "64bit"

That is odd. If its retail Home Premium, it should come with both 32 & 64 bit. I have asked the same question at the Cycom thread and getting no reply yet.

If they give only 32 bit disc and claim its the retail Home Premium, then I think its unethical. I suspect they are selling 64 bit separately. Anyone can confirm?

For the retail one, how many time I can re-install to a new machine?

I know that OEM that once you register for one set of computer and that's it.

Given that at some point in 2010 I might upgrade my rig (mobo, CPU, HDD), so OEM for sure won't work with the new set of computer.

I guess OEM only come with one cd only, either 32 bit or 64 bit. OEM is form new PC.

Retail is trasferable to up to 3 PCs. normally when you chance PC, you upgrade to a better PC and might need to chance from 32 bit to 64 bit.

That is why the retail pack are more expensive.

That is why I'm considering getting upgrade since I've a vista licence. I buy upgrade cheaper then retail & get both 32 bit & 64 bit CDs.

Why would they sell you OEM when they can earn more from Retail?

I can confirm that the Retail Home Premium comes with 2 dics. There is no way Cycom can take out the 64 bit and sell separately as the CD key is only one.

I got my from Singapore direct when I asked them whether they could change my Vista Home Premium and they agreed and I only paid for the courier.

Talk about efficient I got my FEDEX to me by the 23rd October. Microsoft rocks in the sense that they changed my Vista with no questions asked, no hassle and very prompt delivery.

Not to say they sell separately, I say they MIGHT sell the 64 bits at a higher price than the 32 bits. So if let's say you want 64 bits, they take the retail Win 7 and said since it's 64 bits, it will be a bit tad expensive. You buy the 64 bits DVD and they throw away the 32 bits. Anyway, just a thought, since I can't find any reason for them to state 32 bits in their pricelist anyway unless it's an error on their side.

You'd better be damn sure it ain't an illegal version before making the purchase. RM180 sounds extremely suspicious.

*
This is what happened exactly during Vista time. Some shop will even say 64bit cost double because it's 32bit x2, WTF shocking.gif

upgrade version windows 7 come with 2 bootable disc (32bits and 64bits)

fresh install into SSD.

OK

tried @ 22 oct

rclxms.gif Then what make this different from retail version? hmm.gif Now I really confused.

Edit: Just check online and it's confirmed that upgrade version will just work, whether you are upgrading from previous Windows (XP or Vista) or clean install on a formatted hdd. It's bootable with both x86 and x64 DVDs.
It makes absolutely no reason to buy OEM and Full Retail pack.

Well after reading the article, it seems that the upgrade kit is a viable option provided that you have a legitimate copy of the earlier version of Windows. Never got the chance to try it yet. Plan to get a copy of Windows 7 retail anyway.

Awesome news! icon_rolleyes.gif

So basically I can opt for this method since I'm an ori XP user? When will this option actually be available in Malaysia? Where can I get it?

One more thing, what's the difference between a Starter, Basic and Premium?

Thx!

Please make sure, coz retail Win 7 Professional Package only cost Rm550 (*SRP).

btw, today saw Dell Mini 1011 with Win 7 starter, hmm... cant change the wallpaper.

Also, all new acer and dell that came today also preloaded with Win 7 Home Premium 64bit, yep, 64bit! biggrin.gif

Also tested Windows 7 Ultimate on Acer 1410 11.6" netbook running on Celeron, didn't break a neck, no lags, but wireless driver still missing. Looks like need some updates.

Just go to the shop selling Windows 7 and ask for Upgrade version smile.gif It's currently onthe shelf along with OEM version.

For the comparison between Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium, you can easily get them from the big Mr. Google.

sweat.gif That's not ehtical issue but legal issue liao.
I'm not suggesting people to use illegal Windows but I don't think it's illegal to use a upgrade disk on a new hdd i.e. there wasn't any OS installed previously. People buy genuine Windows, use a genuine product key to activate, no hacking/modification, and they are upgrading from NO WINDOWS (still consider as an upgrade to me), so I believe it's perfectly legal but not ethical enough unless the requirement of a previous legal Windows is stated in the EULA. (If anyone ever read the EULA)
Even if one is upgrading frm an illegal Windows, the law he breaks is actually owning a pirated software but the upgrade itself is still legal. and I think Microsoft is actually encourage people to transform their pirated copy into genuine one by selling genuine producy key to them, so I don't think upgrading from a pirated windows into a genuine windows is offensive.
Can anyone enlight me on this? hmm.gif

Converting from pirated copy to genuine copy of Windows isn't the same as using the upgrade kit to upgrade your pirated OS. Plus, the Get Genuine kit cost almost as full product.

Yeah, I second that. I did mention that when upgrading from a pirated Windows to genuine Windows, the law one breaks is using pirated software, but the upgrade itself is not illegal but unethical. And in fact if one is using pirated windows and realise that what he did is wrong therefore he goes to buy a genuine windows (upgrade version in this case), it is a good thing isn't it?

I do agree that it's not illegal to perform a clean install on a new hard disk. And yes, I also agree the upgrade procedure itself is legal even you're doing it on a pirated software. i didn't read the EULA but I do think you need to own a legitimate copy of previous Windows to legally use the upgrade pack. If you did not own any previous, you should obtain the OEM or retail, instead of the upgrade. That's my 2 cents tongue.gif

Good thing indeed, but it's not good, at least not in the procedure. The proper way to convert from pirated OS to genuine is to buy a genuine kit, not using an upgrade media.

Why not? As long as you pay for it. Better get in Malaysia because if you buy in Aussie Dollar you'll spend more due to weak ringgit after exchange.

actually you have to be careful about this, cause Vista has Malaysian edition which is what is mostly sold in Lowyat. that windows can only be activated using Malaysian IP. not sure about Win7 cause the price is almost similar with the US where as Vista was alot cheaper in Malaysia.

what have to becareful? even they need to register using Malaysia IP. it's still legal to use at other country. dont tell me i cant bring my laptop together to other country because it's a "Malaysia version of Windows Vista" where it's illegal to use at other country.

you can always sms back to malaysia and ask friends or relative to help you get the phone activation back from malaysia.

Those Malaysian special priced Windows Vista (or Windows 7 if it's available) need to be activated in Malaysia, then you can use it where ever you go, even on the North or South Pole.

Well that shouldn't be a problem as long you registered & activated legitimately in Malaysia. Heck, like fulat said, you can ask someone back home for phone activation. It's nothing like Regional DVD Movies.

Probably to run a home server? hmm.gif

Cynicism aside, Home Premium, as its name suggest should suffice for the average consumer.

Corporate users have their own, Windows 7 Enterprise. Windows 7 Ultimate, as Microsoft announced before, will be sold, but a limited units since Windows Vista Ultimate already failed with the Ultimate Extras.

Hey guys just wondering for full retail window 7 Home Premium(not upgrade from Vista), is it ONLY for Malaysia market in a sense that you must physically activate it in Malaysia or is it ok if i activate/reinstall in Australia ?
For full retail is there a limit on how many times you can transfer the license? Is there a distinction between a desktop and laptop for this e.g 1st time license used for laptop then CAN only transfer to laptop and not desktop?
Thanks for the help.

Malaysia windows 7 home premium full retail is stated only apple to activate in South East Asia(SEA) region only.
there is no limit on how many times u can transfer. as long as only 1 key respond to 1 motherboard no matter its a desktop or laptop.

I thought Home Basic wasn't supposed to be sold to the public in Malaysia? Only manufactured netbooks and the like should come with OEM copies of Home Basic.

u can do anything in Malaysia as long as u have the cash. all OEM are suspose not to sell to anyone without a new desktop/laptop. but try look at LYN and Lelong. full of ppl selling it.

Bummer, An Aussie retail license for W7 HP cost around $AUD270 approximately RM810. Btw any ideas if they sell legal "international license" meaning you can used it worldwide also?
Ok i know you can activated via online or phone right? If i activate it online used malaysian IP proxy but i'm located in Australia will it still worked?
It's only activation phase that is location sensitive right? After activation then no problemo with security updates and etc?
Thanks fulat for the help, i appreciate it.

thats a good question. i have no info on hows the patches update will verify your location with the license or not. but again, there's case on different region dvd not working with some dvd player. it might be able to update or it might not. so to bbe safe. an international version will have better advantage.

Easy, if there are two DVDs (x86 and x64) it's full retail, OEM only comes with either the x86 or x64 DVD. Upgrade kit comes with two DVDs too, by the way.

Depends on where you buy. Generally buying student edition is cheap but you have to be the student in that country.

If you also receive your paycheck oversea, yes. If you are paying by converting ringgit, most probably no.

Its cheaper depending on where you are. So far, US, UK have these kind of super deals regardless of what nationality you have. Even if you convert into RM still cheaper.

Student pricing available after sofware is on shelves. I bought pre-ordered so price cheaper than retail. But limited amount. Seems like M$ want to test market got value or not to sell this software.

That's pretty cheap for an Ultimate upgrade but does it require Windows Vista Ultimate to qualified or is it like the Upgrade Anytime? Students nowadays are so fortunate. During my times there were never such an offer...
