my mbp was stolen at 16/10/09.. i've make a police report and etc. but it seems that there's no result. and i wonder if there's a way to report this case to all apple stores? is there any way to format my stolen mbp? because i didn't put log-in password. but how will the buyer/user will be able to use my mbp? because if we need password to do updates,etc.. please. it's my only entertainment as a college student. and all my assignments are all there. and final exam is coming soon. very soon. any way to trace the mbp? and anybody knows and wiling to help me? at least let the entire apple store know. and is there any other way that a apple product doesn't need to go to apple store to repair or anything else? thanks..

I am really sorry for your loss mate. I am a college student myself, and i certainly know how you must feel. I lost my iPhone myself, and was quite depressed, but life goes on.

The only you could do after much trials, is to pray to God, and hopefully you could see a halo of light at the end of the tunnel.

Looks like Apple needs to do something like anti thief protection where it can tracks where the MB goes.

A thief can cut off the lock easily man. for me, where ever i go, my mbp is with me all the time. even i go to class, my mbp is still with me. Maybe next time you should bring your macbook with you all the time and when u sleeping, better hide your macbook at somewhere else. maybe your laptop beg? or under the bed.

If you're looking for some sort of tracking...
the answer is Orbicule's Undercover.
Their website explains everything: http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/
give it a read.

I got this for my 13" MBP the moment i got it.
But for maximum protection, it doesn't stop there.
I enabled the firmware protection, which requires a password to enter the boot menu so you can't reformat or even boot from a different partition. I don't know what happens if you change the hard disk though but I think it won't even allow the new hard disk to be used?
I enabled the option in the security preference pane to "request password 5 mins after sleep or screen saver begins". Of course that means u should have a login password.
Since the Undercover software works by tracking the user while online, I need to enable the thief to be able to use my mac. So I enable fast user switching and created another Standard Account (NOT admin) for the thief to use which doesn't have a login password. I also locked down my personal folders/home folder and can only be accessed by me. So in the event my mac gets stolen, the thief has no choice but to use the Standard Account I created and can do pretty much any basic thing except anything that requires admin access. He can't access my folders but he can use every bit of the remaining available space for his own use.
Then hopefully, in due time, I will be able to track that bugger down. And hopefully he/she ain't a tech geek.

blah blah blah blah blame Apple for user's stupidity? Apple already allocated the slot for you to plug in your notebook lock. it is the user's fault for not locking the notebook, not Apple's.

you stab yourself with a knife you going to say its the knife manufacturer's fault for not incorporating anti-stupid?

it's not he's blaming apple.. i think it is just better and more exclusive if apple come out with that feature.. and yeah.. lock is not 100% guarantee for your laptop not to get stolen..

nowadays macbook theft are getting more rampant. Sadly there's not immobilizer for macbook. Nothing much one can do. sigh..... Just be more careful next time. Even in Starbucks, those thieves will be there. Waiting for you to get out from your seat and they'll snatch. I noticed there's a lot of ppl who goes online in coffee places tends to ask the baristas to watch out for their machines when they need to go to toilet or for a breather. But seriously, I don't think the baristas got the time to watch over your machines when you are away... and plus, they won't wanna be hold liable if anything were to happen. So...ya... take good care of your belongings.

Judging from the comments, I wonder if anyone read my post above about a software called Undercover.
That's the least you could do to protect your mac. It's cheap enough that it's not even worth skimping on. If someone really wants to steal ur mac, a kensington lock becomes useless. I've yet to see this program work in Malaysia but it'll be really interesting. Having it on ur mac at least gives it some hope of being recovered as opposed to having no hope at all.

oh. i typically unplug my laptop out of the wall socket and personally hand it over to the barista for custody.

however, i'm of course, amazed by the number of times, the peeps over at starbucks, asking me to keep an eye on their belongings whilst they hop out for a toilet or cigarette break.

do i simply have a trustworthy persona?

If you can give a very good reward then maybe alot ppl will help you or else whoever stolen see this thread also will sell then give u because maybe No money or maybe 30% of full amount. If they sell they get 90% at least.

Precisely what I have done. I think Undercover is a good investment, although there is no guarantee of finding your machine if it gets lost, but hey its better than nothing. Another alternative you could think of is to insure your laptop. But here in Australia if you live in a dorm, you cant get insurance. So my next best option was Undercover. Although its extra expenditure, but if you plan to keep your laptop for 3-4 years, its a good investment. I learnt it the hard way when my old PowerBook G4 was stolen in a golf course when I was in Penang.

BTW, robin92, whats your next course of action now that you have traced your laptop?
Buying it back for RM2K is better than buying a new one.

I have a friend so paranoid that she bring her notebook everywhere she goes and I am not joking here, she wrapped her notebook in water proof plastic when she goes to bath (yes she brings her stuff even into bathroom).

She lost her laptop and she got bad trauma.
