htc magic is a OHD type. no Google Mobile System (Gmail, Maps, Market). In order to install market , download SlideMe Market (http://slideme.org) , not all apps in Android Market in there but it a start

i think celcom's magic is a PVT A type board, which now is consider hackable. go here -> http://zenthought.org/content/project/flashrec

download from your phone, make sure go to Settings-> Application -> click Unknown sources.

Install it, and

1. it will check your board if ok
2. it will download cm-recovery
3. then backup your img first
4. flash the flashrec
5. if all went ok, it will ask you to reboot to recovey.
6. then it will show recovery screen
7. you now have root + can add custom rom in it.

It will be good if anyone with a Magic either PVT A or PVT B or both put up a rooting guide upfront.

I have flash phones from HTC, Nokias, Sony Erricsons for more than 100 times and none have failed yet.
There is a second layer of defense that is always there that will bring your phone back to life. So it is not dangerous at all. If you done it wrong the worst is to redo everything again(sometimes the method is quite long and it gets frustrating.).

Btw I flashed my hero on the 2nd day i bought it,(1st day was to download everything that is needed)

hmm..so what's your review of the hero?

i played magic around and looked at lots of youtubes...seems like the interface isn't as fast as iphone 3gs. Web browsing especially..i thought it would've been as fast as safari
but it kinda lags a little on the initial scrolls.

but yeah..i almost bought magic..kinda love how android is new..but only 3.2 megapixel..and no flash support for browser...and battery life isn't as good as normal symbian phones? not to mention no garmin!! eventually decided to wait for an e72...

But with motorola and sony ericsson and samsung jumping on board, might see better and better androids biggrin.gif

Quite nice actually, the price is slightly higher than expected but I say it is quite worth is. Lets do a comparison.
Assuming you jailbreak/root
My NO bias take on three phones (based on specs and experience)

Iphone 3Gs
Pros
-Updates that enhance the functionality of the phone, until the Apple doesn't wanna support it (~3 years)
-Great games (you will appreciate it, especially during outings)
-Healthy app store (Loaded with junk though)
-Simple interface (Some doesn't like it cuz everything have to go through apps like phone, calendar etc)
-Faster Processor/3D gfx (future proof)
-Excellent Multimedia capabilities, itunes integration (may include playing 720P)
-Remote Wipe(cost money(Mobile Me))
-Should over take Symbian as the most popular OS by year end
Cons
-No multitasking (great deal for me,means no MSN+Web browsing at the same time)
-Comparatively expensive
-Slightly slower with each update
-Most expensive out of the bunch
-No flash
-Very Bad software integration
-No Smart dail(BIG down for me)
-No Social Networking/Services integration(another big down)
-No freaking Pinyin input(correct me if i am wrong)

E72
Pros
-Light, great size and weight
-Ridiculous amounts of battery life
-Hardware keyboard (I used both hardware keyboards and software keyboards, for me, software keyboards with text prediction are the best)
-Should be extremely durable
-Matured OS
-Remote wipe(cost money(microsoft activesync))
-Relatively good camera
-GPS (ahem version)
-Led Flash
Cons
-1-2 Updates max over the lifespan (imagine the same exact phone for a long time)
-3 year old OS
-Small screen/No touch screen (screen not fit for GPS)
-No Smart dail(BIG down for me)
-No Social Networking/Services integration(another big down)
-No threaded messaging(by default)

Hero/Magic (the new magic(32B) just lacks in the camera and the teflon coating, other specs are the same)
-Updates by Google, the XDA/Modaco community and HTC (should last 4 years but more frequent than iphones - current rate around 1 update per month)(Big Up for me)
-Telfon coating(Hero only)
-Very nice/customizable home screen with lots of data in your face.
-With Google Sync, changing phones/No worries of data loss
-Remote wipe(3 solutions, all free)
-Half Open source, all those innovative stuff come from here (cutting edge)
-GPS (i got mine free with the purchase)
-Smart dial(See HTC videos on youtube)
-Social Networking
-High growth rate (only seconded to iphone)
Cons
-Outdated Hardware (still ok for android)
-Web browsing just slightly below iphone.
-Worst camera out of the bunch

Conclusion:
If you are kid who likes to play games, into music, simple interface, and got cash to burn - Go for iphone
If you are a loyal Nokia fan, guy who just want to make calls, sms and uses the phone for a very long period of time, go for E72.
If you are the cutting edge, tech savvy, social networks, uses google go for hero.

Very good comparison indeed.

I'm actually a convert from SE for 5 years (including the weird rocker style qwerty P1) to Nokia 5800 because at that time it was the cheapest, yet full touch screen.

I would think i'm in between business + tech geek. However, I think i might have prob with E72's screen size, outdated OS, and no touch capabilities. Yet it supposingly has good battery life, slim design, a web browser that handles flash (not on htc magic, but hero), bunch of keys so i wouldn't have 'no multitouch' problem, and better camera, and garmin (LOL..unless android starts having this or an equivalent solution I'll dive straight in).

I never wanted the iphone since it's more like a fashion toy, but android on the other hand, brings alot of possibilities, just that, I'm never sure if updates are coming in, maybe the donut, but what about ecliar. And just like that, 1 year plus, already from 528mhz to samsung sprint's 800mhz..and incoming Acer/ HTC snapdragon / Sony ericsson Xperia 3 all using 1GHZ already, I'm really not sure how much more android can support the previous models. It's moving too fast, it's like buying a computer already.

For now, i think android phones are experimental..although I'm already getting the feel starting this year end till next year, theres' gonna be boom of androids coming out. So theres' gonna be a whole lot of choices next year.
