Hrmm.. I'll relate my 'near-death' experience.
My set is a 80G SG model. Bought in Nov 07 if i'm not mistaken.

No problems whatsoever..until I d/l the U2 beta,
Could play 1 round of co-op, but then when I ventured on to a 2nd round...bam! PS3 shut down with the red blinking lights. Pretty terrified so i hard-offed the PS3 from the switch at the back. Switched back on and it was fine, tried to U2 again..same thing.

After that was kinda scared so deleted the demo and that's that.
Few weeks went by, got the game, played about 30 mins, and the same thing happened. On offed the ps3.. tried to play again and it shut down within 5 mins. Well after that yeah, haven't touched it since laugh.gif

Can play all other games fine. That day played PES for 4-5 hours straight.
The fan has been loud before, but it's never switched off.
Uncharted 2 is the only game that does this sad.gif

No YLOD yet after 2 years but I only play Street Fighter IV on my PS3 40GB(upgraded to 160GB). I convert my DVD movies to video file then copy to hard disk before I watch it. I know the lens will not last long if it is heavily used.

I also downloaded U2 demo but play 3 times only coz I suck when playing TPS game. My PS3 never hang n my fan never run in full speed.
However I noticed now my PS3 fan will run on turbo mode if my room quite hot, especially in the
afternoon. So I put cooling fan (industrial grade) n no more turbo mode if I play PS3 with the cooling fan on.

Maybe you guys can try this nod.gif. Mine is 40GB SG set icon_rolleyes.gif

remember the time when MGS4 release? there are several 60GB owner suffer lens problem. MGS4 is the 1st game utilise native 1080p. Now when U2 came out; the 1st game which utilise 100% Cell Processing power, the older batch SKUs facing ylod. So in conclusion, whenever new game with 'improvement' comes out we (ps3 owner) should worry. Dunno what will happen when FFXIII comes out, early batch of slim & older SKUs owner pls beware.

Just my 2 cents.

Yours make me damn scared....

nothing to be scared bro..if the time comes, you have to accept it.. sweat.gif

Mine one is died without any symptom at all...

My experience is like these...

1st YLOD - it happens exactly 1 week after i update fw 3.01, and i download the Star War demo from US PSN and when play it, it just auto shut down. At first feel strange coz from day one until now i never experience any auto shut down issue from my console. Ok then try to on again, nothing unusual when i stay at XMB screen there. after few mins try again the demo. When just go inside the demo, it auto shut down again. Feel ??? again. Nvm just dont play the demo, maybe the demo got some problem i think. Then i just hanging around at XMB screen there checking some mail. Here comes suddenly it auto shut down the 3rd time...i was like WTF happening? Again try to turn on the console, it turn green light, just about 2 secs, i see the yellow light blinking there, then immediately it turn to red light blinking.. cry.gif The fear starting to arise from my bottom heart..i keep asking myself "Am i the unlucky one to be hit with the legendary YLOD?", "It's impossible, i'm just playing it once a week, it couldn't be? How could it be???"

But still after few try, i have to accept the fact.. sad.gif

2nd YLOD - happen after my console has been revived 10 days..this 10 days i was so damn happy to download U2 demo, LP2 demo, WE2010 demo, and really have a fun playing with friends and Lyn buddies online. It seems like nothing has been happen before on my console, it just runs fine, no loud fan kicking, no auto shut down, no hanging on any game i played, the console also not feel any hot plate at all (coz my room equip with air-cond)...it just like the day 1 purchase. Then here comes another tragedy...one day morning while i'm stay at XMB screen checking something, it auto shut down again...because of previous experience, thinking that might be overheating, just quickly switch off the back power button and hope it can be cool down. So leave it there inside the room with air-cond on for 2 hours. I keep praying it may help to reduce the risk of being hit YLOD again...At the end, you know the answer sad.gif

Take note that both of the incident are happen not even i'm playing any disc games that cause my console fed up. It just happen without any symptom at all..

So what i can advise is..enjoy the game you like as longer as possible and dont worry too much, as you can't prevent anything happen on your console.

My sincere blessing that all your guys console can last as long as possible, and dont be panic or whatsoever, coz you wont be so unlucky like us. Just always have a positive mind and dont think too much. Just enjoy your gaming experience as usual thumbup.gif

Mine is 40GB SG set  icon_rolleyes.gif

i just got my slim version ..

tried u2 last night..and suprisingly its very quiet system,

compare to my old fat version, it sounds live vaccum cleaner

already send the old Ps3 it for repair.. hope can revive back and sell it quickly to compensate my expenses from slim

malaysia will never launch any limited edition ps3 sales here
either u have to pay double the price to get parallel import, just like other limited editions as RE5, MGS4 edition

Sorry m8, but i'm calling BS on that.

We get marked up prices, but our prices for LE consoles aren't anyway near double.

Ask those people who bought the Hagane MGS4 40GB and the Cloud Black 160GB. Both went for around RM1.8k, which was pretty much the SRP rolleyes.gif

Hmmm wonder if there's any point sending my PS3 in to 'check'. But since only Uncharted 2 causes the shutdown... i'd be afraid though to 'demonstrate' the shutdown, since it may lead straight into the YLOD doh.gif:
Or i'll just get a Slim just for U2 sleep.gif

*
Not only uc2, i found that Gt5p and nba 2k9 also have this auto shutdown isue. Because there are high speed reading type game can make cpu and gpu get hot so quick.

I'd like to if anyone has experienced this:

I was playing Gta4, when I heard a 'pop'. I was immediately disconnected from PSN. I used a wired connection and the ethernet port on the back of PS3 no longer lights up (green light).

I switch to wireless and the wireless LED in front does not light up either. I restart PS3 and it takes 4-5 mins to load up XMB menu and then my controllers no longer sync with my console or only syncs until next restart.

yeah ur bga CELl or the RSX balls must have disconnected from the board when is on due to metal expand from the heat, but then soon after the system shuts down, the metal inside get contracts and the balls of solder get contact to the boards n thus ur ps can still turn on, but not to joy bcuz the connection of ur solder balls between ur bga and ur boards have been deteriorate and worst come to worst ur ps will not be able switch on permanently, have to reflow it or reballs it, the reballs is by far the permanent solution cuz from my experience of just reflowing it, the problem would come back, it can last for long time if ur lucky or can come shortly just after a few days. sweat.gif

If your thermal paste cost you less than RM100 on its own, I'm assuming it isn't very high quality? unsure.gif

You do have to change the thermal paste every once in a while though. The PS3 itself uses very good thermal paste, but it is best to change it every year or so (or half a year, if you're scared)

guys, my ps3 makes damn alot of noise after i've played for maybe an hour to two hours. its the fan making noise. but does that have anything leading to YLOD. cause i've only gotten the fan noise when i started playing intense games with alot of htings going on such as inFamous and MW2

and mine is a 40g Singapore set. bought around September 2008. so am now damn scared and must take precautions to safe guard my baby. my stupid xbox got 3rod fixed then now got lense problem when reading Jack sparrow game. sad.gif

cant afford to loose the ps3 especially after ive gotten MW2!!!

mine is a CECHE06|singapore 80GB unit, bought around August 2007. PS3 goes auto-shutdown (blinking red light) when playing; Dragon Age, Guitar Hero World Tour.. sad.gif just got my Dragon Age yesterday.. problem happens during a coversation part somewhere in the castle.. GHWT.. when ever i press start to play a song.. this is really frustrating.. anyways, a simple touch on the start sensor revived the ps3..

That is the sign that YLOD is coming because ur ps3 is overheating already. My ps3 just YLOD yesterday night because I bought Uncharted 2 lately and only when i play Uncharted 2 it turns off and blink red lights, other games no problem, after a few times, boom, YLOD yesterday after it auto-turns off.

Hey guys im currently using KR 160gb set, when i play AC, the game would just hang and i need to shutdown the set. When i turn it back on it beep a couple of time instead of the usual single beep. Is this the symptom or YLOD or just normal crashes as i googled up Assassin Creed and it seems the game have some bug.

Btw it nvr happen for other games just Assassin Creed.

ya could be overheating but it doesn't happen to the other games im playing.. the most is on GHWT.. now im continuing my dragon age after i skip some of the in-game movie.. i read somewhere it could be caused by the FW we're on now that had effect on the ps3 BR-D reader.. hmm.gif so i won't fret. still waiting for the new FW updates and hopefully all of this would go away.. rolleyes.gif

I am wondering wether i should service it now b changing the thermal paste. I cant afford to lose my ps3 because i have tons of photos, Songs and movies in it. Also i have spend a few hundred dollars on DLC. Singstar, rockband and many many games. Say if it does goes kaboomm... will i be able to transfer all my DLC to the new ps3?

I recommend you all put a table fan on the right hand side of the PS3 .The air from the fan can blow directly to the hole that located on the right hand side of the PS3.Like mine, after I put a table fan there ,my PS3 seems runs quite cool.
I not sure this is the best and cheapest way or not,but I hope it can really cool-off your PS3.

By the way,MY ps3 is CECHH06 Model(the red box packing one).It is a last batch 40 GB model.I think this model is better than previous CECHG 06 40GB PS3.

Wah!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif 3 table fans, haha, that is too much la.Only one table fans will work .What PS3 need is a very well open space,so the air can come in and out smoothly.

Then,I think the PS3 should be ok already,no need worry. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Dont worry, when you dint play just put a towel or kain to cover your PS3 ,so the dust wont stick on it,of course not ask straight away immediately put the towel after playing, because it is still hot.
I always did like that because most of the time my PS3 is in my penang house, while me still in UPM study.I always put a towel and hopefully the dust wont stick on it. smile.gif

Actually,in my opinion,no matter you all play how many hours,it doesnt matter at all,as long as the console located in a very open space and got cool and enough airflow around the console for cooling(for example putting table fan with air-cond).It should be fine and no problem.
Since Sony never officially state that cannot play more than how many hours or whatever. But they strongly ask the user to located the console at well airflow and well venlitated space

To sum up,ylod can be prevented if you take all this pre-caution.

I hope that I am not the ylod victim sad.gif

Those victims who got ylod is probably their PS3 is located at the place not the surrounding temperature is quite high or maybe not enough airflow.
Please correct me if I got any wrong statement
The most dangereous issue is lens dead problem, since it cannot be prevented and when it comes it will comes,if you are really unlucky enough cry.gif

Ya,I strongly agree with you, there is also a possibilty that manufacturing defect and design problem will caused the problem.Just like the early CECHG06 40GB model and CECHA 60GB model.

Just same like the pre-Jasper Xbox 360 Model also.

But if put in a venlitated space and taking pre-caution is definately better than dint do anything right? smile.gif smile.gif

agreed too.

Thats actually a very basic understanding on any electronic item, it needs room to breath. Try placing a barbecue grill in an airtight cabinet and see what happens..

My old unit did hit by YLOD, eventhough i placed it in a very open space, and from day 1 it already stayed in a air-conditioning room. Furthermore, i am not hardcore gamer that on my ps3 for 24/7, i only play it occasionally during weekend.

So,it is very headache sometimes if you are so unlucky if you buy defective batch product. It not only apply to electrotics product like PS3,but same as you buy the car also.

Like I said above

I think every PS3 owner are now playing in fear....fear that the YLOD might strike them.  Sad but true.
*
but the probability to hit YLOD is much more lower than XBox360's RROD.

So just enjoy your gaming life as much as you can, not to worry so much tbh icon_rolleyes.gif

40gb japanese set bought april '08.
Screw the ventilation / heating issues. Its just luck.

Keep your machine in an airconditioned, well-ventilated space, with a fan blowing directly to the side vent would only prolong the inevitable.

reflowing the machine is like patching up a tyre, it will come back. the only solution is to reball the thing. or a new one.

the one thing that srew all of us is the abusive on off cycle which is more abusive than let it stay on. expansion and contraction over many period of time weaken the metal structure hence our bga(cell or rsx) solder ball not making contact to the pcb(mobo) and this is why we get ylod error. its the very same problem with the xbox rrod error.

According to your statement, well it means that all Xbox 360 and PS3 will definately break down one day?
So,is it that we every one year have to buy and replace with a brand new console?Just like the gardenier bread, the supermarket have to throw away or send back and swap with a brand new roti?

If like that,I think gaming is the entertainment just for those billonairne .
Please correct me if I am wrong. smile.gif

emm not to say will definately bcuz others seem dont have dis problem, but the first model xbox literally all brokedown and i think sony improves their solder proses and thus not many got the problem, only happen to those who unlucky one, nevertheless is the same problem which is the solder ball not making contact anymore between the bga n the pcb

No problem. We need people like you to keep the market competitive. Those shop asking for RM300-RM400 for fixing YLOD is pure nonsense. No changing of parts yet the ridiculous price.

I think it happens more often to the early adopters of the ps3, since nowadays the games utilize more of the ps3, the earlier versions of the ps3 can only take that much. Therefore resulting in overheating and YLOD. The slim has just launched for a few months, who knows what problem will strike after they reach a few years old and more and more canggih games come out, hopefully there wont be any problems.

Point 1: It's placed on the desk. No confinements.
Point 2: Played BluRay disc every now and then. Literally lost count of it.
Point 3: I did update the system firmware via game disc and externally via USB before.
Point 4: Have yet to go online.
Point 5: Average gaming hour would be 5hrs. During weekends, it could be stretch to a solid 10hrs without switching off the console.

Miscellaneous point:

Misc 1: Mine is a 80GB. (the original version)
Misc 2: Been faithfully with me for a year.
Misc 3: My PS2 (the original version) has been with me almost 10 years and it has not broken down yet.

Regards, Joey

p.s: Maybe I'm lucky when it comes to purchasing electronics gadgets. Well....just want to share my piece of story. Cheerio.

I don't think any of these make any sense. biggrin.gif

There is a saying .... "Those afraid of dying never really lives".

For me, I just bought a usb fan that would aid to increase the air flow in the ps3. Hopefully that would reduce the temp in the PS3 by a few degree celcius which in the long run might help a little bit. I did notice the air blowing out from the back of the PS2 less hot after I install the fan.

Nope. I bought one which is actually for laptop, but without extending the four arms outward, it sits nicely on top of the PS3. I will post a picture later. The good thing is that I use the fan to suck out the hot air from the PS3 instead of blowing the air into it.

This is a picture of the fan....

still think there is nothing can prevent YLOD..some ppl play games/ blu ray movie like 24/7 also no problem until now, so how to explain that? Same goes to don't play online la, don't update fw la, for me that doesn't matter and doesn't mean YLOD won't happen at one day.

Still think YLOD is a general hardware failure which randomly hit any console..whatever pre-caution also nothing effect at all i think..

My old PS and PS2 still working flawlessly until now (how many years you count), no matter how many hours i played and fall down to floor...i think the old gadget are more reliable than present one.. sweat.gif

My old PS and PS2 still working flawlessly until now (how many years you count), no matter how many hours i played and fall down to floor...i think the old gadget are more reliable than present one.. sweat.gif

also got less "powaaaa" hehehe. its just a heat issue i think. if theres not enough ventilation. i think it only hits later on after dust build up in the machine.

No lah...the fan runs smoothly and very quiet.

Whether or not it will help prevent YLOD , i'm not sure. But I'm pretty sure it will keep my PS3 a few degree cooler.

My previous YLOD unit has been place into air-conditioning room and plenty of ample space for ventilation purpose since day 1, some more i only played it during weekend, and occasionally during weekdays. And my room always vacuum daily. Still it "infected" by YLOD sweat.gif

Yeah dust accumulated might cause the console overheat, but as for my case, tell me what has cause the YLOD?

Thus i still think it is a general hardware failure that you can't prevent at all. It merely depends on you are fortunate enough to be hit by YLOD or not.. doh.gif

U blow the air inward or sucks the air out?

However, the airflow of PS3 is just same like Xbox 360,the cool air came in from the right side (and front)and the hot air go out from the back,so if you suck the air out from the right side and it will just make the condition getting worst.
I try before sucking the hot air out from the right side, and the console getting even hotter and worst.

The right side is air flowing out. I can feel the warm air coming out from the right side. That is why i place the fan so that it suck the air out.

bro, mine is 40 GB model and same like you. hot air got out at the back so I put cooling fan (industrial grade) to suck the air out. my ps3 never run in hyperdrive mode if I turn on the cooling fan.

your method is wrong as the best way is to suck out the hot air so the temperature inside your ps3 won't rise up nod.gif . dun worry, this method is correct coz I'm a engineer myself and we cool laser tube using this method too icon_rolleyes.gif

I just checked my PS3 after hours playing MGS online.
I position the PS3 horizontally. I realized that, the bottom of the PS3 is hot. sweat.gif .
Quickly I put 2 blocks to lift the PS3.
This YLOD thingy scare me a lot.
Maybe I position it vertically, and see if it's better.

Last while playing Uncharted 2, my PS3's fan suddenly spin very fast and crash(power off and the red light blinking).

The YLOD strikes again? So I power down the PS3 and turn it back on immediately and to my surprise it turn on normally with a message that my PS3 is not turn off properly. I then remove the disc and play other HDD based game and so far no problem after that.

Did anyone experience this before? Is it just the game crash or its early sign of YLOD gonna happen again?

I think is Uncharted 2 causing ps3 to overheat again, if your PS3 is revived from YLOD I recommend not to play Uncharted 2 for more than 2 hours straight, 1-2 hours stop for 15-20 mins to rest. Few more times turn off and red light blinking might cause YLOD to strike again.

I was playing U2 again just now and it crashes the PS3 again. Just shut it off and red blinking light. I then restart the PS3 and it booted ok but then crash again less than a minute later. I then decide to remove the USB fan and restarted the PS3. Then I just use a normal big fan to blow to the front of the PS3 and play about an hour of Wipeout HD Fury and no problem. Then I put it uncharted 2 again and have play about 2 hrs now still no problem.

I think the USB fan is not working very well and causing the PS3 to crash. So I think its not advisable to turn the PS3 to a disco machine with the ble USB fan. tongue.gif

now i see your problem.. you've got two air outakes now.. where is the intake??? so in short. IMO la. you;'ve created a two hot air channel out of yr ps3. there should be cool air going in as well..the front has too small holes for enough cool air to get in. so the hot air cant decide where to go first. through the back.. or through the top.. So according to your statement,is it correct that i blow the cool air into the right side vent of 40GB PS3 with table fans ?

I set up this for quite long already and normally i will open air cond as well,i found that the console side vent is like ice cold and super cool. After 2 hours of gaming and I take my bluray out and the disc is no hot at all and just a little warm only.

But one things I worry,is this a good phenomena or not?Because many people says that the side vents is blowing air out but I reversely blow the cold air into it.I scared this will damage my PS3

Please help me sad.gif

IMO cool air has to go in one side and hot air another.. the ps3 has one hot air outake already.. its best to channel cool air into it too. if every side of it sucks air out? where does the cool air going to go in?

yr right side ?? neeed to show me ler. is yrs vertical horizontal? the hot air comes out behind the ps3 where the power socket usually is.. if u blow air in frm other sides its good. dont need to suck out anymore.. cause the fan inside the ps3 is doing jus tat for you.

and u'd come to know this tat all other holes other thn the back of the ps3 serves as air intakes.. if u open enuff ps3s u'd know where the dust collects.. and u;d know where the air is blowing IN from..

I don't think anyone on YouTube would teach you how to reball, seeing as most people there want cheap and easy fixes, which is definitely not something you could say about the reballing process.

Blowing inside the PS3 might be better than sucking out, since the air going in should (theoretically), cool down the components smile.gif

I think the YLOD is worst than the 3ROD.

My PS3 YLOD again.  It was ok last night.  However this morning when I turn it on, it just YLOD.

I think the YLOD is worst than the 3ROD.
*
Hmm 2nd time YLOD usually happens in a short duration as soon as you fixed it in the 1st time.Thats why I assume it may be or may be not worst than 3ROD.But like people said,it just about luck.

Problem with reballing (or any other YLOD fix) is that most people who can fix will charge quite a bit for it.

One guy, shahreza2000, has kena 2 ylod (2nd time not yet recover) and shelled out RM300-400 for each fix, amounting to RM600-800 in repairs alone, which is nearly the price of a brand new PS3 Slim (although you can't really blame him, as he needed to backup his HDD, not to mention how most people end up 'bonding' with their PS3s somewhere along the way)

oit... I've only shelled out one fix (mb screwed, got a new one)... my ps3 is under subject of testing (2nd or 3rd ylod)...let alone i can say RIP PS3... next year i will get new ps3 slim icon_rolleyes.gif

only solution at the moment i've seen mostly is reflowing... its only a temp solution...

i've yet to see reballing on ps3 GPU and Cell CPU... even tho we have local companies that provide reballing services at extraordinary cost sweat.gif

No problem mate. I will try to reflow it myself this time, but can only try when i got home from my offshore trip now.

Too bad we cannot use the old HDD on the a new PS3. Then no matter what I have to revive my PS3 just long enough to backup.
