Hi to Plasma TV sifu,

I bought a Samsung PS42C450 for my 1st Plasma experience and waiting for delivery.

Recently I read somewhere talk about break-in for new Plasma TV:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=583089

I'm not a LCD/Plasma expert but I'm really getting very confused and really need some expert advice / comment:

1. should I still do the break-in for new Plasma TV?
(note: some suggest no need some yes still need ....)

2. if yes still need to break-in, then:
- is it better to use the USB jpeg picture or DVD playback?
- set min or max contrast?
- should I run it continuously (non-stop) for 200~250 hours straight (9~10days)?
- if only accumulation, is it better not to watch anything until reach total break-in hours?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there, I would suggest lower the contrast ( you can google online for some run-in settings for your TV ) and avoid dynamic modes and just watch normal 4:3 content until after the 150hour mark. That's what I did with my TV. smile.gif I know its torture to not fully utilize your new TV's true potential but for me its worth it. Some people believe in running continuously, but i'm just afraid that for some reason, the device your are using for playback suddenly jams or stops and just displays a static image in the middle of the night at 4am and you only notice it in the morning at 8am wink.gif

Just got the TV, it seem like Sammy has lot's of setting (as least compare to my current Regza LCD) for this entry level Plasma, or may be all Plasma is like that need to do a lot of setting ?!

I download the DVD image from : http://www.eaprogramming.com/
then use Nero to burn into DVD and run it through DVD HDMI with the following setting:

Mode=Movie
Cell Light=8
Contrast=50
Brightness=10
Sharpness=0
Colour=25
Tint=G50/R50

Black Tone, Dynamic Contrast =Off
Gamma=0
RGB Only Mode=Off
Colour Space=Native
White Balance=20 for all (original was 25 for all)
Flesh Tone=0

Colour Tone=Warm2
Size=16:9
Digital & MPEG Noise Filter=Off
Screen Burn Protection=On (I didn't change anything here)
Honestly, I'm not sure whether the above setting is alright or not, really hope some sifu can comment/suggest further.
Hi Syrius,

Sorry, I don't quite understand what do you mean by "watch normal 4:3 content", you mean don't run it on 16:9 aspect ratio?
*
Hi klseet,

Sorry, posted wrongly wink.gif , what i meant is watch 1.85 : 1 content and avoid 2.35 : 1 content ( letterbox ). I also watched normal astro 4:3 content stretched to fill up the screen also. Try to avoid the black bars and watch full screen content for the first hundred hours or so.
Apologize for the confusion caused.

Anyone with similar TV like mine? Is it ok to use the above for break-in? Appreciate sifu out there to comment/advise further, thanks in advance!
Thanks for the clarification!
So you mean still ok to watch right away with low setting before completing the break-in process?
*
Yes, its ok to enjoy the TV right away with a slightly lower contrast. After roughly 150 hours, its considered broken-in / run in wink.gif
People usually run the break in using those DVDs 24/7 so they can work the phosphors equally to prep the TV for calibration.

OIC, so entry level like mine actually no need break-in blush.gif
Ok, will start watching right after my new B'yond arrive nod.gif

smile.gif The first 100-200 hours you are watching the TV is considered the 'break in' period. Remember to run at a lower contrast when watching your TV during first hundred hours or so as the TV is more susceptible to burn-in. Especially since you are watching Byond as Astro has a lot of bright logos.

this is true for my Samsung LCD monitor. capacitor dead after 3 years while other brands are still ok sweat.gif

My Samsung monitor is still ok after 2yrs....fingers crossed sweat.gif But I did hear from some electronic repairmen that Samsung TVs are unreliable, ie. they receive more Samsung TVs to be repaired than other brands. On the other hand, maybe its due to more people buying Samsung LCDs?
