some answers in ealier discussions in this thread and few other; also in 'garage sale' section. in summary, u can purchase non-cotractual unit from telco (1988 celcom, maxis 2099) or resellers (start price from 2k). check the garage sale for forum sellers. double check issues on warranty and PIN release (if from non official unit). pick a good center/seller as they'll make your life easier when problem arises. don't just look at the dollar tag.
